THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Well, the battle begins and Marika is able to set it up so that the pirates work like a fleet of space ships. The fact that Quartz has three ships (two controlled by her main one) doesn't even phase them as they take them out relatively quickly. Marika boards the Grand Cross and tells Quartz that even though the pirates do take on shows and seem to have lost their pirate side that she doesn't care. Marika is a pirate because that is who she is. Quartz escapes and the Grand Cross self-destructs. We get some scenes of Princess Serenity in a pirate outfit, but the girls from school didn't make it for the battle. We end with Marika passing her exams.

Overall, I liked the series. I hope the movie continues the story nicely.

Time for some piracy!

Well, I can't say that this will be the smash hit of the season but it was enjoyable, at least in the entertainment department. Anyways, looking forward to the movie coming soon or a S2 if that ever debuts in the future.

yes this was best anime so far in both Winter and Spring (second place goes to SpaceBros - but those are very similar) - but that was to expect from this director, as well as it's slow tempo
design of universe, way that characters actually think and react in smart way plus all those details
not to mention great characters - Ai takes first place, than Marika and Chiaki later

I can't wait for the movie and than some second season :)

Stellvia was also good series, I liked it's setting more but less moments when Shipon was going angsty.

A bit cheesy, But overall decent end to a pretty good series.

I can't understand why i liked the series as much as i did. There was a lot wrong with the plot and nonsensical story overall.

But, it was an Adventure story. And at least it was intelligent about technical aspects what battles might be like in space. Most of the characters had a certain charm to them. While the story did drag a bit in places, at least there was a decent pace to it when the action started.

Overall it was enjoyable series to watch. a good goofy show. Would enjoy seeing a second season with expanded adventures and another battle with Quartz Christie.

I give the show a bumped up 8/10 from 7.5.

Such a great show~

Loved every episode and never once was bored, or even dreading seeing the next episode. The pacing was perfect, and the plot was amazing ~

People just have a hard time getting this is a political anime, not an action anime. There are definitely action sequences to be had, but it was strongly about the politics of piracy in a legal sense.

I am excited for the movie, but honestly, I wouldn't have minded if the movie hadn't of happened. Here's hoping for a third season ~

9/10. So glad I picked this up, especially when I had only started watching airing anime in the spring. Saw this had started in the Winter and had like 14 episodes at the time, so I jumped in. Great decision. Love the characters, especially Chiaki-chan, and the battles were cool too. Yeah, there could have been more of a cohesive story - as it is, there were basically alternating arcs of friendship time and battle time. I thought it worked well though - always looked forward to each episode. Good time.

I love shows that start slow but keep getting more and more enjoyable towards the end compared to ones that do the opposite. Spent a lot of time wondering whether something was actually going to happen especially for a show about space pirates but my patience was rewarded during the second half.

Nice music, animation, setting and fun characters. Stronger second half pushes it from a 7 to an 8/10.

The final episodes bumped this back up to a 7 for me as the series returned to its strengths. I found the romance arc and the dinghy race to be pretty boring, but the fight against Quartz redeemed the show somewhat. I would have liked to have gotten a bit more character development in 26 episodes to go with the gradually unfolding story of intersteller politics and galactic upheaval. So even though I would like to find out just why the greater galaxy needs this pirate fleet to emerge, I'm still not terribly excited about seeing any more of the high school yacht club. Frankly I'd rather find more out about her mother and father's relationship and history, as well as the crew of the Bentenmaru.

Great anime, I really enjoyed it. The grand finale felt badass. Speaking about badass... coorie's uber1337 typing skillZ were WIN.

The fight was really intense, and captain marika's plan worked perfectly ofc.

Only downside of the episode: Showing us the Yacht club in their outfits.... NOW I WANNA SEE MOAR OF THEM!

alltogether: 9/10 for the anime and 5/5 for the episode.

This show has been a mixed bag. I expected something completely different to what I got but once I adjusted my expectations, there's enjoyment to be had here.

It's very hard to recommend it from the first couple episodes alone. I think ep.3 was largely the most boring of the lot with a focus on electronic warfare. The latter half was much better than the first 13 eps. In the end, it's worth it for the ending. Bit of a shame that 'Lost Child' didn't play at the end but the two tracks at the end were beautiful and the combat sequences were fluid and intense. The characters were mostly unmemorable except for Marika who instantly shot up to my favourites from the debut.

From the loose ends, I hope there will be more of Marika to come. Very glad I stuck with it to the end. 6/10.

It started really slow with a few good eps in the middle and finally started picking up towards the very end with the big space battle finale. Sadly that was not enough to save the series from being anything more than average, overall 4/10. Hopefully the movie will be better than the series.

