I thought it was decent, but even as a non-LN-reader, I thought it could have been waaaaay less rushed. Despite that, I thought it was fairly emotional, not just enough to get me to tear up.

Anyway, to any LN readers out there, is there anything else that happens between Klein and Kirito? Because I didn't find those scenes very explanatory or that emotional, it just seems like it should be an important longer scene. I know about that battle everyone's mentioning and the scene where he tries to break the item, but what are the others characters reactions/what else happens?

wow what a bummer, this was a sad episode thing where looking up then bam smacked back, Kirito was taking it hard to the chest a whole guild the his said he was gonna protect just fell apart in his hand, the worst part about it was the guild leader jumping to his death and Kirito trying to save sachi just to find out that has was still to late, hope the next episode is better.

Btw: did anyone catch them self sing the song i know i did haha.

It felt like I skipped an episode or something.
I better get used to the timeskips per episode.

Felt so sorry for the guild he joined, the leader took suicide himself.

Good episode, but it was a little too rushed for me. Maybe if they put this guild in two or more episodes I would have felt a little more emotionally attached. I'm glad the revival item didn't work, I wanted her to come back, but it would have been a major cop out.

Like what many of us have said, I felt that this episode was kinda rushed as well. A newly-introduced character dying in the same episode just doesn't give enough impact. It could've been done better IMHO.

Putting that aside, from an avid MMORPG player's point of view, S.A.O is seriously the best anime one can ever wish for. Teleportation devices, the typical treasure chest trap & many more. How I would LOVE to play S.A.O, lol.
Well, putting apart the dying-when-ma-hp-reaches-zero issue aside though. =O
And heck, why would they assign a girl who's afraid of standing in the front lines as the 'tanker'? Isn't it obvious that she's not suitable to fill in that role?

Looking forward to the next episode~!!

I think for a single episode adaptation, this was the best option they could have possibly done. Of course it could have been better with two episodes. But life isn't always that idealistic. So far, I'm glad that with only one episode, the main points of the story is still carried across.

However, they really want to get into the main story...

For people wanting more details, please refer to the novels.

Chrischunn said:

As a reader of the novel I feel that although to an extent, it felt rushed, but I still felt that it did justice to the actual story. All the main points were conveyed. I see where many people are coming from when they say they felt no sense of attachment to Sachi; but if if you've read the novels, you'll come to realise just how much that event impacted on Kirito. I shed a few tears (I let it go easy LOL), and it felt good.
.

This too. I really felt the main points were well conveyed. My friend who hasn't read the novels found it only slightly rushed but overall still really good episode.

Note: I have not read the source material. All that I know about this anime is what I've seen so far.

The pacing in general seems to be going at light speed. 3 episodes and we've already had 2 giant time skips. I had good vibes from the first 2 episodes, but this one worries me. I don't want another Fate/Zero with 30 seconds of beautifully animated, amazing, edge-of-your seat action with 23 minutes of poorly paced, irrelevant talking heads.

Although the entire death of Black Cats was extremely rushed, it did set up the reasoning behind Kirito's solo quest: he doesn't want to feel responsible for other people's death. So far though, Kirito is a nice change from the loser male protagonist (I'm looking at you Porky from Accel World). And there was no overdramatic, long and tedious death monologue like in episode 2, which is a good thing.

What conveyed the emotion behind the loss was what they did right: Kirito's facial expressions.
If only they had built up to the scene more, it would have had more emotional impact.

I hope they stop reusing the song at the end with Sachi's message. It has the exact same melodic line as one from Fate/Zero. It just bothers me so much...

Ok for the light novel readers this episode feels a little rushed but then again it wasn't a long side story and had all the important points in it, so for being rushed it was pretty well done.

For the anime only viewers this might feel rushed for a completely different reason, and that would be the time skips. But there is a reason for this, besides a very short starting chapter, day one starts off the Light Novel and then a large time skip occurs larger then anything seen yet in the anime.

Spoiler for how long of a time skip;

A while later the Author of the Light Novel wrote a few short stories that happened during this long time skip, which the anime is covering in the order they occurred in the plot timeline.

However these short stories occurred at random times during that large time skip, so between the stories are more time skips. If this is your first experience with the story then all these time skips can give off the feeling of things being rushed.

