Fuck Yaoi. Fuck yeah Yuri.

Well to be honest they both aren't that great. I tolerate some shounen-ai and shoujo-ai but yaoi and yuri is a bit too much for me.

I'm a 20-year-old girl.

And by "definition" I should have hots for yaoi, but I don't.Yet real gay porn arouse me.
So I think I prefer yuri, though still, it isn't high on my list of favourite genre.

Yaoi is ... just not for me. Nothing against gay men, I;m just not interesting in seeing them make out or anything.
Yuri, I don't mind it. I'm in favour of it. Shoujo-ai is also nice once in a while and it opens my heart up a bit.

To people who've said they like either Yaoi or Yuri or they're not sure why or haven't given a lot of specifics, how much do you think your own sexual orientation comes into play?

I, for one, can't watch Yaoi because I'm straight, and I'm not open-minded enough to enjoy it, I guess. I have nothing against it, or think it's a bad genre, or say that it there isn't any good satisfying romance anime - and I'm sure there are a lot of them - but the fact remains that I'm straight so I'm just finding myself not interested in it at all, and can't get over the fact that I'm watching a romance where there isn't a girl involved - it's just way too unrelatable to me. I can't picture a romance, or dwell on any romantic feelings and emotions, and not have a girl be a part of them.

I would've figured that the sexual orientation would be the biggest factor in a person's enjoyment of Yaoi or Yuri or willingness to watch them, but I've been surprised reading some of the posts in the thread.

Short answer: They're both hot.

Long answer: I prefer yaoi, but I also enjoy yuri. I find same sex relations and interaction exciting and therefore, if I didn't and simply chose one or the other, I'd be a jackass moral myopiac.

If we're talking about hentai I don't watch any, but if we mean Shounen/Shoujo-ai then I prefer Shoujo-ai.

Shounen-ai is okay, but it tends to be really dark and angsty which I don't like as much. Opposite this Shoujo-ai tends to be very cute and fluffy which I love.

That and they usually don't peg my sexual taste in men in Shounen-ai, whereas I have a broader palette of women I find attractive. Though I don't watch either out of sexual motivation.

Though I like Yaoi more.

I am not a fan Yaoi but I am an extreme huge fan of Yuri.

I think that girl on girl is cute/hot and it makes me feel happy inside, but unfortunately the isn't an anime with focus on yuri that piqued my interest. That's why I like Strike Witches and Madoka Magica for the yuri undertones.

I 've seen some yaoi OVA's because it makes me laugh more than your usual comedy, I haven't seen any anime with yuri aspect though. I'm not a big fan of any romance anime, so any romance is kind of turn off for me, since I prefer other genres... whether the main couple is a pair of homosexuals or heterosexuals doesn't really matter to me.
The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything.

I'm a straight girl and don't mind either way. I'm more of a yaoi / shounen ai fan though and it's not like I've even read / watched many yuri / shoujo ai manga / anime (actually only 2 manga at the moment) but I'm just slowly getting into these genres.

Guess I started watching yaoi because it was something different. I was so tired of normal romance where the girl always had to be saved by the boy and couldn't do anything on her own. In many yaoi stories the couple consists of to independent persons who can do fine on their own, and I guess I kinda liked that better..

Hmmm... I may be weird...
To me, yaoi and yuri are both fine. But I'd really love to break the rules and bring a yaoi guy to a yuri girl and watch'em become friends and fall in love.
The fact that a Lesbian can only love a girl and a Gay can only love a boy makes Les and Gay falling in love with each other impossible... But I like impossible twists

I really wish there was more shounen-ai compared to shoujo-ai because I'm sick of seeing all these rapey yaoi adaptations with bad plot. I want more innocent love stories.

which is why im really excited for takako shimura's next manga which is BL

Every single series on the planet should have yuri, or subtext at the very least. Yaoi is cool too. Would like to see more yaoi couples/subtext integrated into non-yaoi series. Yuri seems to beat yaoi on this. Now, as for yuri, we need more full blown yuri series without a doubt.

I'm a straight male, but strangely i'm more attracted to yaoi manga (particularly the josei ones). The intimacy and care in some of the yaoi manga I've read is really moving, and it explores much more intricately how the differences in relationships can be a blessing and a curse at times. They also seem to go a little more deeply into exploring the sexual side of relationships, not just the emotional. The likes of Ten Count, Finder no Hyouteki, and Caste Heaven in particular are pretty engaging and occasionally heart-wrenching.

Oh, and for anyone who is going to preach about the superiority of yuri in terms of depth of quiet, subtle emotion should go read Kinou Nani Tabeta right now.

Yuri the besto, nothing will ever compare to the love and life that is Yuri. That said, I do have single target sexuality for the following and would allow them to take me as only a seasoned butt pirate could:

•Cu Chulainn
•Zafira
•Cu Chulainn

Not necessarily. Shows/manga can be explicit without being pornographic.
I've given yaoi multiple chances in the past because of curiosity, but it's really not my thing. Yuri on the other hand I love, although I haven't watched a yuri show yet (and possibly never will since none of them really interest me).

Dynasty-Scans has a lot. Not all of it is good, but it's a decently-sized database.

[size=80]I'm 19, a girl, and really only interested in yaoi- purely because I cannot stand female characters- especially those who tend to flaunt themselves for the fans >_> I will admit, I have been intreguied to watch a couple of yuri shows, but only to see what they're like and how it's done, but I've never got round to it, or had the stomach to go through with it xD I don't particularly have a problem with yuri, or people who watch it, I just feel that all the girls in the show will be exactly the same as the ones in ecchi and harem shows.

Now yaoi is a defo for me, although I do prefer manga versions because they tend to be a little more graphic and longer than their anime adaptions.

I've personally read more yaoi but they aren't as good. Hanagumi Ninkyouden was really good but other than that I haven't read anything special (yeah I'll give Seven Days and Ten Count a chance eventually). I've read less yuri/shoujo-ai but I enjoy them more. Girl Friends, Tetragrammaton Labyrinth, and Strawberry Panic! (The original light novel, not the anime) all got high scores from me. Haven't seen any yuri (except for scenes in a hentai I was watching) and I tried watching Junjou Romantica about 3-4 years ago, barely got through episode 1, last year watched episode two and haven't touched it since. No. 6 was a really good show though.

Agreed. No.6 doesn't get enough love. That is the kind of yaoi/yaoi-subtext that should be more commonplace in anime. Yuri has so many more subtexty shows. Though, I'm not complaining as yuri is my jam. :)

Well, we do need more full blown yuri and yaoi series of quality, for sure. I don't think subtext is bad though. For a series that the focus isn't on romance or romantic relationships, subtext is great.

Well to be fair, No. 6 technically is shounen-ai, they do go all the way (as in the actually kiss, not 'all the way' as in THAT way) and in Madoka Magica Rebellion MadoHomu is basically canon.

Yeah, I don't use those nonsense terms (shounen-ai, shoujo-ai). Yuri = girl on girl relations, Yaoi = guy on guy relations as far as I'm concerned. Besides, I don't even think Japan uses them. Pretty sure they just use Yuri, Yaoi, and BL (could be wrong).
