Do you have to have seen the series to be able to understand this?

Pretty much what I asked in the title.

The genres listed for this in MAL make me think I will quite like it but I don't want to watch it first if I have to have seen the original series first.

Why wouldn't you want to see the series first?
I'd imagine you have to. The series sets everything up, this is pretty much the climax.
It's like an extended final episode, or at least I believe so.

I haven't seen it yet so I'm not sure.
If I have time I'll come back and answer for sure after I've watched everything.

Okay. Done.
So I watched it.
I highly recommend watching the series first, even though I don't think it's required. It'll still help a lot and some parts may be weird to understand without watching the series.
I've heard of people watching the movie first but I think it's stupid.

IM gona tell ya right now..Watch the show first, its highly enjoyable and the subject matter of books being censored in the near futre, combined with the somewhat Ghost in the shell like organizations, which are also similar to pre war army factions is just awsome! lol ENjoy! FOR BOOKS!!

The movie does a decent job of explaining the premise, and shows some flashbacks from the series also. (Hino Nightmare, Kasahara's reason for joining, etc.)

While I feel some major plot points are covered, I would highly recommend to watch the series first.

Optionally, watch the DVD Special OVA as well. While it's not highly crucial, you see one of the exclusive characters from there a couple of times in the movie, which is nice.
