can filters be added to filter out shows that i know will never watch (and quite frankly have no idea why they might be recommended since i don't watch Hentai....)
some things i had in mind being filter for genre and/or content rating (G/PG etc.) maybe either filtering our or putting extra emphasis on a preferred category

Filtering out hentai was planned, but development has stopped. I'm not sure if I'll resume development because I have hopes that http://hummingbird.me will replace animerecs in the recommendation space. There's much more room for a recommendation engine to be good when it's fully integrated with an anime and user database.

I recently discovered Animerecs but when I tried to use it I get this: "Sorry, something went wrong when processing your request."
I have checked that my Username was typed correctly (Even made sure it was Capitalised correctly) I even tried using other people's usernames but it didn't work.
I made sure my list is Public which it is (I presume thats pretty important)
I disabled all my browser add-ons.
I tried a different browser (Started with chrome, later tried Firefox)
I tried a different device.
None of this changed anything so any help would be greatly appriciated.

MAL's API, what Animerecs uses to get your anime list and to maintain its internal database of users it uses to calculate recommendations, has been down for many months. There is supposedly work being done on either restoring the API or developing a new one, not sure which. I have been incredibly lazy and have not updated the site to inform users that is why the site is not working. I appreciate your enthusiasm in attempting to get it to work!