Very exciting last episode! Thanks to Coorie, everyone could predict where the enemy ships will strike.Didn't know she could type with her toes XD And the short fight after the boarding on one of them was pretty interesting too. Even in their time they have ninjas with strange techniques, like that pirate ninja demonstrated some. I also see Shnitzer in the background smashing down androids.

So Ironbeard was, like we thought, Marika's father and Gruer had probably known all along.

I give this last battle a 10/10 though for the whole series maybe 9/10

I loved the battle against Grand Cross, a great way to finish the season. It was unexpected but this series turned out to be highly enjoyable and fun experience, i'm looking forward to the movie, hopefully it'll be a sequeal and we get to Marika's family issues. That would be great especially now that Ironbeard was officially confirmed for Marika's father.

An amazing final episode to my favourite series of this year yet. Feeling real sad to see this end. I'm gonna miss my weekly dose of Captain Kato Marika and the crew of the Bentenmaru. And of course Chiaki-chan going all dere dere for Marika. But I guess there is the movie, which is probably years away from release.

So the not-so-shocking secret that Ironbeard is Kato Gonzaemon has finally been revealed, and it looks like everyone except Marika knows her father's still alive. The fact that even Gruier is aware that Gonzaemon's still alive and kicking gives an added dimension to why she chose Marika and the Bentenmaru for her quest in finding the golden ghost ship. And Chiaki-chan is finally following what her heart says by moving back to Hakuoh Academy to be closer to her beloved Captain Marika. Too bad for Gruier though, but I guess Hildegarde will be happier she gets to spend more time with her onee-sama :-D

i don't particularly like the "being in a group is better than being alone" type of shit. clearly that fight was far too easy. considering the firepower of those ships, its likely they were sacrificial lambs to see how they do in real combat. since currently there is no force that can fight seriously other than pirates, they were used to test the capability of those ships.

still though, the technologies being used are far too different. perhaps there is an "alien" threat that they simply didn't even allude to. otherwise why have such an overwhelmingly powerful ship when the galaxy is largely peaceful, that the only "combat" people ever see is fake piracy by some high school chick. either that or a secret organization that wants to take over the world sort of thing.

An anime I started expecting to drop, but instead I watched it through and loved it!

The first two reviews say it all for me. (artist-retired and cafekun)

9/10

EDIT: Rewatched. I still love it, but I realize the last two arcs were more action-focused rather than sci-fi. I was wondering why and turns out the Nebula Cup arc and onward were anime-only. And apparently the LN is much less moe and more sci-fi based as well, despite its flashy name. The author is an award-winner, a prominent sci-fi writer.

Which means Marika's father, Kane's twin, and a few other important plot elements aren't actually true. And I was also really curious why the last arc has some zigzagging battleship, now I know why. :L

I wish I could give the LN a try. While I liked the anime, I think the well done sci-fi elements really added that spark (and although it was only a bit, there was more fanservice in the latter half). I love the characters though, the setting, the idea of space pirates, and how this series was executed.

It is obvious that this wasn't a series that would appeal to everyone, since many people seem to have some pretty serious hate for it, but I loved it. It is good, old-fashioned Science Fiction/space opera with a nice firm grasp of the science end in most of the show and some of the best characters to come around in a long time! Marika, Chiaki, and the crew of the Bentenmaru are all fantastic characters! (Chiaki especially! I loved the way she called Marika up to let her know that she believes in her right before the battle! The tsundere showing her dere side! So CUTE!)

I am hyped about the movie! The director also indicated that there may be more after that, or the translation of what he said was a bit misleading. At his panel at Anime Expo he said the following:

Q: Welcome to the states, Sato-san! For the end of episode 25 of Bodacious Space Pirates, I did enjoy the cliffhanger, but I would like to know - is the show gonna have a second season, or maybe an OVA series?

Sato: If you watch the last episode, you will find out."

Q: Will there be other media - like novels - to further explore the universe of Bodacious Space Pirates?

Sato: "Again, watch the last episode. But the main story WILL end in some format. Then after that, you will have a surprise."

If there is a surprise after the main story ends in movie format, that would suggest that they are going to do more of the books in anime at some point, right? (Episodes 19-26 were anime original stories by Sato-sensei, according to him.)

The ending was pretty nice but seemed a bit like a open ending and let's hope it is one.

As for Chiaki joining Marika's crew that sounds very nice but isn't she the next in line to be captain of her fathers vessel?

In an earlier episode when Gruier (?) was researching the (then) mysterious ship, she did say the Empire was hurriedly building these things. That strongly implies they are scared of something, and it obviously wasn't the pirates.

(shrug) you get what you want out of a show. It obviously wasn't meant to be taken to seriously. Once I changed my expectations I ended up enjoying it.

