Reading this topic has made me realize that most of the animes I've seen were all set in Japan.

So I think my favourite from the ones that weren't would be Haibane Renmei and Utawarerumono.

For movies, it'd be Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

I am the senpai that notices you.

Maybe Kuroshitsuji and Kino's Journey...not sure though.

But, with all of the anime not set in Japan, why is it that usually every single person can speak japanese anyway?

Like in Kuroshitsuji which I just finished, even the Queen of England speaks japanese... I know it's japanese animation originally made for japanese people but that part of it isn't very realistic.

Oh and thank god most of the time they can speak Japanese - the engrish part of Black Lagoon made me laugh a little at first - but then it just gets really annoying - imagine 26 episodes of Engrish - not good XD

In most American movies and TV shows it doesn't matter what part of the world anyone is in - everyone speaks English. It's just easier for the film-makers, and the average TV viewer likely prefers it that way. Even in shows set in space, it's pretty common for aliens to just speak English, as ridiculous as that is. You just have to go along with it and suspend your disbelief a bit.
So it'll be the same for shows made in Japan - everyone will most likely speak Japanese because that's what the viewers speak. I thought it was funny when this was lampooned in the Zatch Bell manga (when Kiyo confronts the Italian Folgore, the author notes: "Warning! They understand the other's words")

(There are a few exceptions of course... the movie Kite Runner IIRC had people speaking their native languages when it made sense for them to [Afghani? No clue]. Also, for a recent anime example Eden of the East had people in America speaking English [though they seemed to be able to understand the people speaking Japanese, oddly enough...].

Ah, my top three favorites all take place in Japan, then the next three on the list do not:

4. Black Lagoon (for the most part; one arc does take place in Japan)
5. Gurren Lagann
6. Haibane Renmei

And strangely enough, the three that come after that also take place in Japan, followed by:

10. Kaleido Star

Then Genshiken breaks up the list before another stream of three non-Japanese setting shows:

12. Baccano!
13. Zero no Tsukaima
14. Cowboy Bebop

Then there's only one more foreign series on my top 20:

17. Outlaw Star
