I just watched this movie again, this time though was for my anime film series class. Apparently, i don't remember as much as i thought i did. anyways i thought that movie was really interesting, really intense. as expected of Kon Satoshi.

Yes, I've actually seen this film. It was very trippy and confusing if you haven't paid attention in the slightest. I'll have to watch it again.

I've watched it once, and would have preferred to see it in English so I could pay more attention to the subtle hints. It's a good movie, but I think it was a tad over-rated.

Over-rated? I'd say under-rated, if anything. Satoshi Kon is the master. Everything he touches turns to gold.

Eh, I heard a lot of hype about it and though I did indeed like the movie, I assumed it didn't meet my expectations.

I can dig it. Compared to his other stuff, and because of a lot of the hype, I can see why people might have too high expectations. But, for his directorial debut, it was great.

Still one of my all-time favorite anime films. It's a good one to show to people who are looking for more mature animes. :)

Honestly, I didn't really like it. I looked it up after watching Paprika, which I absolutely loved. It was well-made, but I didn't enjoy it at all.

Perfect Blue is great. Especially if you've seen what Kon did to manipulate the original story into what he used for his movie. This is how a good psychological thriller is made.

Agreed, a very good psychological thriller. It was pretty trippy when it was revealed who the killer was. I was so confused and shocked that I was frozen. Really weird.

Mima was only going partially crazy from guilt and paranoia which was also being fed by the already crazy Rumi.

that still makes it confusing lol. There was so much stuff that happened that didn't make sense once we found out who the killer was.

Just watched this movie and I have to say that I thought it was pretty good. I had always wanted to check it out as it's one of the 'must watch' anime movies in quite a few 'best of' lists, and it didn't disappoint in quality... but I did have a complaint.

I don't have a good one because I don't photoshop :(

For an anime movie the story and plot was somewhat unique, but if it was live action this movie would be just another dime-a-dozen multiple-personality, suspence, thriller films.

In other words, I was less than impressed.

I did the same. After I watched Paprika, I went and looked up some other movies made by Kon. When I came upon Perfect Blue, I was iffy about it. When I was finished with the movie, I had mixed emotions. I found I liked it, but in a different way that I liked Paprika. I liked Perfect Blue, because of the way everything happened, in the movie, and the way Kon portrayed it. I also liked it because of the mystery in every plot twist. You saw one scene that contradicted another, which made you think. Kon turned things up-side-up-around and down, and was still able to make sense of it all. And though, some of those things can be applied to Paprika, I liked Paprika for different reasons. Not only for its gorgeous animation, but for its color, and intertwining story line, and brilliant characters out the wazoo. They were two very different movies, but I still enjoyed both.

Two words:

Mind F***

Also, the scene that was the most memorable, and the one that made me the most uneasy was the first rape, the one for the show. That scene, plus later when she gets back to her apartment, and the image of the dead fish causes her to have a breakdown, still sticks in my memory.

what a ride, this is the only anime for the first time which made me pause it halfway because the plot has become deeper and even more crazed.

9/10 definitely recommended to everyone who likes the psychological genre

9/10 from me too

Interesting plot and well directed (I mean to the point that the conclusion depends on which perspective we are using and that is a great thing for psychological story like I said in the spoil).

btw paprika is great and even better than this one.

I had heard about this anime but never watched it, browsing through the Xbox live films I found it, and downloaded it for a few days.

While watching it parts confused me a little, but through it a began to understand.

I really enjoyed it! It was different from other anime's I've seen, and I'm tempted to buy it, as i'd watch it again, as i do with most my anime.

I saw Perfect Blue last night. I enjoyed it, but it's my least favorite of Kon's shows, and I've seen them all. The end felt a little bit like "The butler did it!" to me.

I watched this after Paprikab and Milenium actress, it´s different, but I still loved. Although I could say who was the murder since the beggining I could fell the frustration and confusion between what is real or not. Great film, great history, watch it!!

agree with that actually. Also, I think I enjoyed the first half but when it gets trippy, its a bit too much. I like trippy stuff, but the psychological aspect in the latter half was a bit too forced. It was a unique movie for an anime, but if you're into live action stuff there are wayy better psychological thrillers out there. Thats a good thing if you're more into anime than live action, but not so good for people who've seen more live action than anime.

The only thing that gives this movie the edge is some of the stuff that could only make sense with animation, like most of the scenes with the fake mimi
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I realize I'm quoting a post that is a almost 2 and a half years old, but I thought I should post anyways.

First of all, RIP Satoshi Kon. You will forever be remembered for your amazing directing skills and innovative vision.

As for the movie:
There was a live action for Perfect Blue and it wasn't as amazing, but there is also an american movie that just came out entitled "Black Swan".

Many of you who like Perfect Blue would like Black Swan. As for those of you who don't like Perfect Blue, you probably wouldn't like Black Swan either. Both are psychological stories that delve deep into the human psyche in regards to Split Personalities and the mind's ability to cope with stress and pressure. If Perfect Blue requires you to think too much about its plot depth, then you should avoid Black Swan as well.

It is said that Black Swan's director was at one point greatly inspired by Perfect Blue. If you have seen both movies, you can definitely see the resemblances.

Never into it much. I gave it a 5 out of 10. I have seen stuff get more done in far more subtle ways, and I have seen more psychotic, mind and soul bending things that were more meaningful and impactful. Perhaps I need to rewatch it one day...but I dont care to.
