THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The premiere at AX ended up showing the second episode, as well as performances of some of the songs that will be used in the anime. That ED is pretty glorious. Oh, and Kouki was there. He dedicated this episode to the events of the tsunami (because of the similarities in destruction).

I have no problems on the actual episode itself, though I just might be biased as a Muv-Luv fan. The BETA make their first appearance, and they look great in anime form. Things did seem to move rather fast (probably for the better, as this is only a backstory), but I still felt that the general atmosphere of the VN was established with the transition from slice of life to hell, depression, suffering, PTSD, and overwhelming BETA (with obligatory chomp from the Soldier Class, complete with uncensored organs). Well, the deaths obviously lack much severity, though they seemed to somehow make nods towards the VN. With this episode, the stage is now set.

Oh, and those mechs. Those mechs. That Takemikazuchi.

Yeah, that really shocked me too. But considering that the MuvLuv series does go through that stage it is quite appropriate, but they literally crammed all of that into 2 episodes which was...interesting.

AND YES AMAZING Takemikazuchi mech SAVE AT THE END LOL.

TL;DR: Second Episode - BETA'S: IMMA FIRIN' MAH LAZORZ!

I am going so shit down. The worst part is I wanted a series and I wanted this exactly. It's scary what you wish for. Guess I will be getting my threat soon enough. It's as you mention the gore depiction is something I seeked in this aspect since I would remember from Blue Gender. That series had stuff like that.

That's not the 2nd episode, that's another older anime with a similar premise which I can't remember the name. It's pretty obvious that's not Total Eclipse, the art style and pallet is too different, not to mention the monsters don't look like BETA at all.

OK I caved in. I really don't think I will get over my mortification now. So the best to express my state are the 2 following expressions,

whom I felt about this episode the same way that is in regards to the spoiler
glass girl is dead! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

YAMASHIRO IN THE SPOILER
FUUUUUUUUUCK! DEAD! I think I will leave this like that as RAGE seems pretty right against BETA! WTF is Wing Zero? WTF is the craziest Gundam? I regret now wishing for another series like Blood-C where more limbs get taken out, blood splatter everywhere and cannibalism rampant on all angles. There is also her in the spoiler
totally insane.

And to think that something like Saikano/Blood-C came out like this series might be. I never knew how strong one's wishes can be in wanting a specific type of series. Muv Luv truly did all I wanted but I never knew I could be this shocked. This will take some time to get over with. I strongly encourage hatred towards BETA. Truly SICK SHIT this series is in terms of gore and blood. The censors might have been the saving GRACE till the BDs reveal it all. Might edit my first post if I get over this now. I should have heeded the warnings last time.

It is? I have no idea then again it will be similar to it as to why would my friend show me something like this. Expecting the worst in Blood-C style. If done right since it will be uncensored it will shit loads of people. I have seen the reactions of Blood-C censored. It was a lot to say the least already.

The gruesome part of Muv-luv, they were only shown at crucial moments where we were least expecting them. Like a kick in the balls, they don't get shown blatantly, they are shown at the moment that can make you shit bricks, well I dont know if total eclipse will be like that or not though.

Blood-C did the same in their way but once again I will do the best in showing this GIF wise what setup they may use in this series (hopes were mass graphical gore and no censors show it all style), just hoping no censoring shall be done with some stations. I shall leave as this for now. Deviating thread too much is not good.

Well, if there's one thing, I enjoyed the OP song quite a bit this episode.

Also, quite the action as well as blood in the beginning so I guess business are starting to pick up. This also for some reason felt like watching Starship Troopers but with mecha when I've watching this with the "bugs" being those strange invaders. I'm still not sure to say the overall structure of this episode will work out for me though as it still seems rushed and not clicking well.

Gorelicious episode.

I dunno, it's a very small GIF and I'm not one too deeply look into it, but otherwise they looked like the destroyer class that was running down Kyoto....but then again I was zombie tired after they made us wait in line for over 2extra hours befor3 it started :(

Girls are trying their best, but OnoD's character still not appearing.

Unfortunately the world got destroyed. Then 3 years past.

There was nothing at ED (ED roll), but the song is nice.

Yes, that gif is from Blue Gender.

Somehow it feels wrong saying I liked this episode, but I did. Always been weak for the 'humans vs invading aliens' theme, so this fills that spot nicely. I didn't expect the jump, and really hope for some sort of backstory for those three years before Yui gets settled in her new place. Looking forward to next week.

I was actually laughing to be honest and wasnt surprised. I knew all of them would die. This was much better than 1st episode.

I knew every time one person got happy or lost their composure they was dead. I saw it 2 many times in animes.

I can't help but grip arm whenever the alarm went off in the TSF. Fucking animated BETA. Didn't really expect them to be animated since this was supposed to be a sidestory set in Alaska, but I am very satisfied with how they did it.

EDIT: DAT TAKEMIKAZUCHI

It's good that they didn't drag it on with the girls dying, now the main story's starting with Yui going to Alaska.
After 1st not-so-good episode i didn't expect this would be so much better, we've had some action, some suffering and unfortunately, censors. BETA CGI looks good, i'm looking forward to next battles.
I would like to know who was piloting that Takemikazuchi by the end, it looked so OP. But where did all the Soldier class BETA go when it appeared? They seemed to be close but only Warrior class started attacking it.

Also i may be twisted, but that commander dying right after saying the lasers won't get them in current position almost made ma laugh out loud.

Half-assed job with the opening in this episode but it was still good to watch I can't wait until the bd is out it would only make it so much better uncensored.

Half-assed, they just took some scenes from the first episode, it was actually kinda embarassing. Just another thing that makes me think the budget on this anime wasn´t what the producers wanted.
I expected blood and gore accompanied by a feeling of utter hopelessness. Ended up with choking on my soda suppressing my "WTF" feelings.

