I rented the first DVD of Neon Genesis Evangelion to watch, and couldn't decide whether to watch the Dubbed or the 'Subbed' version of it, so I thought I would ask here.
So, which one?

Well it all depends on what you personally like. I'd say always go for the subs, unless you have a special preference for dubs.

Anyway, anime specific threads should be posted in their respective anime specific forum.

To be honest, I thought both subbed and dubbed version were pretty good. The cast for the dub did a stellar job on the voice acting of the major characters (Allison Keith voicing Misato in particular). Either way, you can't go wrong whichever you pick.

I'm currently watching Eva's dub and loving it, so yeah :D

Also, LOL at people saying SUB OBVS. Because, you know, dubs are never equal or - gasp! - better than the original voice acting. Right.

I watched both and would say that the dub is really one of the best out there. But shinji is still annoying in both.

Either is probably fine. I would just go with what you normally watch. And it's a fairly good dub.

While I'm one that almost always prefers the sub, this is one of the few exceptions. I actually found the dub to be superior.

I know opinions on this dub are divided, but I have to say - this is the dub that made me a dub-watcher. Admittedly it's a little rough around the edges - being a mid-90s ADV production and all - but quite frankly the performances of the main cast are among the greatest in dub history. They are emotional, sincere, imaginitive, and fit the characters perfectly. The fact is they're very different from the Japanese performances, and for many people that makes them inferior. But I think that's the brilliance of it - based on the script, it interprets the characters in a slightly different way, without losing any of the incredibly intense emotion the story is trying to convey. Plus there are a few brilliant Woolseyisms that actually make the script better (and, admittedly, a few that don't). I would go so far as to recommend that any English-speaking viewer watch the dub when viewing the series for the first time. It's at its roughest in the first couple episodes, but get through that and the main performances only get better, climaxing with the movies. (Incidentally, Evangelion will teach you that if there is any possible way it CAN be seen as a sexual metaphor, it IS a sexual metaphor.) Even if you end up liking the Japanese voice actors better, there are still at least a few scenes that you have to acknowledge are just incredible voice acting.

Thanks to 2007 and 2009 version (Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22), especially in english dub, because after the 1995-1997 version(Neon Genesis Evangelion), some of the original english cast are heard once again in this version although the voice of Rei Ayanami slightly change after Brina Palencia takes her place from Amanda Winn.Allison Keith as Misato Katsuragi,Spike Spencer as Shinji Ikari and Tiffany Grant as Asuka Langley Soryu(1995)/Shikinami(2009) as the original english cast in main characters remaining from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

i think the dub is pretty good, the voice actors put a lot of expression into a series that has tons of emotion and the voices fit the characters quite well

The dub of course. There are shows where only the original Japanese cast can convey the anime's emotion well enough. There are some where both the original cast and the English dubbing cast does an equally good job portraying the characters. And then there are shows in which, for whatever reason, it is only the voices of the dubbing cast that can do justice. NGE is one of those shows. It may be because when I fist watched it back in Middle school, I watched it in English. It may be because of Tiffany Grant's wonderful voice. I am not sure, but I could not stand watching Evangelion in Japanese.

Pretty much. The emotion portrayed in the English version is not even close to equal in comparison to the original one.

Considering the quality of voice acting in the original version, I actually feel like it's somewhat disrespectful to watch it with the English dub.

With that said, sub is definitely the way to go, of course. =P

I've watched both. The dub isn't really bad at all, in fact it gets better as it goes on but, yeah, I have to go with the Japanese version here. Particularly Ogata as Shinji is fantastic voice acting, she really nails the inner turmoil of Shinji's character that I feel Spike Spencer never really captured.

I should probably say that I generally prefer Japanese voice work anyway, but especially here.

yeah I accidentally downloaded both, and I gotta say, I like the sub more. I used to be a dub kinda person, but the dub took a little while to get used to. didnt sound as good as the jap. voice acting. thought it was kinda funny at first but its not that bad.

I groaned inwardly at that horrible bit of voice acting by those nameless officers at the beginning of the first episode in the English version. Again, I was happy that the voice work grew out of that. But, yeah, the Japanese version is just consistent through and through.

yeah its always nice when you can tell theyre putting more work into their VA and its grows better as the series progresses. It's like the whole anime is a tree growing bigger and about to fruit haha.
I actually dont have the last half the series subbed so Ive just been watching dub this last half. Im on ep 23 im basically just marathoning it. and yeah i agree some of the side characters dont try as hard but most of the protags seem to be doing good / better as it continues.

The line I've bolted out is probably why.
I've had the same with Dragonball / Z, when I was a kid I always used to hear the dubbed version, and when I tried to watch the sub later on it was terrible.

The dub just sticks with you as you grow older, if that's the first thing you've watched.

im torn between them, i have watched the series just in dubbed and the movies dubbed until 3.33 (because i couldnt wait for the dubbed version of 3.33 go come out) so i watched it in subs. probably the only thing ive heard from evangelion in subs, maybe ill re-watch all in subs. but im a pretty high fan of dubbed.

If you can stand Spike Spencer as Shinji, which is extremely hard, then the rest of the dub cast is very good. Particularly Misato.

Sub is the original but that's really the only thing special about if for this anime the dub has a little more detail written into it with the characters, and if your really curious spanish dub all the way.

The dub is better written, but the sub is better acted. The actors aren't bad in the dub or anything, it's just you could really tell that they didn't really care at some parts.

This is one of the few anime series where I can watch either, but I prefer the dub. The voices in the english dub just fit their characters better and it has great voice acting. I would say you can't go wrong with either, but I prefer the dub.

Lol @ people who say "sub obv" and "sub always"...

You should check scenes from both and decide for yourself, that's what I do when I'm thinking of watching a new anime.

The NGE dub is fine, I would even go as far to say some of the main characters put a pretty good performance like Misato. The problem with the dub is the same with pretty much all dubs the background characters voices actors are shit, there's no glossing over it. I would also say Rei and Shinji VA are superior in the original and considering how important these 2 characters are, the sub wins. The dub Rei VA did not understand her character and played her as emotionless robot, which is only really skin deep on what makes Rei well Rei. As for Shinji Dub its Spike Spencer and his voice can be pretty grating adding to the fact that Shinji as a character is grating can make it hard to watch.

Sub

The dub gets slightly better after a while and both dub Misato and dub Asuka are good but compared to the original version, which remains consistent through the whole show and is great from episode one, it's a relatively bad dub. Both Shinji and Rei are miles better in the Japanese dub

After watching both versions, I'd say that I prefer the Jap Dub with English Subs.
The voice acting improves and becomes great by the middle and ending parts in the English Dub, especially around the main characters. But the supporting characters, (Those who are in the control room reading off the status of the pilots) were always terrible annoying for me.
If you can overlook (over-hear?) that, the dub might be fine for you. But I honestly prefer the sub.

Dub is objectively superior. The voice actors, especially for Shinji, Asuka, and Misato are more recognizable and better sounding than the Sub version. Generally speaking, the dub simply has better audio all around, ignoring anything said about performances, it simply sounds better.

As for performances, nearly all the dub performances are objectively better than sub in my opinion. Tiffany Grant's performance as Asuka stands out the most.