It seems for now we got around two more left probably and the main plot of the Light Novel will start at episode 6, expect the time skips to lessen a bit then.

Well i wasnt expecting much from this ep anyway.
The fact that they didnt focus on the relations and emotions means it was a pretty deadpan episode.

i know right, reki is certainly an mmorpg gamer for knowing all this, i would definitely play SAO if it was an actual game

they put her in the front lines because the rest of the team had already leveled up to become spear specialists while sachi had only started and was still a novice so it was much easier to convert her than the rest, also i think they also did it to improve her confidence because she found it difficult looking at enemies and she didn't want to get close to enemies and picked the longest ranged weapon-the spear-so by getting her in the front lines they could balance out the teams and help her get used to living in SAO

again this wasn't made clear unlike the LN

Felt rushed. Sachi's death had no impact whatsoever.

I also had issues with the guild just casually going to a higher floor. I mean.. if the game you're playing makes you die IRL if you die in the game, one would think you'd be more cautious instead of going up floors just because you think you're high enough for it.

Really not a fan of time-skips, especially one as big as this. I mean in the last ep they struggled just to clear the first floor. Now all of a sudden we jumped to floors 20-37. Meh.

I fear this anime is getting rated too high simply because it's based around MMO's. I mean I play and love MMO's myself, but come on.

Really like how characters actually die in this. It's a nice change of pace from stories where characters are saved after suffering seemingly fatal strikes (not a fan of the suicide however).

Although I was sad to see Sachi disappear just like that, I felt it was a good way to build on Kirito's character and why he prefers the lone wolf approach. An attempt to add an emotional touch.

However I have to agree with most of the comments, the build up was virtually non-existent and would have had more impact if it weren't so rushed.

The time skip went up to 49, which 49 was near the end of the episode. Yeah the guild was pretty stupid, and the leader blamed Kirito even though he wasn't the one to wanted to go to floor 27, unlike the other guildie..oh, and then he suicides. +1..

Novel spoiler:

That's not gonna happen until (most likely) episode 5. Following the Chronological Order, we should see Kirito with Elucidator in the next episode and the introduction of Scilica.

Onto the events of today's episode. My only issue here is that they skipped the part when Kirito finds out about the crystal's limitations and starts stamping on it in frustration. That..and Kirito's reckless level grinding from the beginning of the chapter in the novel. The real issue is that the emotion conveyed by the novel isn't conveyed as much in the episode.

Novel spoiler:

-insert arbitrary comment on how rushed it was-

Really? If that's the case then my bad. Thanks for the clarification btw. I'm gonna read the LN after the anime series has come to an end. I think that would be a better idea considering all the rage from LN readers.

Yea, but S.A.O is pretty much a decent series for now. Anyway, the score & ratings would be standardized when it ends.

This just reminded me of myself in most MMORPG's I play, I usually get to high level really fast and then I try to get newbies to higher levels myself and making guilds with me as mentor with tons of new players. I'm always into this "protecting" stuff, they get PKed, I track the PKer down and take all his equip. Usually, after I do this, I quit the game for a bit and hear my guild is in top 10, with my first members being the leaders T.T. Of course, I'll be the one that doesn't remember anything of the game and slightly lower level than them.

Sachi had enough character development to have a good tear jerking moment (at least for me), I understand Kirito's guilt and pain. I wanted to see Nicholas's death tho and I hate that they didn't show the fight or how he escaped right away from the trap. Also, they could explain how he levels up fast to us at least.

4/5

It doesn't feel as rushed as you guys are implying.

I need to reread and re-watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. How in the world did Warner Brothers manage to condense a 900-page book into 90 minutes without pissing off fans?

Obviously this series is taking its main character's development seriously. However, watching Kirito change from his interactions from Klein (in the first episode), Diabel (in the 2nd) and Sachi (from the third) is like watching candles being light. Yeah, I can see the light, but many viewers pointed out, I care more about how they are lit. Translation: Develop the side characters and their interactions, so Kirito change makes sense!

So many things happened in this episode, it was rushed but it was still enjoyable.