Finally it feels just a bit like Muv Luv Alt. Except still nowhere as gripping because in MLA you really feel it when someone dies. But its the second episode and they didn't spend time developing those characters. So it is to be expected. They needed to do something to set the tone of the world. Now its time to see how well they do character development.

Good episode...way better than 1st one.

seem this show may fulfill some of its potential afterall :)

I wonder who the pilot of the Takemikazuchi was because the way he/she used the sword was epic

sad, how this tends to happen in wars and stuff..

aside from that seems good so far, so might keep watching

felt kinda bad though, Izumi died, and so did the other girl.. (I would have shot her though... its better then staying alive and then being eaten....)

I was worried that as a sidestory it was gonna be filled with just mock battles and wouldnt show us the despair of war.....boy was I wrong.

Its good to finally see BETA in anime form and it seems they are even going to show us a CHOMP scene in the BDs...good becuase I wasnt prepared, the moment soldier classes appeared PTSD started again....

Great episode. Wish they didn't have to censor so much but oh well, makes it all more sweeter when the Blu ray lands in September. Looking forward to seeing the main cast finally introduced next week.

Also, whats up with this shitty 6.99 score?

Well, they didn't hold back on the blood and gore. Definitely an anime not for weak and squeamish. Even with the censors, it was still pretty nasty. Wondering how much they will reveal in the disc release.

This episode revealed that Takamura is the only character we should be concerned about. However, all we receive is indirect characterization about Takamura. What Takamura is not is:

1) The girl who flies too high after getting high on her first kill.
2) The girl who runs out of ammo and closes her eyes as a BETA approaches, only to be saved by Takamura.
3) The girl who starts bragging about surviving for eight minutes, only to get broken the very next second.
4) The stubborn men (first we have seen pilot the mecha) who try to be valiant in a hopeless cause or turn clueless without a captain.
5) Definitely not the annoying girl who wants revenge for boyfriend and freaks out after every small threat.
6) Most importantly, not the cool-headed girl who asks for Takamura to take over after the fall of their commander and asks Takamura to shoot her before being eaten by the BETA.

Maybe I am giving the episode too much credit, but the only meaningful direct characterization of Takamura is the hospital scene, when she starts crying at the sight of a baby crying.

So what have I learned about our main character, Takamura? Her actions are very mechanical, like those of a solider's, except when she has to kill the cool-headed girl. Soldiers, not out of disrespect, are usually boring characters, but its seems Takamura has experienced an epiphany concerning death, changing her characterization as the perfect soldier to, hopefully, something more human in the upcoming episodes.

Now, was this the best way to characterize Takamura? Because this series has to concern itself with world-building and mecha scenes (like E7 AO), I wouldn't harass this series for taking it slow with its characters, and even its plot (unless it turns out to be a 12 episode series, cutting everything short). So far, not bad, but also not amazing. Therefore, this series has its work cut out if it decides to take advantage of its premise. I'm most fascinated with the concept of BETA eating humans.

Well they definitely got the horror/PTSD stuff in here, which is a good sign that this is going to be serious like the Alternative proper and not straight-up fanservice for the duration. The only thing I'm curious about is where the story will actually go from here since I have no clue what happens in the Total Eclipse side of things.

Also, seeing animated BETA finally made me super happy.

This show turned out to be better than I first expected. There are mechas, and there's blood and there are these girls..
I knew that all of them will die in the end, except for Yui, not because she's the main heroine, but because she was a lot more responsible and serious than the rest of them.
I also knew that Yui will be saved in the last moment by someone. Though I expected to see the pilot of that blue mecha.

Definitely better than the first episode.

I haven't played any of the VNs for Muv Luv, but I feel that they could have just done this backstory in an OVA and instead could have just started in the present.

Much better than the first one.
And 3 years later people should be a bit more perceptive to the fact that they are all going to die.
It's good that all the annoying characters died too. Now I only hope the actual main cast is good.

Very promising, ep 1 was a good start (with the calm-before-storm at training school setting, I took it as a hint that shit would hit the fan sooner rather than later and was glad to end up correctly) and ep 2 nicely concluded this introduction. 5/5 for this one.

As to whom will hate/love it, it's quite simple. Don't like action/mech/gore/seinen: don't even bother. Out of those I'm personally not a fan of mecha but ended up enjoying those scenes quite well (probably due to the BETAs and inside interior of the mech's more than any other aspects), so non-targeted audiences should still see this anime doing a good job. Could be a good title to experiment with a new genre.
Muv-Luv had been on my to-read VNs list for too long, I might finally bother thanks to the anime.

Edit: thinking back to it, biggest dissatisfaction with this would be how they spoil too much themselves, ex: >glasses girl suddenly mentioning how BETA eat people, no way you can't see where this is going. I'd have enjoyed seeing it out of nowhere a lot more. Only times knowing in advance what will happen to concerned person is when it's a psychopath tells said person how he'll torture him/her, it really is the only case.
For that eating part, I guess the studio might have felt forced to do so in case public companies try to sue them for showing more gruesome things than a girl-running-late-for-school-with-a-toast-in-her-mouth (on that note: hopefully blu-rays won't be so dark/blacked out); they can just say 'said-character hints it well enough, don't blame us! It should have been evident to skip the next scene'.

Loved it. I thought the first ep was already great (watched it again), but the second one was even better.
Great introduction-arc, nice way to learn about Yui´s past and personality at the beginning.
And man does she look hot with long hair. All those girls that died were just "minor" characters, they were only important to show why Yui is the person who she will be in the upcoming episodes.

Did I already mention that she looks hot?
