THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
If there is one thing to say of this episode it's the following,

Along with the spoiler
Urabe blushing? HNNNNNNNNNNNGHHHHHHHHHTTTTT *dies* *is back* Yeah that was heart attacking of MOE it's insane.

Other than that I find Oka was being quite slutty this episode. I would say that she can do many guys and Yuri easily from her reactions in this episode towards Akira in the spoiler
O mean I detect some rather tempting breasts charming along with smelling? WTF Oka? Still not minding it even though she has a BF to being perverted and erotic with Urabe while tasting her drool in the spoiler
Oka proves her slutty sides in this episode quite well.

I cannot be surprised anymore after this episode that Oka is one sexual beast and her BF needs a better control over her. That's IMO of Oka from this episode as impression it gives of her. Might edit later.

About short comments, Urabe’s torture in the spoiler
beholds scary all around.

Akira’s ex is back and her designs in the spoiler
suggest that she was rather well done. Face and body wise. However I am seeing major shit due to her for Urabe x Akira. I did read the manga but I still find her a wrecking girl. Therefore I am looking forward to her GTFO fast of the show TBH. Get her part done because I don’t like THE BITCH TBH! She is the most dangerous factor between Urabe and Akira. Did you see him cry? Did you see Urabe being down? MY POINTS! Exactly!

Despite that I will add the following,

With the spoiler
MOE REVOLUTION TO ARMS! Indeed the MOE + the drool make their appearance once again. Sweeping the viewer that it can mutate itself with anything. MOE proves once again it can mix up a lot in different genres. Urabe is no exception and Nazo x Kanojo proves itself again in that field with this episode. That scene gave another heart MOE attack more than the first one.

I find Urabe’s ear in the spoiler
to be well done art wise.

I got some good ROFL from the spoiler
those cans!

Now if that Bitch can please GTFO as soon as her arc is done, I would be happy however character development is important and IMO Akira should be stronger after this arc IMO.

BTW Intermission in the spoiler
is hot! Urabe licking like that!

Accidentally meeting Ueno's girlfriend, who wants to hang out with him.

Nicknames... not only to the guy, but also to his girlfriend... She really is interested in both of them.

He woke her up by calling her first name, and the smile from her made him dreamt of taking photos of her.

He wants to take photo of her smiling, but she refused.

Then meeting his first love... he was able to refuse her offer to drink, but girlfriend got mad. To his "if" question to the offer, she showed the answer by her drill and he cried.

lol @ the photo he got. She is happy that he will treasure that weird photo of her.

Summer sickness next ep.?

Male protagonist meeting his first crush again...flag raised. It never fails. Something is going to happen between Akira and Aika.

I will agree, Mikoto was full of moeness this episode.

Well, hope your boyfriend isn't mad about this, hanging out with another guy:

Dat mysterious blush:

Blast from the past:

I can see where this is going now. Inb4 catfights, misunderstandings, and jealously. Looks like Urabe is pretty serious about her relationship with Akira now though. Can't to see what's next (:

Ah, this episode reminded me - just when is this story supposed to be set - the eighties? I don't think that you could find film for an instant camera any more even if you knew what to do with it.

And the other thing that this episode reminded me about - Urabe is horrifically repressed - if only the author would give us some rationale behind it.

I think they stopped making the film about five years ago. It's possible that if you had some in a freezer it would still be stable enough to use. The physical photos do look a little anachronistic. I can't recall, have any of them used a cell phone? That would be a give away as to the time setting.

The time setting is either the 80s or 90s. One thing for sure computers are not really around nor is media around them.

Good episode, first name is serious business!

Oka was kinda slutty this episode but in a good way for me,she really tease Tsubaki between that icecream and the first name....also she taking Urabe spit like that...SHE IS GREAT!!

Urabe blushing about Tsubaki calling her for her first name was soooo cute!! specially when he call her to wake up...that face!!!

