English and somewhat fluent in German with some Russian on to the side.

And that's it. For a guy that calls himself a linguist my repertoire is rather pitiful.

To everyone who wants to learn German: http://9gag.com/gag/3623111
I have yet to see a foreigner who mastered our articles..thousands of words with almost random articles is kind of crazy. I dont really understand it myself.
Well if you include formal languages, then there are quite some I know. But for natural languages there are only 2. Guess which.

Lol, german articles are easy. German IS easy. Currently studying it at school. Also studying french. Hate it. Oh, and I study latin and ancient greek too (of course just translating, grammar, etc.)
I speak english, dutch and croatian. In a few years I'll be a fluent german speaker too. I would like to study Cantonese and Mandarin. Maybe japanese too.
I see dead people.

So true, despite my C1 level, I used to make as many mistakes when guessing an article as I'd get right. I started doing an Anki deck with 6000 words 2 months ago, at the moment I'm 4000 in, and I can now correctly remember the article of almost any word I meet, and my guesswork's improved too. It's just one of the quirks of German that demands rote memorization or really hardcore usage, every language has at least one of those.

Cantonese (speaking only)
Hakka
Japanese (intermediate)

I can make out some Mandarin from knowing Hakka/Cantonese though.

Learnt French in school but then I realised it was a stupid language and stopped. Do not see the hype in that language.

How come your poll only includes English and Asian languages? That's stupid.

Native + English and some Japanese.

My native language Hungarian, and English at a high level. I plan on learning Japanese and/or Italian (both are ones I really like). Only when I have already learned at least one of those will I try to learn Latin. The reason is obvious, it's a dead language and I wouldn't have any use of it, so it would only be a hobby because I like it a lot.

I'm fluent at both English and French.

I'm Beginner/Intermediate for Japanese. I understand most of the spoken language, and can read the basic Kanji and Kana.

English and Swedish
Since Swedish is very similar to Danish and Norwegian, i've no problems at all in understanding the languages.
I can also understand a little of the German language. Although it was years ago since i studied it.

I wish i could speak and understand the Japanese language, but i'm afraid that won't happen. :'(

English, French, Ukrainian, and Spanish fluently. Though Ukrainian I only speak with my grandmother, whom I only see on major holidays and French very rarely so both are rusty and it takes time for me to formulate the words. Knowing these leads me to be able to understand a limited amount of various East Slavic languages (like Russian) and Portuguese.

What on earth were you thinking when you made that poll?

Couldn't you have just used 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. without the need to specify combinations of various Asian languages?

I am sure that people will post and tell you if you really wish to know.

There are really some daft posters who have no command of the English language. Should have had a category for 0 languages. Lol.

But all in all. A good sample size. But didn't really answer the question I was looking for.

Having a good question is really imperative in formulating a good study design.
A little more understanding in why the doc dedicated a couple of slides to emphasising the importance of framing a good question.

I will return with another poll when this dies out.

Thank you for the participation!

Native Language : Spanish
Fluent Secondary : English

Learned German in school, became fluent after a year long college exchange.
Finished five years of Japanese, the only thing I'm really missing is extensive conversational experience.

So four languages.

I speak Mandarin at home , but the society i'm in uses English as the first language.
I do want/intend to learn hindu.

But i'm satisfied with the 2 languages i'm using.
Since i'm able to watch subbed dramas and read a lot manga/light novel thanks to the chinese fandom.
But I feel more comfortable typing and reading in English and the fandom is huge as well.

English, and I had Spanish for enough years in school that I can read / write and speak enough to get by for relatively short periods of time if I need to. Don't ask me to understand something a native speaker is saying, though. I'm pretty horrible at that. So call it 1.3 languages.

Romanian (mother language), English (fluent), French(intermediate or something) and, Japanese and German at a basic level. I'm perfecting my Japanese and German atm. The one I'll never probably perfect is French ( no offense, but I don't like it). I plan on learning some Spanish or Portuguese next, just in case I ever land in South America :D

I started teaching myself Japanese about 2 years ago, but I'm quite lazy at that, even though I think it is the most beautiful language;^^
