Thank you for this app! It's great so far (tested on my jailbroken iphone 4 and on my ios6.0.1 ipad). One small thing I'd suggest is that once an anime is completed (i.e. all episodes watched) and a score is given for it, to automatically move it to the "completed anime" section.

Other than that, perhaps list the avg. MAL review score for anime you search? I know that's the main reason I search anime on MAL. Don't know how feasible that is though.

Thanks so much! Merry Christmas!

Yeah, I forgot about this case. It works with the + sign on the list and when you set the status to Completed (it updates the watched episodes) but not when you set the watched episodes manually. I'll fix this in the next update, meanwhile, set the status to Completed when you're done watching an anime instead of updating its watched episodes and it will work just fine.

Ok, I'll add it next to the number of episodes and type of anime.

Thanks for your feedbacks and Merry Christmas!

Edit: The manga support is done.
I tested with Maora's list (because it's a huge list) and I found a bug when you try to expand a category with 1000+ items (The app actually crashes, because it tries to load all the cells at the same time). I'm gonna have to disable the animation when there are too much items. I think this is fixed in iOS 6 though. Anyway, if your app crashes on really big lists, I'm aware of the problem and it will be fixed in the next version. Sorry about this.

Could you change "Animes" to "Anime" and "Mangas" to "Manga" please?? Both anime and manga are already plural.

Alright, iMAL 1.1 is almost ready to be submitted on the store. I'm gonna test on iOS 6 tomorrow and if everything works as expected, I'll post this new version on the App Store.

Screenshots:

Changelog:

1.2 will introduce a way to customize the UI a bit (especially the colors). It'll probably be a light update.
I'm aware of the problem with rewatched anime being shown as completed anime. I cannot do anything about it for the moment, I have no way to know if an anime is being rewatched or not.

Edit: Submitted iMAL 1.1 to the store!

This is extremely useful, thanks!

Love this with Manga Rock 2 + Manga Storm.

I'm using it now!

You should check out the app "Alien Blue" for reddit, it's amazing and I think if you could implement some of the things they have there onto here- the app would be better.

Thanks for making it free as well!

Just downloaded it and it instacrashes on my iPhone...

Anyway, what would you want me to add to iMAL exactly? What is so amazing about "Alien Blue" that I should implement to make iMAL better?

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

Well- first of all (sucks that it crashed), it has an amazing GUI- that leaves a whole lot of options for the users in the settings.

It contains an account switcher, if you have multiple accounts.

It includes some themes- which aren't a big thing, but it's a nice feature.

A "Night Mode" for night reading. (Text turns white, and the background becomes grey.)

---------------------

Things I think you should add- when looking at your lists- I think you should be able to browse the description of it. Maybe you could also include access to the forum?

I got PM'd two days ago by a design student who's willing to make a design for iMAL. Maybe next update will contain a new awesome GUI :)
simonheros said:

Hum, I don't see the point of having multiple accounts on MAL. I mean, I do have a second account but only to test the app without making changes on my own list. Why would you have multiple accounts?
simonheros said:

I was working on that until I received the PM from the design student, so the next update may feature a whole new UI and a way to customize it.
simonheros said:

That could be a good thing, but it's kinda related to themes.
simonheros said:

You mean, the synopsis of the anime/manga? This is only possible when searching/adding anime. The MAL API does not provide it when I get the list so I would need to make a new network call for each anime/manga to get their synopsis (that would take forever). The thing is, do you really need the synopsis of an anime you are watching? The only time where it makes sense to have a synopsis is when you're adding a new anime I think.
simonheros said:

The priority at the moment is to update your lists. I want to add community related features (such as browsing the forums, reading the PMs and stuff) but I can't do that right now.
This is an unofficial app so I don't have access to everything (unfortunately :( ). The best I can do right now is to show a webview of the forums (which is the same as browsing the forums from your web browser).
As long as the API is not updated, there are thing I simply cannot do.