Tsubaki meeting her first love AAAAAAAAAAAAAA....and reject her BOOOOOOOOOOOO but for Urabe YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I really think for a moment Urabe was going to appear of nowere and cut her or something but she react more normal that i though...with her being sad T_T

The photo Tsubaki took from Urabe most say was great!! That photo says how Urabe is....in a way.

Next episode seems will get Urabe sick...lets see how it goes!!

Good thing Tsubaki ended up turning her down with Urabe listening and all; also she was totally faking her sleep :P; seems like she wants to be called her first name even tho i can't picture her calling him by his XD; nice to see that he replaced the old photos with hers, tho i get the feeling we will see that girl again eventually.

Oka is one powerful woman influencing both relationships. She, more or less, can choose to decide the pace at which Tsubaki and Urabe's relationship progresses, while keeping Ueno under her grip. Scary woman. I am more curious how she hides her darker side from Ueno all this time or does Ueno know and accept her as she is.

More importantly, I am having trouble understanding why I enjoy this anime. Each episode is self-contained and the entirety of 22 minutes during this episode is spent on only two things: a discussion of first names and Urabe's smile. The fact the anime makes a big deal about trivial things should start to becoming annoying after a while, but I find it more and more refreshing.
Maybe it's not such about making a big deal as opposed to clarifying every action Urabe or Tsubaki takes. One can clearly trace back the steps that led one action to another. There are no shortcuts; we are shown how a genuine relationship was developed. Nothing is left to chance. In the end, however, when all is said and done, Tsubaki and Urabe's relationship won't have the depth of Tomoya and Nagisa's or the drama of those in Honey and Clover. But that is because this will be only a 13-episode anime and refuses to delve into the characters' past to stir up conflicts. The anime focuses on the present actions of Tsubaki and Urabe and it does that wonderfully.

As an example, Tsubaki's confession to Urabe was not only cute, but also genuine. His confession and everything that led up to it clearly shows that their love isn't just something touchy-feely, but also based on communication and reciprocity. No melodrama or sentiments, just a genuine relationship--one that even adults can envy. This anime doesn't emotionally affect me or entertain me with doses of comedy (requirements for many good slice-of-life anime), but appeals to me anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if this anime breaks new ground in the slice-of-life genre.

When Urabe was asleep at the park and Tsubaki was staring at her ear I thought he was going to stick his finger in it, take out some ear wax, and lick it. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened in this anime.

i LOVE urabe's smiling, it's very cute!

if the rejected girl ever comes back to fool around with tsubaki, i wouldn't be surprised if urabe used her scissors and went senjougahara on her.
in fact, i'd love to see that xDDD

but worried/jealous urabe was quite surprising. guess she REALLY cares about tsubaki

Looks like the theory I had was wrong after all.

So this week's episode was about first names and our main couple. The little conversation Oka and Tsubaki had was definitely necessary to give the episode its proper flow. From there on out everything went smoothly with Urabe blushing while imagining her boyfriend calling her by her first name (and vice versa with Tsubaki himself), Tsubaki waking up Urabe through whispering her first name into her ear, our protagonist turning down the offer of the girl he had a crush on years ago and ultimately the most touching moment in this episode- Urabe giving Tsubaki her drool and making him realize how much they *both* care about each other. Wonderful episode. 5/5

I got the same feeling - about both fact that she cares for him and that something may happen.
Especially first thing was good. As she behaved in a bit different way than usual, as I had a bit of feeling that she doesn't care (not entirely but I got that on few moments).
Overall nice episode plus once again they shown that you can show cute moments in a creepy way, while maintaining their cuteness :D

It's just weird how sharing feelings in this anime is based on tasting drool.
I always got the feeling Urabe didn't really care about Tsubaki, but this episode proved me wrong :)
Maybe the childhood crush will cause some drama later on. We'll see.

Fantastic episode! I love the way the director is adapting the manga! He has taken a great slice-of-life story that has a tendency to ignore temporal continuity, and is putting it together so there is a believable, consistent plot line running through the episodes! Fantastic!

OOOOh, it looks like Oka competition in a 2 way streak, both as being a TsubakiXOka or an UrabeXOka.

