The second longest of all anime (on this site with a definite number of episodes), second only to famous Doraemon, 18 years of airing time, quite an interesting topic and yet aparently the most unknown anime I ever saw on this site.
An amazing number of 2(!) people have this set as "watching", a total of only 110 people has listed this anime at all.

Are the people deterred because it is so long and old?
And: Are there even pages offering nearly 1500 episodes of an anime nobody seems to watch?

Well it should be number 1 because compared to the length of time, this one is about 20 minutes per episode while Doraemon is 10 minutes per episode.

This anime is a classic that I grew up watching in Japan. Over there the title Manga Nihon Mukashibanashi is ubiquitous above a certain age, at least in the sense that everyone remembers it. I believe the OP was the same throughout the whole length of the show and it is still stuck in my head! There is a gap for sure when it comes to anime, the anime that the west has come to appreciate does not include something like this. It is too culturally specific to Japan.

To give you an idea how famous this anime series was and to an extent still is, here is the youtube link to the OP of that series. Over 1.2 million views for the OP of an anime that ended in 1995!

Raws/DVD's exist and and lots of episodes are on youtube. It's far from dead.

I guess the modern day equivalent is 'Folktales from Japan' that airs each week with over 200 episodes as of now.