Thanks for all the suggestions! :)

Thanks a lot for your messages. I'm really glad you find it useful :)

Good news: I'm gonna release 1.2 very soon.
Bad news: This version will include almost no new feature and is mainly intended to fix a significant bug (the app crashes when you set an anime to completed using the 'plus' button). A bit of personalization has been added though.

Screenshots:

Changelog:

Next post is a list of known bugs and frequently suggested features. The app will link to this post in order to help reducing the number of duplicated suggestions and provide detailed and up-to-date explanations about things I'm not willing to implement right now or things that I simply cannot add to the app.

That doesn't mean you should stop sending me your suggestions, I just think it's a good idea to gather all the suggested ideas and known issues into a single place. I've already received mails from about 25 different users (this was quite unexpected, I didn't think I would receive more than 2 or 3 suggestions) and almost every new feature since 1.0 has been added thanks to someone's suggestion. So don't be afraid to request anything you think may be useful! :)

This list summarizes everything that I'm planning to add, everything I refuse to add and every known issues.

Planned features:

  • Undo: Currently, there are logs in the app that save any change you make to your lists. You can access these logs in a plain and not very usable way by tapping the 'Logs' button on the 'Options' screen. The goal of these logs is to help you recover your lists informations in case you made an unwanted change. I'm planning on adding a convenient way to rollback any change you made to your list (right now, you have to do it by hand after reading the logs)

  • Already suggested features: Things I might add but I don't know when

    • Offline mode [comming soon]
    • Twitter update messages [comming soon]

Things I won't do:

  • iPad UI: First, I don't have an iPad. I don't want to make an UI for a device without being able to test it on an actual device first. Second, this would be quite a lot of work. I'm sorry if you have an iPad and are forced to use the app in the ugly iPhone compatibility mode :(

Things I can't do:

iMAL is an unofficial application, therefore I do not have access to everything.
Basically, what I can do with the API is: get someone's list, update their anime and manga lists and that's all.
For any other data, I would have to "read the website" to get what I'm looking for, which is extremely dangerous (if MAL's administrator changes something on the website, the app would break) and pretty hard to do anyway. I don't want to do that. I'm currently trying to find another solution.
I don't want to use an unofficial API either, because I don't want the app to rely on an external project (except MyAnimeList itself, of course). I don't want iMAL to just crash or be useless if the unofficial API has a problem and goes offline.

  • Community, Friends list, Forum, Top Anime/Manga, Favorites, People, Clubs, Blogs: I simply don't have access to this data.

  • Multi-criteria search or any kind of advanced search: The searching method provided by the API only takes the type (anime or manga) and a string describing the anime/manga (apparently, it is simply compared to the anime title and synonyms)

  • Some anime/manga infos I don't have access to: Producers, Genres, Duration, Rating,Popularity, Fansub Group, Priority, Storage, Total Episodes Downloaded, Total Times Re-watched Series, Comments, Ask to Discuss?

Known issues:

  • The landscape mode is bugged. This will be fixed in 2.2
  • iMAL will sometime fail to receive informations about an anime/manga (for example, C). This is because of the badly designed MAL API and I'm trying to find a workaround. (as of 2.2, iMAL will ask you for synonyms if it can't find infos about an anime/manga)
  • The search is limited to 50 results. This is an API limitation, I cannot do anything.

Let me know if anything is missing.

You're welcome :)

I don't know if I was being blind the whole time or if someone updated the API but I've just found a way to handle rewatching anime (and re-reading manga)... I can't set the number of times it was rewatched though. I think I just mixed up what I saw on the official API and what I saw on the un-official one... Anyways, now it works!

