| Hayao Miyazaki's latest film is partly an adaptation, partly original work. It directly adapts Miyazaki's manga mini-series Kaze Tachinu, which focuses on how Jirou Horikoshi's inspiration in designing the Zero fighter plane. It is not a glorification of the Japanese air force pilots of World War II, but rather a human story of inspiration that evokes the spirit of Porco Rosso. All nine chapters of the manga was published in the Model Graphix magazine, which is aimed at fans of plastic modeling (e.g. Gundam mechas, military vehicles, etc.). Kaze Tachinu takes part of its story from Tatsuo Hori's novelette of the same name, which was published in several parts from 1936 to 1937. Tatsuo Hori has been regarded as a elegant prose writer because of his poetic literary style. He often suffered from ailments related to the lung, and it reflected in his writings, including the original Kaze Tachinu. It follows the tentative relationship with a male narrator and Setsuko who suffers from encroaching tuberculosis. The narrator's attentive observations of Setsuko's condition are also interrupted with careful observations of his relationship with his potential father-in-law. They come to the agreement that the two will head to a sanatorium at the base of Mount Yatsugatake, in the hope of an improvement to Setsuko's condition. Throughout the story they are taking small steps towards the answer of whether their relationship will form into something substantial. In little snippets of dialogue Setsuko gives away clues to the narrator to the depth of her commitment, as well as if to herself. Setsuko's character is transposed into Miyazaki's story and becomes a person who interacts with Jirou Horikoshi as he seeks inspiration.
