| Seconding Baccano! and Durarara!! two of my favorites. The character design is good, the plot is even better. Also you might try Arcana Famiglia, K Project (which has the best art and animation in all of anime IMO) and even Fairy Tail (which revolves around "Guilds") |

How could I have forgotten Gungrave, yes Brandon Heat isn't the boss but he serves as the "muscle" of the Mafia and he pretty much kicks everyones ass for the sake of the family. |

| I feel like Baccano is what you're looking for, but Durarara is good, too. You should try both! The only thing about those two, though, is that there is no specific "main" character, although a lot of the important characters are strong and awesome. |
