I think that an anime freak can be qualified as so by the amount of time spent not only watchign anime but also thinking about it, reading about it and speaking about it. And if you end up at the end of the day shouting for the magic cloud instead of picking the bus back home.. well it's another barrier broken..

QTF

even tho i've only seen a little over 250 series, most of my life revolves around anime
when i sing, it's only anime songs
when i draw, it's anime characters
when i act, it's to voice over anime characters
when i dance, it's to hare hare yukai or sailor fuku
when i design, it's usually digital graphics themed by anime
when i listen to music, it's only anime songs
when i watch TV, i go to my anime channel
when i go shopping, i usually go to my anime store first
and i've probably spent 80% of my money on anime goods
when i'm surrounded by anime goods, or when i'm at an anime shop, i feel like i'm in true paradise. i can't stop smiling when i imagine such a place
i only make friends with people who watch anime
my best friends are the ones who watch just as much anime as me
in fact, when i date someone and they don't watch anime it's an automatic turn off.
i wish i lived in japan, and i wish i knew how to speak japanese
when i have free time, i watch anime
if i'm not watching anime, i'm surely thinking about what anime to watch
or i'm doing something anime related like the ones already listed above

i'm working on watching anime everyday... watching 100-200 series a month is nothing really. That's about how much series i watch in a week. 20 series is nothing, because i watch at least 30 on going series at a time, plus 20 that are not on going.

This is an example of an anime freak.

THAT is what i'm talking about :)
What matters is the dedication to what revolves around Anime rather than just watching Anime itself.

After your first completed anime you're definitely considered a freak-in-the-making.

Time's winged chariot hurrying near,
And yonder all before us lie,
Deserts of vast eternity."

Well, I guess you could say 100+ titles. I might qualify. It also might take 5 episodes a day of anime or something. I don't know. I follow my own standards lol.
The most epiosdes I've watched of an anime is 16 episodes. And that was when I was addicted to Detective Conan.

Very little, the real snobs in a genre usually like very little of it. It are the newbies who will like everything.

Fixed. ^_^

Anyway. Some other people already hit it on the head. Its not all about how many series you watch, and really its mostly an opinion thing (though if you're answering something like 1-50, your opinion sucks :D).

Anyway. You're an anime freak depending on how much time you spend on anime. Talking about it. Watching it. Thinking about it. Also depends on how much money you've spent on not just it, but on random related shit like posters and figurines (and sheets and pillows, lmao).

Its not really something you get to bestow upon yourself either. Like you watched 30 series and want to call yourself an anime freak...meh. You're a fan, sure. But a freak? I don't think so. Its something other anime fans (not regular people, 'cause they'd use it as an insult) call you after being utterly blown away by your devotion to the stuff.

I'd say being an "anime freak" is more about attitude than capacity.

I'd say:
Otaku 100 days
Anime freak 365 days

Haven't reached the otaku stage yet :D

I don't know if this qualifies, but I clear about 430 episodes a month, I've watched somewhere beyond 300+ titles and the most I've watched in 1 day is about 30 episodes, but I like to keep it around 26 max. Many nights I'll watch a 13 episode show in the evening that's about 5 to 6 hours. I think about anime just about nonstop: what I am going to buy next, what new titles are in the pipeline to come out next, what I am going to watch that week, who is going to be cast in the dub of [insert title here] anime, is it going to have a dub, etc. All I seem to be capable to talking about with my family is anime (which annoys them to no end). My spending on DVDs are related collectibles is upwards of $500. If am listing to music it's ususally an anime OST, in fact as I write this I'm listening to Gun X Sword OST 2 (which is really good by the way). So basically, I eat, sleep, work, and watch anime, my life is pretty straightforward. Does that qualify me for the title of anime freak or should I stick with Zealot.

Seeing as I have school most of the time atm i can fit in about 20 eps a day, but I'm leaving school in a few weeks, so my free time will skyrocket, meaning "more anime for me".

But I have watched around 50 anime now but I watch shows religiously, one after the other not realizing the time till about 2 in the morning then having to go to bed before school the next day when I wake up at 6!

Typical School Day
6.00am Wake up
6.10 Prepare for school
7.00 Watch anime
7.50 School
3.00pm Arrive Home
3.10 Watch Anime
4.00 Walk Dog
4.45 Get Cup of tea and biccy's (maybe pocky)
5.00 Anime (again)
2.00am Go to bed

And rinse and repeat. :p

Richness, not my thing, but I'm more of a dedication person than splasher outer, cause I hardly get money anyway, but if I have enough it goes to con money and anime stuff. For example, I won £150 (i live across the pond you see), and spent every bit of it on the Haruhi dub DVD's to be shipped to UK, and 5 cosplay outfits from Hong Kong.

My PC is loaded full of anime stuff, 90% of My Music folder is J-Pop, J-Rock, Visual-kei or Character Albums. I change anime wallpapers every week, and I've even plastered my PC with stickers of various characters.

My room is about to be redecorated, but I will be plastering it with posters. When I walk into somewhere and see even just a manga character hiding a smile goes straight onto my face and I will keep smiling till I'm a 2 mile distance away from it. Oh yes and did I mention I watched said 50 anime earlier in JUST over a year that I have become such a maniac.

OK, so you hear my life and I think to be fair for being newbie but dedicated, I could fit into the anime freak stereotype, I'd prefer someones opinion though...

P.S. I'd like to check, for a skint 16 year old from the UK (Where anime never comes), is this enough?

EDIT>
Most I have watched in one go was I rewatched all of Fullmetal Alchemist - 51 eps and movie, with only 2 breaks for toilet, even watched it when getting my food. that is 25 and a half hours, I slept through the next day.

And most amount of dedication to an anime from me: During a week I managed to watch about 120 episodes of Bleach. And fully watch Haruhi after I got up to date.

WOW! AdamtheNinja I bow to your superior watching abiltiy, to watch FMA straight through 1 to 51 + the movie is a real feat IMO, even if I had the time to watch straight through a whole day I don't think I could. I am in awe, even if you've only seen 50 in total your dedication makes you an anime freak in my book, it's not always quantity that makes a fanatic, sometimes it just helps to be crazy.

I may not be able to watch as many as others have but when i specifically watch an anime i watch it non-stop; i can go straight through because you get dedicated as someone else said. I really dont think it's the amount you watch that makes you an otaku/anime freak; in general many will say yes but more of the enjoyment you get from specific series.

The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make heaven of Hell, and a hell of Heaven.

Seriously, I'm wondering if any of the symptoms people have posted are healthy or not. Avocations are one thing, commodity fetishes are another.

wow, recently, now that i think about it, i havent been watching much... maybe its a time issue, cuz im only able to cover about 40 episodes a week... but then, i think i actually dont fall under "otaku", since i lack all the wall scrolls and such... my room is filled with gaming posters, my bookshelf lined with programming and computer science books and gaming magazines, and having four computers in my room. The only physical manefestation of anime i possess... is my 500GB external hd dedicated to anime and manga...

most in a day for me was around 40

How is that even possible? Unless, each episode is 5-10 minutes..

I only managed 17 in a day, my new record which is less than half the number of episodes you watched.
