in the end, poor writing and heavy handed melodrama is poor writing and heavy handed melodrama, no matter how much I wish to ignore it.

Could you please be more specific and provide a simple list of issues? What I got from you so far is that it was not realistic and cliche.

And I think that it was perfectly fine considering the goal - to quickly (within half an episode of the entire show) build up the drama level to the max, reach the climax, and resolve, thus completely setting up the characters and the situation they are in. It really didn't need to be "smart" and realistic because the whole show is not about how one person becomes hated by his parents and the rest of the world, but rather enduring the everyday school issues given the specific properties of the main character. I also think that it was directed amazingly well, with perfect timing for the right angles and cuts, artistic colouring, and well executed drama and comedy parts.

I mean, in the end, the show or the episode is good because it is good, not because of some clever and non-cliche plot elements. Of course, I'd love this to be another penguindrum or something of that kind, but I think it never tried to be one. And it doesn't mean it's bad. It's just different. And the quality's waaaay above the average. Just read the responses above, people were crying, laughing, enraged, and smiling. Isn't it amazing? Really, I just don't get your concerns.

Wow, that was a surprisingly great start. I never knew I could feel this bad for a character in 9 mi uses, but....wow. Drama is sometimes a great way to get people to like the show if done right. Considering this is a comedy, I like it. Great mixture of drama and comedy. I'm wondering if the drama will continue. But if it doesn't, that's fine considering the comedy is quite good. Looking toward to future episodes.

I kinda not want to expect so much from this series because there's only one episode out. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun also had a very good first and second episodes but the rest are not that great. Not that it was disappointing but it's as if the first episode was the climax of the whole series. It was still a good show (Natsume Asako ftw!). I just hope that doesn't happen to Kotoura-san. I've watched the first episode so many times and that cat part is still soooo depressing. More awesome episodes to come!

PS: Koshi Koshi Koshi!

The situation distantly reminds me of Akuma to Love Song, only with actual mind reading. Sure, in a perfectly logical world Kotoura would have learned not to say a thing. But as people there's that intense need to connect. And she seems very much the type who wants to connect through honesty. Not just covering it up with some surface niceness while she knows what is really going on.

I pretty much adore Manabe and his goofiness already.

I'll admit, I felt sympathy for Kotoura. Everything was great until that pathetic excuse for a human being male came into the scene. I'm really hoping everything else is good enough to patch up such an eyesore. perhaps it will be the fact that Hisako Kanemoto is the lead role (I happen to love her voice, and I don't really care about the Kokoro Connect scandal). Dare I say it, that thing that sits next to Kotoura may be worse than Yuuji/Saito from Shana/Zero no Tsukaima.

Ranting aside, the ED was simply beautiful.

I keep hearing these complaints about Kotoura's attitude and the reactions of those around her. You guys need to understand that it is in fact realistic. Doctors should not believe in ESP. I don't know about you guys but I'm a fairly skeptical individual and it would take much more than just a few lucky guesses for me to believe someone has powers.

In this kind of situation, we'd have plenty of people rationalizing any strange phenomena they think is not supposed to happen in their world.

And it's actually very well done. She happens to have an extra pair of ears which she can't turn off.

I know I could not help myself if I had ESP. Especially at that age.

The best first episode I've seen this season for sure. Keep the melodrama coming please. I love this couple already!

I do kind of wish that Kotoura was just incredibly intuitive instead of having ESP, I think that would have been really interesting and more relatable. Nonetheless, the ep still made me empathize a whole lot.

First part of the episode was hardcore to the max omg lol, didn't think that a comedy could start off this way. I'm expecting it to end up as a slice of life comedy and get rather boring..hopefully I'm wrong xP

This is so bizarre... the massively exaggerated drama in the first half and then the comedy of the latter half. I'm interested to see where the rest of this series is going to go, but my feelings at the moment are mostly just bewilderment.

In other words, you point to lack of emotional subtlety and lack of realism or naturalness in the described events, am I right?

Although I believe these points are well-spotted, I disagree with the need to have them actually changed. There's simply neither enough time nor point to develop the premise realistically and with subtlety.
As I said in my previous post, we're talking about 10 mins where you have the whole story background set. In fact, doing it the other way, I believe, would be wrong because it would change the focus of the show, if not the entire story.

I think the episode was great because even you questioned the way you would've dealt with the main character yourself if you were in the parents shoes. I think this is what truly matters in the end. That's why straight, unrealistic, or cliche plot devices are not bad just because they are what they are.

Those parents were just scums. Kotoura sure have had it rough. I first thought it was Akira Ishida who voiced Manabe. Ah well, it gets more lighthearted it seems.

