The title pretty much says it all I've never heard of the games or read the manga. The fact that it seems to be a sequel (judging by the 2) without a previous anime just leaves me a little curious.

Actually, yes you can. While Devil Survivor 2 does take place after the first game, the stories aren't really connected to each other. Hell, I think there was only one reference to the first game in Devil Survivor 2. (wasn't really a big plot reference so don't worry)

You can watch this series without worrying about anything like that. It's a stand alone series. So just sit down and enjoy the show.

tbh, I'm not even sure if it is considered as a reference or not, but near the beginning of the game Makoto mentioned that the old method of summoning was done by a homebrew program. (I'm assuming that she was talking about the program that Naoya wrote)

Just like the Persona 4 animation, you don't have to have played the games or have any knowledge of them. Though, if you enjoy the anime, I highly recommend these games. They are badass for sure!

Not necessarily. I guess that's something unique about the SMT universe. You don't need to know anything about whatever its medium is upon starting a series, Digital Devil Saga is an exception though.

Although the first and second games may as well be set in separate parallel universes with their vastly different stories with minor similarities; the Devil Survivor 2 game differs from the animation adaption of it because they change up a few things, like the order of which things happen, how they happen, and also cut out other things that may not be pertinent to the main story, but still interesting to know.

Thus, you'll enjoy DS2 the anime more if you play the game first, so you can play "spot the difference" and also mentally fill in the small gaps they cut out. That said, watching the anime adaption alone will be just as enjoyable if you read the manga (animation version, since there are two manga adaptions of the second game) because the anime and manga are virtually identical but told in different mediums.

You can watch the anime without having played the game but it's really retarded and a waste to do so. DeSu2 is more of a real MegaTen then Persona and therefore more based on your own decisions. Watching the anime would be like watching someone else play the game and show you the most boring parts and ending of it. It's impossible to adapt the game right for someone new to the story and even if you don't have the time to play the game you shouldn't waste 20 minutes every week watching the anime.

So you can, but don't.
