I think this is to show the complexity of Shimao's bond with Rokka. On the one hand, Shimao wants Rokka to be happy and find another person to love after he dies; but on the other, he's not willing to let her go to another person, even if the person is Hazuki, who may just love Rokka as much as he does.

Also, I start to think that rather than being selfish, Shimao really is just childish (e.g., pranks he pulled to interfere with Hazuki's interaction with Rokka, the sketchbook fairy tale, unable to decide what he really wants for Rokka).

-snip-

Childish is my impression as well, or perhaps a dreamer who's not satisfied until he's got/achieved most he's dreamed of. In his condition perhaps understandable, but doesn't make him any less irritating a character. Not counting his relationship with Rokka, the most he achieved alive was opening the store. Yes, opening a business is impressive, but how big/decisive role Rokka had in that we don't know. Propably lot as she said she was the one taking care of the ordering etc. while he seemed to have the "artistic" role in the store.

This episode had two things underlining Shimao's regrets and unfilled desires "Kazuki is the one who is stealing", while from viewers point of view ridiculous, not impossible feeling from character. For me more interesting was the potted plant. As a kid his father denied potted plants in the hospital room, as an adult he had one in his room. He wanted to travel and propably plant the potted plant as well and now he's doing it.

As a little off topic. One big regret he had was not being able have kids, because he was (or had become because of treatment?) sterile. Well there's a chance he's getting his wish as he's now slept with her ex-wife in a supposedly fertile (correct word?) body. Plus I don't remember what kind of after life situation this series is leaning to. Reincarnation perhaps? ;)

On the whole I'd like to enjoy the series but it's becoming more irritating and dragging than enjoyable. Mostly because of the IMO terrible fantasy scene limbo they've thrown Kazuki into. It doesn't help either that so far the only sympathetic character for me has been Rokka. Shimao is at least interesting, but so far there's been very little interesting about Kazuki. What else do we know about him except his fixation on one person?

Shimao that asshole! Make your peace and give back Hazuki's body already! He's just making the whole situation worse by playing with Rokka's mind. What a selfish bastard.

This show is definitely out of steam. I can only take Shimao's dickery and "I guess I still love Shimao" for so long.

I get everyone's frustration... But I also get how some enjoyed this episode ( great display of imagery and memory...).

Honestly though, I feel like we REALLY need to get some plot advancement in episode 9. I am a sucker for moments of unrequited love..etc...etc... But this episode put me at my limit of non-verbal, non confrontational melodrama. One of the main things I LOVE about this show was the upfront nature (refreshing) of the protagonist, yet now his body had been bogarted by a passive ghost.

Over it. Please more advancement next ep!!!!

I had thought that Shimao would be handling over Hazuki's body after tying those "loose ends". But wait, where are they going now? Lol.

I wonder if Hazuki will be able to go back to his body in the next episode.

He's never getting his body back. I don't even consider him a main character anymore.

That hat Rokka wears is hideous. Is it like a basket or something?

I am getting real tired of the sketch book world or whatever. It just seems so pointless. And Shimao has had the body for like 4 episodes now. Switch back already and just die.

I couldn't help but laugh when Atsushi sang the "We are all alive" song, it reminded me of Ping Pong instantly. Such a simple song but such a profound message behind it, especially considering the context of his situation.

Bad bad bad bad bad. It's been bad since Shimao got Hizuki's body.
And I even hate Rokka now.

This episode was kind of boring. I prefer Hazuki in his own body instead of Shimao. I like Shimao but just not in Hazuki's body. I think the parts with Hazuki in Shimao's freaky wonderland is pretty boring.

I can see why so many felt like this dragging, but the narrative is focussing on Atsushi and his actions and no matter how irritating, they are coherent with his characterisation. He's simply living out what he wasn't able to in his body.

Still glad that Hazuki is finally coming back and it seems like he doesn't want to play the second fiddle anymore.

Nice, Shimao. If you keep messing with Rokka's emotions, it's practically a given she will never want to be with another man again for the rest of her life. Your plan seems to be working, asshole.

This mid-section of the show is so slow that I'm starting to truly appreciate the fact that somehow the dumb fucking bucket hat is still part of Rokka's wardrobe.
