Out of all that I've seen so far my two favorite anime have been Now and then Here and There and Koi Kaze. The only thing these two have in common is that they are both dead serious about everything, and both have very human characters that you can't help but get attached to.

Does anyone know of other serious, emotionally engaging anime?

hotarubi no mori e (the film), 5 centimeters per second, voices of a distant star, and nana (the manga is better than the anime and it depressed me so bad but perhaps it is what you're looking for n__n )

Tried to rec some emotionally engaging ones that are pretty serious or make commentary on serious issues.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

The usual show roll:
Air
Kanon (2006)
Clannad
Clannad After Story (Everyone seems to agree that even if you don't like Clannad, you're sure to at least like After Story)
ef: A Tale of Memories
ef: A Tale of Melodies

I suppose I'd also include Angel Beats! and Little Busters! (Though I haven't seen the latter yet)

Seconding all these. And wow, your mention of Fantastic Children made me happy!

Also, Planetes.