I have to say it blow my mind so much and i thought this anime is about many friends spoiling one person for food (based on the anime cover) darn i was posting a lot of screenies on Twitter about it of how pissed and sad i was when the parents abandoned Haruka and those words really hurt her a lot from everyone she knew. I really could feel her pain as she screamed after that fucking random told her to fuck off but meh i thought she'll pick a fight with that random hag but nah she didn't but screamed it instead. As long her new school is good with a new friend Manabe.

Even i'm so pissed and sad at the same time but no matter what this anime moved me so much! so this anime has passed to my expectations.
10/10 and i won't drop this anime <3

I really don't think that the first half was to show how melodrama it was but rather to show that was how she got to the current point. Honestly, I have seen 13 episodes of Little Buster yet the impression I got from that was not equal to what I saw 10mins in this episode.

@InfiniteRyvius:

First of all, Kotoura is a honest little girl. She did what she believe is right. She doesn't lie nor she pretend to be something else like all of us do. You might as well say that she doesn't understand us who are pretending and lying all the time for the sake we all know but her. In a way, you can say that she saw no fault in her own action for telling people what they actually thought in their mind, at young age. By the time she realized it everything was already too late for her and the reason she is still doing that "response", as Firixizu_Mint said, it was to keep people away from herself. She could have chose the other option like the one you suggested "learn how to restrain herself" and make a lot of friends but by doing that that means she has to learn how to lie and pretending in front of everyone else. But she did not, she choose to be alone and be herself rather wearing a mask as you suggested.

As for her parent, have you ever asked yourself why they didn't show the face of her father? IMO, it was pretty clear that her father never give a damn about his family. Honestly, her family was never mean to be last long to begin with.

As for her ability, her parent DID feel strange about her but they never care enough to dig it out which also explain they care for themselves more than for the kid. But the way you suggested it as if like they should jump around and yelling "OMG my daughter is Professor X!!!"

Valid point with poor plot devices.

This is why I criticized the nature of those parents and their actions. It felt more instrumental in its use as a background backstory development subplot for the main character, the nature in which I felt it was bad was such that I felt it lacked good development. If anything, it was an unoriginal usage of a cynical view of adults and moreso to the extent of the effect, the school children themselves. Certainly, not everyone had to distance themselves away from her. If the boy or the girl were to be honest in the first place, I would find no harm in having some circulative rumours about loving another individual. Although we are left to understand that schoolchildren, teenagers and people of all audiences are to feel embarrassment about loving another individual or even liking them, for such a simple contrived plot such as saving the girl from bullies or falling down. The alternative to which, if such honesty was portrayed, and alas to the extent that they really had to put a mask was implausible in most circumstances. Everyone had to put a mask on and lie about such little matters. Other than the affair, which was more justified in effect with such retortive and hostile response to the child as a scapegoat.

I don't think she had to necessarily lie, she just had to not blurt out the truth from reading other people's minds all the time. She could of just forewarned them of her special ability, and still subsequently befriended them. If anything, it is a double-edged sword. Albeit she can't stop reading people's minds, but at this stage, she already or should acknowledge that humans do have feelings of distrust, anger and of such nature towards eachother even under concealment. In Kino no Tabi, we do see that mind reading leads to devastating effects of complete isolation of individuals within a society.

How was this sad? The exaggerated facial expressions ruined it, especially when the cat gets taken to a shelter. And honestly, the reactions that she got from people made sense. No one would want to stay with someone that could read their mind 24/7.

It was shown that not everyone hated her in that episode you can check it yourself again and here is the best example in real life, fresh and hot from itsvero.

Let just say that she didn't get the chance to meet the right people at the right time until now.

That could be the case if only she was able to learn the nature of Human before she was putted into this situation. The point is that she didn't even have the chance to learn anything before she learned how to read people mind.

All in all, I think this discussion is way out of place here. The entire of the first 10 mins was to show how she got here. And some people taking it too serious and trying to find fault in it. We have to know that the first 10mins is NOT what the show is really about and they only got 10 mins to make that set up happened. IMO, I think this is the best they could have achieved in that 10 mins time.

The execution and scripting in the first half was pretty bad, even if it was just an intro.

The comedy is pretty flat so far being the same old interactions between idiot-pervert male lead and closed-heart female lead.

The beginning wasn't even bad. o-o I have no idea what type of shit you guys are watching.
I like how a lot of you are taking it SO seriously. "Totally unrealistic, etc etc etc". It's a fucking cartoon.
It's never going to be realistic and you always have to dramatize a few things.

Either way, Haruka had no idea reading minds was wrong and she didn't know why everyone lied. She never understood what it was like to not be able to read minds. She still says the truth and doesn't give a shit. :I

Always have to find something wrong with something. Fucking complainers, I swear. XD Im sure your family is happy with you all.

I underestimated this, I thought it was going to be some cliche comedy about someone with supernatural powers, certainly didn't expect for them to approach the background story of the characters and so well like this. The drama will probably decrease a little, if they don't lose all the drama and balanced it out with the comedy it'll turn in a really excellent series. I'm really enjoying it.