Since I already submitted iMAL 1.2, I'm gonna wait for it to be available on the store and release a 1.2.1 update with the Rewatching/Re-reading support!
Rewatching anime will be displayed under the Watching section just like on the website. I also added quick-actions to the Completed anime so you can set them to Rewatching easily. Unlike the website, rewatching is not displayed as a checkbox but as a new status (it doesn't make sense to have a rewatching anime with a status other than Completed anyway, so I don't need to separate the status and the rewatching flag).

Just wondering could you make it so you could take some info from the html page and view it in the app like say a the anime/manga poster and the Synopsis of the anime/manga is about plus the MAL score etc....

like the Atarashii! App for android. (Which I will never be able to get because im a Apple fan boy and will never buy a android)

Actually, Atarashii! is not reading the html but using an unofficial API.
As you can see in Atarashii!'s forum thread, the API is down pretty often an that cause their app to be unusable during these periods. I don't want this to happen to iMAL, that's why I'm only relying on the official one (if it's down, MAL is down too anyway).

Parsing HTML data from the iPhone will be a real pain along with being extremely dangerous (relying on the website's HTML pages means that if one day the admin decides to change something, the app could just break).

I could use the unofficial API and still have the ability to fallback on the official one if the other fails, but that would be a lot of work for almost nothing.
I understand it would be cool to have access to the synopsis and the MAL score, but is it necessary? It is available when you're adding an anime, which makes sense, but when the anime/manga is in your list, you know what it's about, don't you?
About what you call the anime poster, it is already available (as of 1.2 you can tap it to view it full-size).

What I really would like to add is the ability to navigate through suggestions and reviews, but I really don't like the idea of reading the HTML of the website.
Well, it is ok if there is a way to disable it I guess. I'll give it a try.

If you like Atarashii!'s UI, don't be afraid to tell me what I should change to make iMAL looks better (please don't tell me that I should just make it look exactly like Atarashii!...). I focused on making the app simple and fast, and its goal is not to be a fully-featured version of MAL on iOS, but rather to help you update your list from within your phone easily.

Currently, iMAL does no support iPhone/iPod 5 4" screen. The app looks exactly the same on those phone, but with black on top and bottom.

I didn't have the chance to see on an actual device, but according to what I see in the simulator, this is quite ugly but the app is still usable.

Since an iPhone 5 optimization have been requested so many times, I'm currently working on it. There are still things that do not work correctly and I haven't tested in landscape mode yet, but here is how it looks like:

I like how the anime page fits perfectly now :D
I'm not sure it will work though. I'm currently testing on the simulator with a recent version of Xcode, and I'll have to build the app on an older version to support iOS < 5.0. I don't know if it will still work on this old version of Xcode, but I hope so. (If it does not, I'll have to choose between the iPhone 5 optimization and the support of old iOS versions...) I'll keep you updated.

Also, it would help me a lot if someone with an iPhone/iPod 5 could test the app. If you have one of those and want to help me test the new iPhone 5 layout, please send me a PM with the following informations:
- Device type (iPhone 5 or iPod 5)
- iOS version
- Jailbroken or not
- Your device's UDID
Thanks!

Hey guys, I just wanted to know: Did the app ever crash on you?
I was reading the App Store reviews and in all the 3 autralian reviews, people says that the app crashes frequently (I have no other review talking about a crash in any other country though). I tested a bit and found no way to make the app crash.

That's why I'm asking: Have you ever experienced a crash? If so, can you describe what happened?
I haven't receive any bug report for the moment, so I really have no idea if the app really crashes. And if it does, I need to know how to make it happen.
I take that really seriously and will fix any found bug.

Thanks.

Alright, iMAL 1.3 has been rejected from the App Store because "Your app contains a launch image with a size modifier that is only supported for apps built with the iOS 6.0 SDK or later.".
Basically, Apple has explicitly dropped the support for iOS < 4.3, which means I cannot have an app that runs on iOS 3.2 AND support iPhone 5 screen size. I mean, everything works fine but I can't submit it to the store as is.
I'm now forced to choose between supporting iOS 3.2~4.3 or the iPhone 5 screen size. *sigh*
Still haven't decided what I'm going to do.

