I know for sure there are at least 6 "picture book" episodes, which are commonly referred to as specials: 01, 3.25, 4.33, 6.75, 8.75, 9.75. It occurs to me they're being released gradually on the DVDs of the first season, together with the "normal" episodes. It also seems that the set isn't complete yet (at least according to Wikipedia), and there are likely 2 more discs to be released, perhaps with more specials.

Though I see already now that there are people who watched up to 23 episodes, and some claiming to have watched as much as 999. I assume they're so fond of the original series they wish to consider every little scene "special". :P

But seriously, is there an official number anywhere, or at least wouldn't a sensible cap be possible to implement so that the ridiculousness didn't ensue every now and then?

1 "picture book" or "picture drama" is released with every dvd that is released in japan, so far i've seen 7 and i think they will be 9 (1 per dvd), but we'll have to wait until all dvds are released to be sure　(in amazon.jp says that the last dvd was released a week ago 9-25)