Tsubaki's ex is back.....I like her to have a kind of her and Tsubaki arc, besides Urabe is a weirdo.

great chapter, it showed many feelings these two, shift the fox appeared XD (ex-girlfriend is not because he was never declared tsubaki XD), oka is only waiting to affirm their relationship to ask them to make a trio or quartet with she and ueno XD, perverted dwarf, if neglected tsubaki, Urabe raped XD

Dat blushing Urabe was moe-killer this week.

But I kinda don't like that they so much of her eyes in anime; in manga author is much more moderate, and it works very well with Urabe's character.

It's nice to know Urabe really cares about him. She was such a troll with that photo though. It's a nice photo in it's own right anyway. xD

i hate how true this is, when you dont have a girlfriend and you are looking for one, all girls ignore you and you have bad luck, but when u finally get one, for some reason all the girls come to you after...

also, if i was tsubaki, i would leave her already. i feel bad for the guy, he cant even get a hug or a kiss in the cheek

Spice and Wolf season 2 talks about that. Something about the scent of another preditor making the prey more attractive...

Why go for a boring, average girl when you have a mysterious girlfriend who is obviously into you, just shy about physical contact? After Urabe, he would be ruined for a normal girl!

Agree 100%. Yeah, I remember when I was reading the manga, the mangaka had a note saying how he wrote this manga to kind of offset the rise of sexual stuff in Japan or something like that. So he made this, where real relationship rules are thrown out the window! It's unique and all, but I much prefer the status quo. Urabe doesn't want to kiss him, but she would cry over him? Weird. The best part of the manga is coming up, and that's Hayakawa's arc. Love it. He'd be much better off with Hayakawa anyway, Urabe is just too weird. If he really still didn't have feelings for Hayakawa, why would he be blushing like a schoolgirl when he sees her? Come on Tsubaki, don't lie, you still like her, and you totally wish you could have a drool-free relationship.

It also reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George wears a wedding ring to pick up women.

It's definitely a real phenomenon.

This was another really great episode. When I started watching this I knew I was going to enjoy the weirdness of it but I couldn't have guess that it would become the show that I just have to see as soon as it's subbed. Watching an episode of this never fails to make me smile. This is an anime that is more than just a gimmick. The emotional scenes are always very sweet, the ecchi scenes are well integrated into the episodes and the comedy is funny. The weird elements also have their place in the anime, I never get the feeling the show is being weird just for the sake of it. The drool serves it's purpose and even though I still find it a bit off putting to look at sometimes, I have to admit it's never gratuitous. The drool is always used to represent the bond and closeness between the characters. It always serves this basic purpose no matter how it's being used.

I also think Oka is being well used in her role. Basically she is Urabe's opposite and yet she's enough like Urabe to provide a window into her thinking. Urabe can't clarify her thoughts or feels and remain mysterious so whenever a window is needed into her mind the anime uses Oka to give us a little peek. I really loved seeing Urabe blush when Oka was talking about using Tsubaki's first name. Basically Oka is completely open whereas Urabe is closed but having a closed off character that is mostly pokerfaced would get kind of boring after a while. With Oka, Urabe retains her mystery while still being able to develop a bit as a character.

As I said before this show really does use it's central hook well but it also doesn't just rest on that premise. It explores lots of different facets of both young love and budding sexuality.

Anyway loved this episode and can't wait for the next.

The next well done episode, Urabe's cute faces almost killed me.

Oka seems even more of a slut than in the manga, I don't like how they highlight their lips.

Aika appeared, YEAH, I hope her part is going to be the climax.

I swear to god, even though I read it and should've known better, I expected Tsubaki to lick Urabe's ear.

Haha, me too!
He already had a taste of Urabe's drool and sweat, so no harm in eating wax right? lol

I love that flustered feeling an anime character gets when he or she calls their lover by their first name. Gotta love Japanese culture!

If guys could understand how a girl feels just by giving them our drool, then that would be great, but its never that simple...it applies the other way around too of course.

As for the episode, it was great. Urabe WAS seriously cute with all that blushing : )
I am a sucker for romance!!!!
