What's with the bitter-sweet send-off for Yuda? Did Rei forget he wanted to kill the man because he did terrible things to Mamiya? Shin got a similar death scene (and Ken killed him for the same reason) but at least he never deliberately tried to harm Yuria. He had a tragic flaw of arrogance that destroyed his love and his life. Yuda was just a self-obsessed psychopath.

Can't say I'm really feeling the buckets-of-tears drama going on here. I don't mind it being straightforward with sentiment but I just think Rei is a pretty dull character. He had one little piece of story ("I want to rescue my kidnapped sister") and has just been hanging around not doing particularly much since then.

The same is true of Mamiya so I'm especially unimpressed by the supposed love story going on between them.

I teared up a bit when he said goodbye to Ken and the others, especially Airi. This was indeed a powerful episode.

Holy shit.

I can't remember the last time I've seen melodrama done as well as it was in this episode, in any other medium I've seen; perhaps that's because this is the best I've seen it executed to date?

I really felt pity for Yuda, who's feeling of inferiority to someone he admired is so much ingrained in his personality that he became a broken man who puts on a facade of sellf-confidence to mask his feeling of loneliness and inferiority to Rei, at least up until the end of his life. Only now I'm wondering what will happen to the kidnapped women... I remember (but can't pinpoint when exactly) this series didn't answer what happened to another group of people that were supposedly in danger but were also saved by Kenshiro and gang.

I strongly disagree with that observation. It seems (and I apologize if I offend you) that you believe a character in a fictional story who is not outright stated to have an end-goal is a dull character and ultimately a waste of a character; you are missing the subtle details that explains why Rei is still hanging around Kenshiro and gang.

Rei is deeply indebted to Kenshiro for saving his sister, and allowing him to regain his humanity by opening his eyes. As a result, he feels he should repay him by protecting Bart (Bat?) and Lynn, and his sister who is staying in Mamiya's village as it's decided this is safest for her. With Rei as a trusted and powerful ally, he can help out the village when Ken is busy or away (the Superman/Justice League explanation), or when Ken is in trouble and needs help, like how Rei directly saved Kenshiro's life in his battle with Ken-Oh by injuring Ken-Oh with an arrow. Rei also has insight and knowledge to things Ken is unaware of. So really, Rei being around is only for the benefit of Kenshiro, though it should be noted that he is also benefiting from being around Kenshiro and gang.

Farewell Rei. Sad to say goodbye to one of my favorite characters of the series, right up there with Ken. Was always enjoyable watching Rei and Ken team up together, they seemed to work so well. It was also funny when Rei occasionally said Ken's favorite line "You're already dead" :) Was glad to see him live a little longer and be able to have one final fight for the sake of his love. He was truly a man among men.

Am I the only one that didn't give any shit about this arc? I mean Rei's death was dragged on what felt like forever, glad he finally died so we can move on already. The random romance between him and Mamiya didn't help either...

This was surely not the best arc we have seen so far but I wouldn't go that far saying I didn't give a shit about it. I mean Yuda as a villain was pretty solid and interesting, but they could have gone in a bit different story progression wise. But the goodbye of Rei was really good and heartfelt.

Btw, who else expected Yuda to "fake" his death and stab Rei or/and Mamiya in the back when they weren't expecting it? It didn't happen but would have been fitting for his deceitful character up until that point.

Nah Yuda I don't believe it for a second, don't go "I'm not a bad guy"
He's a lonely guy so he made people suffer, sounds like a modern bully to me

Aww Rei :(

Great as always but as the guy above said I don't understand why Rei became THAT sentimental when the drag was dying. great anyway.

Ken raising that GIANT rock was epic haha.
Very sad episode, Yuda is finally dead and Rei is saying goodbye to everyone because he is going to die...
Rei was sure a great character.
So the next episode is the last episode of the second arc.

I expected Yuda's death to be more cold blooded like when Kenshiro killed Jagi, but it looks more like Rei caring for Yuda.Pretty weird since Yuda did a lot of cruel things, heck even Jennifer didn't get such a caring moment after getting shot by the canon.

Rip Rei, dying without being able to do anything against it....he was a pretty good character to have on the show...

Lol. I really liked Rei and am going to miss him. A great sidekick to Ken, but this arc really was sort of meh. I didn't care for Yuda or the supposed weird romance. Rei's death was definitely dragged. It was like the creator wasn't so sure if he really wanted to kill Rei off or not LOL.

+1

I was convinced Yuda was just using that sob story as a distraction so he could pull off something sneaky again. I'm still not sure I believe him. lol

Basically this Yuda had a crush on Rei that of course he couldn't accept. There was a clear homosexual undertone throughout the whole thing but maybe I'm the only one who saw that? His words were pretty clear in that regard
I really didn't expect the homosexual bit... Yuda with the makeup on did look odd as a macho guy but still didn't think he was in love with Rei in the end. Nothing wrong with that. It was certainly an interesting twist.
I didn't feel too sorry for him. He seemed just a psychopath to me. To be honest even Shin's death didn't elicit much sympathy in me either. Can't forgive people who tortured other human beings for fun. Even if under the influence of some other psychopath like Shin was.
I thought they would have saved Rei. He looked like a pretty central character. Not even Jesus/Toki could save him :(
At least Mamiya is now safe from the Death Star as she can't see it anymore.

Yeah, at least we got shown time and time again that Ken and Shin were once friends. And Jagi telling how he corrupted him makes sense.

And I also found this romance between Rei and Mamiya kinda weird. I mean, Rei is the same guy who ripped Mamiya's shirt while she was bathing Lin, for no apparent reason. You'd think this would have a bigger impact on having romantic feelings about that same person.

Rei is a nice character, mainly because he is one of the few powerful guys that aren't trying to kill Kenshiro, so it was nice having someone who could actually fight hundreds of dudes, besides just having Lin and Bat.

I didn't get sentimental, but I don't blame the anime much. I just find it hard to get sentimental with Shonen in general.

Maybe the first genuinely great episode of the entire show. Rei's fight with Yuda was really good, and the imagery of the swan was excellent. Also loved the Ashita no Joe reference at the end.