The most that impressed this episode was certainly the fight of Grand Cross and to top it off 3 of them? WTF? That was insane. Anyway short on time my thoughts follow.

I will miss a lot Kachua Viracocha in the following,

She was really sexy and nice.
Hot redhead to say the least.

Ninja Pirate in the spoiler
was mainly cool for just that. A shield a a la Ninja style to deflect beams. Quite amazing TBH.

About thee end of the episode, certainly many have spoken of Marika’s father in fact being alive and quite well in the following,

well most probably never or might not figure out why or of Marika’s circumstances. I can tell. It’s obvious that Marika’s father bailed out of the Bentenmarru for real personal reasons in being promoted by the Galactic Empire. Moreover Quartz the way she put her make up and on makes me think she had a pretty bad life to hide her natural face. Many time woman do exactly that, hence I have high suspicions of a shitty childhood on Quartz’s part along with Marika’s father not having any choice to hide himself from her.

About theory, most might ask why all this assumption and all. Well there is no real reason but fun, however LOGIC! It’s obvious something is up between Marika’s father/Galactic Empire/Queen. If he is ordered by the Queen and is recognized out of the blue by the Empire to serve them, something must be up. Why and for what reasons is what OVER 9000 is going to happen and make it to this level for the movie. I expect the movie to be minimal talk and action like the fight with Grand Cross.

On that note strong 9/10 from me. S2 is coming up and I feel it! Chiaki will be more with Marika in 3rd year of schooling and they should show Marika graduate in S2. From there on a S3 may be done with a more mature Marika. Already that S2 would have a form of her.

BTW Image Stitches done in the spoiler
some last ones of Grand Cross.

PS: Only thing I am disappointed is at myself for not having enough time to make GIFs and Image Stitches of this series along with posting on the episode discussions. Life’s a bitch and then you die would sounds about right. Moreover I had so much shit to do that a marathon of 7 episodes was fuck all possible. Next I should try and keep up with series. Well at least I am done with this one.

That's possible. Quartz's outfit and makeup may simply be current court fashion - royal courts were often, if not always, centers of fads. On the other hand her suit is functional as well and possibly she applies something over her exposed skin to work with the suit. Maybe a little of both. Frequently both men and women of royalty might wear anything from something almost impossible to walk around in to almost minimalistic militarily utilitarian in nature and call it fashion, so I'd be reluctant to read to much into her outfit.

The mask Marika's father, "Ironbeard", wears, however, immediately invokes some consideration. I've been assuming since he faked his death it was that alone that prompts him to wear a mask, whatever the reason being for faking his death. It didn't occur to me that there might be some connection between him and the queen or Quarts that he is trying to hide from, but I admit the possibility is real given we already know he was known on a personal level to some members of the royal family.

I'd be somewhat disappointed if the promised movie focuses mostly on action. One of the things I've enjoyed about this show is the world building and hints, some subtle and some not so subtle, about the political situations between the frontier governments and the Empire. I'd like some expansion on that if the show shifts focus towards relations with the Empire directly.

Regardless her suit certainly itself can be a form of flashyness or nano imbuded but of that I am not sure. Certainly the sparkles were not for show but had more functionality we did not see. I have some doubts on this.

It's not just the outfit but her dress up with her make up that preoccupies me the most. For example most captains did not have marks or make up that much from that comparing I can deduct Quartz has a lot to hide of her past, which suggests once again IT BEING SHITTY. Basically.

Indeed and it perhaps holds some regret. Moreover what may even be more alarming that he may have died and got revived with a mass make over of his face and head. That alone could prove why he would hold it together with a mask as to it not fall apart.

It didn't occur to me that there might be some connection between him and the queen or Quarts that he is trying to hide from, but I admit the possibility is real given we already know he was known on a personal level to some members of the royal family.
I even went further and I think the Emperor and Queen might not be OK with each other. While the Emperor feels nothing as having a Prototype test on live pirates that are of small value to him the Queen has a opposite view of it being UNFAIR and thus sends Iron beard after Quartz to stop her.

I'd be somewhat disappointed if the promised movie focuses mostly on action. One of the things I've enjoyed about this show is the world building and hints, some subtle and some not so subtle, about the political situations between the frontier governments and the Empire.
I would not like it too much if the focus is only that. I would prefer to have some of that with mostly action. During the action PLOT was possible still. Might not be historical but at least it's possible to integrate it.

I'd like some expansion on that if the show shifts focus towards relations with the Empire directly.
That can be developed with action massing and plot integration provided it's done well.

That could be a problem however with a movie it might be more relaxed less the movie has time limit. I think they can use a full 2hr and 30 minutes.
