I waited about 7 years to rewatch this episode, it is one of my favourites so far. It made feel sad, angry, desperate at the same time.
I loved Sara, and when she died it made feel so sorry for her, I'll never forget her, she was a great singer, good mother and a f*ing assassin.
The episode was very intense, one of the best in all anime history, I'never seen any other anime with an episode like this one, it was just perfect.

Best episode ever! She owned both - Jin and Mugen - but she recognized that her son is dead and gave up. Absolutely perfect in every way.

For some reason, the animation was really bad in this otherwise absolutely wonderful episode.

Animation was fine but the character drawing were really inconsistent.

They also seem to have gotten a different animator for the episode. What I mean is: not only was the quality lower, but the designs were slightly different. Mostly in the eyes.

Shame, too. Cause it was a great arc. I wish Jin and Mugen would dwell on their STUPENDOUS loss a little more, though. Cause it seemed kinda big, to me.

Yeah, really nice directing this episode, though.

OMG man. even I knew her son was dead and she was being used by those people. but I guess this show shows us that the most powerfull thing is not dojo's or samurai's, just a mom who is just trying to save her son... so deep...

I think she always knew it...
but if you are mom and you are being told that if you want to save your son you have to kill someone and you are soo talented you want to do what you can to save your son. because if you don't your mind will always think "what if he is alive?"
and plus those men were always sayying the same thing... not giving any information about the son... so it was about time I guess...

Wow ! Im absolutely speechless about this episode right now. I felt like Mugen was caring for Jin as a friend for the first time and not just as a rival when he was searching for him in the water. Mugen was in beast mode when he thought Jin was dead and he wanted to take revenge on Sara for that. Damn and that fight between Mugen and Sara was so intense and beautiful at the same time. I was worrying about Mugen in that fight because i thought he wouldnt survive it. Sara was so strong and interesting i felt really sad after she died though. I was totally blown away by everything the music the animation and atmosphere. 5/5 and im also adding Samurai Champloo to my favourite anime list for sure.

I gotta say sometimes there are some really funny face expressions especially by mugen. Jin felt somehow different in this episode. He was more open than usual. That saying with the fish is really well known even I do from our class.

The animation during that slow motion when mugen fights her towards the end was rather smooth.

My only tiny complain with this ohterwise perfect episode is Sara's extremely sudden realization. I guess it makes sense considering what someone above said but it still felt weird.

Disregarding that, this had me in awe the entire time <3

Episode 20 and 21 were simply amazing. This arc is my favourite so far. Got goosebumps watching it.
Sara's story and strength, Fuu's feelings, Mugen's frustration and Jin's caring easily just made Samurai Champloo much more worthwhile.

Great episode poor Sara Mugen really liked her, and he killed her while she could have killed him that's worse than death for Mugen, but why the government hires a great assassin like her?

The ending was really striking.
I think Sara's realization wasn't sudden, but rather she was admitting what she thought was the truth all along. (And used "my son is dead" as something she tells others as part of her cover.) I think she wanted to tell Mugen before she died in case they worried about finding him since she really did care for her son and knew that the three of them also cared for her.

i wanted to see how the fishing method and how sara connected.
“don’t fight the current. let your body flow with it then you might catch it.”
sara was the one to realize this. she realized that it was pointless to fight the current (government) and she couldn’t catch her son because he was dead.
but i do see the fucking plot hole here. why was it a sudden realization? was she blinded to her emotions?
was it this passionate desire that was scaring the fish away? this one seems a lot more reasonable if you take into consideration what she has gone through throughout her life.

that abstract entity that tells her “oh you know what your fate is” represents her subconscious. it had a ominous vibe that foreshadowed death for her. it was also a mask to hide the truth that her son was dead.

The animation was especially good this episode actually, it had way more effort and time put in than in usual episodes. It might've seemed "off" because they made it more expressive, to express how the characters felt.

Would have liked the episode a lot more if the art style hadn't gotten so ugly all of a sudden.
Seriously, all the characters looked so off-model in this one it was really distracting, even though the battle animation was great.

I'd just like to comment here even tho' it's sooooo late and behind of you guys but just like youtube. Hope you'll see this one and recognize my post to show my appreciation to this wonderful and unpredictable episode. I just want to share my emotions towards it, about the situation of Sara and being govt's puppy assassin.

Hope someone will help me to understand it better and deeply enough. maybe i'm just so affected with what's happening around right now. also relates in star wars universe about the imperial thingy as well.

I thought Jin and Mugen can end up winning together against her before she say her realisation and surrendered.

I liked this episode a lot. I found it impressing that Sara was able to fight using the flow of her surroundings. For example, if the wind is blowing in one direction and she suddenly feels disruption in the wind she's able to locate her enemy. I also like how they tied this concept to how she found out that her son had died. She realized that her son had died a long time ago when one of the many pinwheels stopped and blew away. It was a tragic, yet beautiful way of displaying her realization.

I didn t understand a thing in this episode. Once again a side character antagonist with a unknown past appears and die without reason. We don t even know why she wants to kill Mugen, why she choose to only kill Jin in the beginning, who is her child, why she realise he died, the whole episode makes zero sense.

I like Johnny he's a fun guy. I love how the advice given by him directly ties in with Sara's fighting style. After realising her son had died and that she was being used by the government she just lost the will to live.

The music played at the end matches Mugen's anger so well.
