THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Is it just that I've been watching recent, all-digital shows lately or is the animation in this unusually plastic and expressive? I'm finding it pretty charming.

The dream thing is an interesting way of starting a pulp series like this. It's pretty much outright admitting that it's all a masculine fantasy.

This is a megabump but True Man. Gokmen encode is godtier. Shit looks better than most shows nowadays and this came out more than 30 years ago!

Rewatching this (for the first time in japanese) right after starting the manga, I find the way they tried to "fix" the original first chapter pretty good. Extending the time Cobra was hidden is alright and the encounter with the pirate who holds grudge on him is (for me) more believable than the manga's coincidental road accident. The last scene of course adds to the "cool factor" (and Cobra is all about cool) in a way only animation could have effectively done.

5/5

@malonur If it is true, it is great: I just bought half of the manga (freshly reprinted in my country) on an impulse so I assume it will lead me to appreciate the anime even more. (plus the manga has stories who were never adapted)

I don't know if you count also the more recent adaptations (the OAV and TV series "The Animation") in your statement, but you might soon have to revise your judgement because of the next adaptation: sadly not the doomed Alexandre Aja movie but a monegasque animated series.

@FMmatron Wich previous design? Could you point out differences, please?

You should check the movie (it's an original take on one of the stories adapted here), it's even more Dezaki-esque and great to look at. Internet people might have spread bad rumours about it but it's great in its own way.

Also, be warned that the show has little "continuity" between the various adventures.

Ps: I hope that you won't be one of those peoples who only swear by the rugball© episodes.

Ooh, I see. There was a story set in the past, a full colour manga released with a republication. I think it has been adapted in an OAV during the digital era.

There are many differences between manga and anime if you don't know. It's one those rare cases where anime is better than the source material.

No I don't count the recent adaptations which were pretty faithful to the manga and therefore not as good as the original series.

While the new animation looks good I don't believe it could be as good as the original series since it lacks the touch of Osamu Dezaki.

I prefered Cobra's old design, but damn, this episode was kickass. Not that I expected anything less than greatness when Dezaki and Shounen Jump come together. The vibe is cool and visuals are eye candy. Looking forward to an exciting space adventure.

@Rei366 I meant how he looked before, with the long hair.

I will probably check it afterwards(even tho I'm not a fan of franchise movies, here I make an exception)

And yeah, I went in knowing it would be more episodic.

Watched the pilot episode first and I like the first episode of the TV version. The pacing is much better.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

very good. you are presented with an incredible protagonist who has to fight his past. a futuristic world very much from the eighties (I LIKE THAT A LOT) and also quite colorful animation, really.