Well, personally I would go for supporting the iPhone 5 screen. This is because it is highly unlikely that someone would still be on iOS 3.2~4.3 since iOS 5 was quite a massive update for many. And since then, iOS 6 has also been released, so it is very probable that those people would have long updated their software versions. Else, if they are actually on some device that can't be updated to the latest iOS version... Let's just say that it probably won't last too long... :/

Actually, all devices cannot update to the latest iOS version.
The following only support up to 4.2.1 (so they would be incompatible with iMAL if I decided to stop supporting < 4.3):
iPhone EDGE, iPhone 3G, iPod 1G and iPod 2G.
Also, there are some people with jailbroken devices who can't/don't want to update because it could break their phone or whatever.

While those people are probably not the majority of users, I still think they deserve to be able to use the app like everyone else, and that's why I've put some additional efforts in making the app compatible with old iOS versions.
In the other hand, I understand that iPhone 5 users want the app to fit the screen and that's why I've also put time into making the app iPhone 5 compatible (and not only me, Amorii helped me a lot by testing the app on a real device).
So in the end, yes I'm frustrated that I have to choose between iOS < 4.3 and the iPhone 5 screen.

Cyverm555 said:

Well, an iPhone is expensive and I understand that some people just can't buy the newest available.

What I'm probably gonna do is release 1.3 without iPhone 5 screen support and then release a 1.3.1 with the iPhone 5 screen support, so people with old devices will still be able to get the 1.3 update, but it will unforunately be the last update for them :/ (I'm really not happy with this decision though, so I'm still trying to find a better way)

Seems like it would be more work but you could always make 2 separate apps, something like iMAL and iMAL for iPhone 5. Not sure if that's possible but if it is it would mean doing twice the work as just sticking to a single device.

Yeah, I've thought of it as well. More like 'iMAL' and 'iMAL for old iOS' though, because I think iMAL being the most up to date app makes more sense. But I don't like the idea of making separate apps, even though I don't really have the choice here.

Download it already need to add the forum part :)

Maybe later, but unless the API is updated (which is very unlikely), I won't be able to do more than simply showing the website within the app...

This seems pretty nifty. MAL doesn't like to keep me logged in on my phone for some reason, even for five minutes, so maybe this will work as a replacement for using the normal site when I'm on my phone.

Only for updating your lists.

If you still need an iPhone tester, I'm happy to give it a shot.
Been using your app for a few months now and has been the best MAL app I have used. Pretty sure I said that in the App Store review I gave you , lol.

Anyway, let me know if you need a tester. Typing this post on a letterboxed app is hard enough! I was disappointed to see this didn't have i5 support with the recent update. Sp I just popped in to learn you don't have one.

Oh and as for the new theme, perhaps you could keep it optional? I'm sort if fond if the colour scheme in use now.

iMAL 1.3 is out, and as Canadane said, it does not include the iPhone 5 screen support. This is because of Apple rejecting the app as I explained here.
Tomorrow, I will submit a new version with the iPhone 5 screen support, but will drop the support for iOS 3.2 to iOS 4.3. In the meanwhile, I plan on releasing a second app that will be exactly the same but for iOS < 4.3.
I know this sucks to make separated apps, but this is the only way. (I'm not even sure if I'll be able to submit a second app, but I hope so.)

Thanks, and thanks for the comment on the App Store as well :)

Actually, I've already done the i5 screen support but couldn't submit it, so I decided to submit the other features first. But don't worry, a new version will come very soon with the iPhone 5 support!
I no longer need an iPhone 5 tester, but thanks for asking :)

Yeah, I wanted to make it so you can go back to the old design, but this will lead to quite a lot of additional work. I'll probably do it anyway. The new theme will be the default though.

Glad to hear you've got the iPhone 5 support on the way. Keep up the great work, man.
