What methods do use use to try to help overcome or improve the hours of sleep you get? Recently I have been a bit of an insomniac and am wondering if anyone out their has any helpful suggestions to help improve this.

Drop the temperature to shivering range, take sleeping pills, take naps, and the obvious:

Watch more anime

My 3 hour afternoon, 4 hour night time sleep schedule is something to be questioned. Could try it yourself though. Straight 8 hour periods are pretty hard for me.

I doubt you have the sort of open schedule I have, but I pretty much stay up until I feel dead tired... Right now I'm barely planning to go to sleep and it's 4:30 am. Then the most I get is maybe 6 hours of sleep.

Sleeping pills like Mellow said can help and try to find a good time to get yourself in bed. Sometimes I will just lay in bed for an hour without even feeling sleepy, but eventually it gets to you. Maybe while you are in bed, if you have an itouch or something you can watch anime or just stalk the MAL forums to pass the time. I do that time to time and eventually I just knock out.

Go on a 30 minute run before bed time (or if you're unfit like me, just walk around for 10-15 minutes).

Or drink some coffee a couple hours before and go to sleep just in time for the caffeine crash.

LOL.

Due to finals my schedule for sleeping was messed, I would usually get home by 3am and sleep at like 5am, then go to class at 11am lol.

The other night I KOed for 20 Hours.

I normally just catch up or watch anime off my phone until my eyes get tired. Or just flop on my bed lol.

Try to solve some math problems or read some notes from physics or chemistry classes... that's what always works for me.
The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything.

Im not really sure about exercise ... but I will give it a try.

I have a lot of trouble sleeping too, the only thing that's helped with that has been getting up at 9am every morning on the dot no matter what time I go to bed, it's helped me fall asleep faster but doesn't guarantee I get restful sleep.

Do polyphasic sleeping. I had a schedule of three 20 minute naps a day with a 2 hour core sleep at night. So, basically - you sleep 3 hours a day. I stopped though, too much free time at night doing this xD

Sometimes when you can't sleep that doesn't help. It usually just makes you tired.

There are lots of things!
First ask your doctor unless your having serious issues they shouldnt suspend your license so dont worry about that but other things are
try working out or saving a hefty project till the end of the day, anything that tires yiu out also when i was coming home from overseas
and had trouble adjusting i painted my room darker and bought a deeper color shade if you have a nightlight try covering to dim the light,
warm milk helps me sleep and heavy meals with low sugers in it will help you sleep better.
Oh but try to leave at the least 45minutes before actually sleeping after a meal or do a few excersises so you dont gain any unwanted wheight or screw with your motabalism

Run around for a bit until you tire yourself out. Combined with fatigue from insomnia and you'll knock out on your bed like a baby no problem.

Exercise may cause the opposite, you might get too excited so my suggestion would be reading books specially lord of the rings with very small letters xD and this one is 100% sure ( it worked with me) take some pills with Melatonin 30 minutes before you go to bed and MEN it will only take you 2 mins to sleep then. Tell me if it worked.

Not sure if it has been suggested yet but you could exercise for around 40 minutes to an hour. That alone should tire you out especially if your having trouble sleeping.

need to get tired enough during the day, do some exercises :)

Work out, learn new stuff or just do something active, eat lots - you will be tired if your body works physiologically correct lol