Sachi was such a cute character omfg. The bed scene with Kirito and Sachi was so nice. Such a shame that the Black Cat guild members all died in the trap along with Sachi. Kirito taking the blame for their deaths. The leader of the guild committed suicide since he lost all his members.

Gotta feel really sorry for Kirito. Kirito defeated the weird-as Santa Claus boss and retrieved the revival item but it only works within 10 seconds of dying. Heartbreaking to see Kirito all depressed like that. Klein really wants to help but can't do anything.

That surprise gift box message that Sachi sent before she died was so touching. Her humming the christmas song was so saddening, fuck me. Oh man, I almost teared up and it's only the 3rd episode. Curious to find out what episodes next episode. *sniffle*

Even thought they rush it, all important part explanation and everything was in this episode, we maybe not saw Kirito battle against Santa boss, but even thought we didn't see it, all the important part was covert.
Now we know who Sachi, hmmm Next episode will be The Black Swordsman , where did I hear title The Blacksword man before, next episode going to be good. :D

Edit: I check back the novel volume 2, there it is.

I also didn't felt like the episode was rushed and thought that it had a good flow to it. Can't compare novel to anime version since there is only so much material that can be put in a 30 minute show. From the comments that I've read, this seem to be side stories from the main one so it shouldn't matter much to have some missing content. I want the show to move forward to more AsunaXKirito interaction. Like the start of the show so far and hope it doesn't disappoint me like Mirai Nikki did.

Hmmm, so the fight scene where the Black Cats of the Full Moon died was kinda lame. pacing wise... I think they should've
-removed the intro a la Fate/Zero
-removed the stuff about buying a house
-maybe shown Kirito saving the Black Cats
-extended the death of the Black Cats
-shown the vote of whether or not to open the treasure chest (since it makes more sense why Kirito feels guilty)
-clarified that Kelin dueled a member of the DDA (His guild Furinzakan isnt that strong)

-explained why the hell Sachi was singing (she should've sung...) Red Nosed Reindeer!!!

"Why did I only remember [Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer]? The previous night, Kirito said something to me, "No matter who you are, you definitely can make a difference in someone's life." Telling me that even if it is me, there is a place where I belong. After hearing those words, I was extremely glad and I remembered this song. I don't know why but it was probably because I kind of thought myself as Rudolph and you as Santa Claus.... if I have to put it in words, you give off a fatherly feeling. My father left me when I was still very young, that is why every night when I was sleeping beside you, I kept wondering if that was the feeling that a father would give. Ah, okay, I'll start singing."

Also, I really hope they aren't trying to do ALO and SAO in 1 season. I keep hearing that this is the case. Can anyone provide me with evidence if so?

Weak episode. While some shows go with a 'monster of the week' to chew up episodes, this one seems to have created the 'irrelevant character of the week' as an alternative. As the main character isn't particularly sympathetic, it doesn't help when everyone else exits the show as soon as possible.

As others have mentioned, the pacing sucked. The action scenes were pretty action-free. This was a step back from the previous episodes.

Two questions, ignore them if the answer involves spoilers:
1. Why was the message from Sachi delivered specifically on Christmas? Did she anticipate she would not survive the game for another year? What if she did, talk about awkward.
2. How Kirito that far ahead of everybody else? Aside from him grinding at night, surely he cannot keep up with the ones in the top guilds that grind all day long.

A decent episode, almost felt like a filler, yet I somehow I enjoyed this "first love" episode a lot more than Fate/Zero's than I should have.

The message was dated for Christmas. She could've removed the message if she was alive.

2. Kirito is a solo player so he can get more exp than parties. He knows the best ways of getting exp like he says in the ep. Also Black Cats is like within 5 levels of the clearing groups so he probably gets decent exp training with them.

To all LN readers, hows the novels compare? Reason is that these eps are going too fast for my liking. I mean come on; on scene they're at level 21 and the next they're at 48. Feels like I'm missing something here.

Anyway I may pick up the novels after this show is over because I don't want this bad taste in my mouth and wonder if I missed some backstory that was cut.

Novel starts off at floor 1- then immediately goes to 74. The author later wrote side stories take place in various other floors lower than 74. Before the side stories you had a real lack of characters. You'll have to deal with the timeskips.

Read the LN; its better. Shame ufotable didn't do this or something
