Yamaken-kun is very weird. I feel like before we got an idea of him that happens to be wrong, since he seems to be rich and everything. The end of the anime is near and I don't feel this is going anywhere...

and that is one of the reasons why i find this show disappointing, even for my love for it. (long post ahead)

while there is nothing wrong with the pacing, the timing is what is wrong. how long have we had shizukuxharu? 8, 9 eps? and then yamaken comes out of nowhere and appears for only like 3-4 episodes and disappears. as a rabid yamaken (and yamasuzku) fan, i found this disappointing, but this also proved a problem with viewers when i watched with my mother.

i didn't understand why she couldn't see at least a hope for yamazuku, but it all made sense when she explained that haru loved shizuku enough to start changing for her. yamaken hasn't even reached that stage yet and still appears to be a rich prick, and he hasn't even understood yet why he even likes shizuku. when he enters and leaves the series, he's practically the same, basically sealing the haruxshizuku pairing; yamaken poses no threat to them.

the manga is much different. yamaken keeps talking and hanging out with shizuku, and then she does the same. he even eventually becomes her best (guy) friend of the group. at first they only talked to each other because she needed advice on haru and yamaken and him (as proven by this ep) had a past. but then they could also relate on other things and became more than just i-see-you-all-the-time-stranger (such as happening to bump into each other all the time, or being study bugs to the same school). that's one of the main reasons why he fell for her so hard. there's a reason why he's her right hand man in the OVA special. but i guess viewers really wouldn't understand that. they would probably just assume yamaken sneaked his way to the top to hang out and secretly fawn over his crush.

however, i really cannot completely blame this on this show. perhaps a S2 was expected. this show has everything a shoujou needs and more, so maybe there was a banking on that. but yes, i do understand how you feel about yamaken now that i see it from a viewer's point of view. i had read the book (i have forgotten how i even came to it) and it was nearly finished (like REALLY nearly done, i came to it when there was like 3-4 chapters left to be released) and then found out about the adaption. so when i saw yamaken and shizuku, i saw them with the full knowledge i had of the manga, not a completely new viewer.

shizuku places an enormous difference in yamaken's life and he does in her's. and even though the story (obviously) ends with shizukuxharu, shizuku even admits herself that she could have very well ended up with yamaken as well. it would have been even easier since yamaken (and his life) is nowhere near as complicated as haru.

well, that's enough of my yamazuku gushing. once again, i understand your reasons and i heartily implore - maybe even beg - you to read the manga instead. it's extremely excellent. if you want to understand yamaken and him not to be so weird, give this a read.

He wants to rip her arms and legs to be sure she doesn't go away, wow, that's extreme.
He should be more careful when he throws stuff or when he wants to hit someone because Shizuku has to endure all that.

As much as I like Haru & Shizuku, she & Yamaken would make a pretty interesting couple as well. I find him an interesting character. The character development was nicely done methinks. I also really loved the art & cinematography.

There’s too little episodes, I really like the characters. I’ll definitely read the manga!

Haru's backstory was kinda deep. But haphazardly put together as the whole picture wasn't painted.

Haru just really wanting Shizuku I guess. All that standard relationship ethic. Good episode.

Hard is selfish and unable to consider anything apart from what he wants.

Shizuku is annoying in how inconsistent she is and unfair. One minute she is saying don't come within 2 metres of her but then she lets Yamaken put his arm around her when she knows Haru is psychotic.

Yamaken is just there as a plot device and has no chance, even if he might be besuited his arrogance means he can't win. Besides, Shizuku needs a rocket up her backside and her life with Yamaken would be so dull.

Natsume is best character and better suited to Haru, although Shizuku being calmer might be what he needs too.

They could have done all of this better by making their characteristics less extreme but it's still a good watch.

Haru is better off going home and fixing things with his family. Maybe Shizuku would miss him if he wasn't in her face all the time.

No still nothing for the rich kid. Though Haru's backstory on the other hand didn't give much context either aside from the fact of him being a victim of that typical "not wanted" family member.

Natsume onto something, and we know what. More excited for that tbh.

lmao, NOTHING is happening, it's just rinse and repeat bullshit, no learning from mistakes, no major developments in character, Haru continues to be one of the worst characters ever, a walking contradiction at that (nobody is that smart, top of the year smart, yet so ignorant of everything else, I don't care if you missed middle school). Worst "romance" ever.
