what was your first account online?

I think flash based sites have died out since ive gone on.

chatrooms seem kind of dead(still there though)

Im a "newer" internet user, and can say ive seen alot of dead online games that had servers dropped. And fax pranks are dead.

Memes have become mainstream.

Granted, they were already popular by the time I even knew what "4chan" was, but they weren't popular in the eyes of the general public.

Yes. Back then people were using Netscape Navigators hosting their Geocities sites and browsing with Alta Vista (whatever it's called) and Yahoo. When you wanted bootleg games you send $40 to some guy with a list and tell him what games you wanted, and he shipped you a CD.

That could either be good or bad.

What are up with the grandpa/grandma sounding poll options? "Yes I can barley use it anymore" What? Why isn't there simply a "Yes" option.

The internet hasn't changed much for me. I was going on forums when I first started and obviously I'm still on them now. I have grown out of virtual pet/virtual self sites though (habbo, millsberry, marapets, dress up sites, etc).

My first account online was on Barbie. My first forum account was on 4kids in '03.. particularly the witches' side of the winx club board but then later the general board. I was a member there for like 5 years until they revamped the site and then I quit it.

I used that for excuses back in middle school. Telling the teacher I can't call my mom because someone was on the internet.

I think it was with AOL online with dial up or whatever when I first used the internet. That was like in 96 or 7, but I don't remember what I did at all. I know it was around 2001 when I realized there was porn on the internet, we had Compuserve and there was a link to it on the homepage.

The internet has changed a lot. Earlier for me, internet was freewebs, geocities, and fan-sites. But now it's Facebook and Twitter. Now we update 'live' whereas earlier it was like, one update every week/month.

Yes, I can barely live here. Though I have some nice friends at Facebook and Twitter.

I can't really say if it's changed, i mean yeah, i've been using the internet since i was like 5 years old. however, at that time, all i did was was look up pictures to print off and colour. I was like 10 years old when i actually started doing "normal" things on internet (though, with the internet, what's considered normal lol. I'll consider normal using it to gain information). So the question becomes, in the past 7 or 8 years has it changed for me? nope, not really. I mean, sure streaming HD video is now common, and what not. but so much of it's the same, the annoying cats and a bunch of people who are just plain dumb running their mouths. overall, it hasn't changed much.

First thing I ever did online was beast the absolute shit out of the original Unreal Tournament online.

Used to destroy people with their cable and dsl connections on my little 56k. Those were good times!

Sitting with Fiber Optic broadband now so yeah 40MB > 56k so I guess the internet has changed alot for me since I started using it back in 98,99.

I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D with friends by dialing their modem directly. And I could only do it at night because it took up the only phone line in the house. God those days sucked.

In a practical sense, the internet has changed for me vastly, in that I can access it now any time, any place, faster than I could when it was restricted to my living room when nobody was on the phone, in the palm of my hand.

Hehe, I still play this game! Lots of people on, and much more fun than any modern shit.

As for the Internet, no, for me it hasn't really changed. I changed, for sure, but I only really started using it 6-7 years ago. My first account was probably Yahoo! Answers.

As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

Yes, Fred is no longer the top subscribed person on YouTube. Thank goodness.

Also, flash games I'd enjoy as a kid seem to have lost their magic since Free to Play games are more frequent. Loved Kongregate.

As far as dial up goes, I do remember my parents dealing with it, but since I was quite young, I never really messed with it. But do recall the epically slow loading times for a single web page.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

First time I got online was when I was an 8 year old, innocent boy who only cared about gaming and sports and stuff (a.k.a. studying). Fast forward to 12 years later, I'm now a maniac with weird fetishes. You decide whether I've changed or not.

As for my first online account, it was a hotmail account I created with the help of my uncles and cousins, little after my first usage of internet. My first internet activity was probably something along the lines of GTA : Vice City.

cripes none of those apply. i was mature enough to witness the real start of internet usage (not saying i'm special, just older) we would get free trials to use AOL for 13 freaking hours and would send away for another free trial with the same name - only with a different middle initial ^^

i can't even begin to ennumerate the ways in which the internet has changed

edit: turtle already said this.

to whomever said they remember NOT having the internet, did you have a Big Wheel? lol

Mhm, Internet went from being overly expensive so that you wouldn't really be on it for longer than perhaps an hour or two plus you couldn't use the phone for calls while someone was using it, connection and speed were way slower AND it was perfectly alright to download but not to upload (which should still remain to be the law if you ask me). There weren't as many huge community sites where weirdos would live out their douchy alter-egos, games were made by gamers for gamers and the whole buisness model wasn't as evolved as it is today where milking popular franchises is the way for succession rather than being able to creativily create new original materials which is a huge risk that few are willing to tackle.

And on and on and on.
I kinda switched topic in the middle but it felt gud to write.

Definitely. I still remember when 4chan was like a secret underground club and rules #1-2 were more than just jokes. And I still remember when MAL was Xinil.net, without any database or forum and you could list whatever you wanted.

But I'd say it's gotten funnier.

Well, it has significantly evolved. From 56K to now LTE. While I am at work, I can use blocked websites on my iphone and/or ipad and my co-workers and bosses don't care since I also use my ipad for work related purposes.

But sadly, sites that I initially used in relation to anime, most especially the Anipike, or no longer THE site for anime.
