Oldest show I've seen to completion is Zambot 3 (77). I've eps of of Mazinger Z (72), Grendizer (75) and Yamato (74) though. I need to see more 70s stuff other than mecha but not sure where to start.

The question is probably better suited as what the oldest full length series you've seen. In that case it would be Ashita no Joe from 1970. Lupin from 1971 and Mazinger Z from 1972 are some of the other oldest.

If we're counting short films, I'd say 1917 's Namakura Katana or 1918's Momotarou. Excluding that, I'd say the original 1979 incarnation of Mobile Suit Gundam, as far as completed series go. Pretty sure I saw some Astro Boy when I was younger, though. Along with Gigantor/Tetsujin 28-Go.

In terms of shorts, Male by Osamu Tezuka, made in 1962.
For movies, Little Norse Prince by Isao Takahata, made in 1968.
And for TV series, Rose of Versailles by Osamu Dezaki, which ran from 1979 to 1980.

Once the blu ray rip is complete for Future Boy Conan, I plan on marathoning it, seems interesting, very much curious about pre Ghibli stuff.

I may only be 17, but Versailles no Bara is probably in my top 5 fave anime TV series. I thought it was better than Gurren Lagann, which IMO had an amazing first half (1-15), but the second half (16-27) I felt lost the plot if ya get what I'm saying.

You may be 17 but you can identify quality.

Let's see.
Short: I think it was Harvest Festival from 1930.
Films: Panda and the Magic Serpent aka Hakujaden from 1958.
Complete TV Series: Lupin The Third First series from 1971.
The oldest TV episode that I watched, was the first episode from the first Astroboy TV series from 1963.

I think that some american company released a DVD compiling some of those short noir classics some years ago. But if you stay alert on what's being released by fansubs on Animesuki and Tokyo Toshokan, for example, you are able to catch them when they are released, fresh, with seeds. Or just look up on BakaBT.

I haven't seen any anime beyond Genshi Shounen Ryuu that I could call full flegded anime productions. Not that they don't exist, but all the ones I've seen are more like short experimentations made for unknown purposes. I'd hardly even count many of those relevant to what we understand as anime.

But then, for reasons of historical interpretation, I don't consider anything prior to that to be "anime." So if we're merely looking animation from Japan, "Namakura-gatana" from 1917.

Short animated movie would be - 1970 The Bathroom (though i wouldn't count it as anime, it's more like surrealistic animated movie than anime itself).

Normal lenght movie - 1979 Galaxy Express 999.

I have an addiction to old anime, maybe thats why i enjoy watching Ozma, which is 2012 anime but has that amazing old styled animation <3

Oldest thing i own japanese anime wise would be asto boy (mighty atom). Very interesting to watch as it laid the foundation for everything after, tho as far as the astro boy story (manga) in anime form, the 1980's one is more watchable.

for me I think

Uchi Senkan Yamato and Space Pirate Captain Harlock I love 70s anime feel - I've also watched:

Space Adventure Cobra movie,

Crusher Joe

Space Runaway Ideon (series and both films)

the oldest one I've yet to watch but will soon:

Gullivers Space Travels

the art looks unbelievably beautiful, very solid and painterly, and it also often seems to have no 'outlines' or very subtly coloured outlines, which adds to its unique style IMO

Oh I've watched/gazed in puzzlement at a fair bit of Crabstick/HK subbed Mazinger Z too :p -

http://r4ytrace.tumblr.com/post/31880034405/mazinger-z-subs-siro-are-you-ok-dont

this shall all end soon though -

I believe right now the oldest anime series I've completed is Devilman... '72. I just finished Mazinger Z which is also 1972, but MAL states that it started airing a few months after Devilman. I thought there was something I watched from '71 but looking at my list I guess not.

I'm planning to take my first dip into 60s anime with Kurenai Sanshiro and Ninpuu Kamui Gaiden sometime soon.

The only one I can think of, or care to mention, is a short called Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki from 1933. Maybe it's because of the use of mythical animals or the setting taking place in the woods during a full-moon night or even the music but I really like it.

If we're talking about anime series, then the Only thing I can think of is the 1963 version of Astro Boy or Mighty Atom.
