Well, I listened to this today......and I like metal as much as the next guy, but pretty much that's all the first half is (it even sneaks into the latter half a bit) >_>

I did enjoy some stuff in the second half, though, and wrote down a few bands to check out ^_^
You've come a long way, baby.

Listened to it yesterday. I liked most of the songs, will definitely check out some of the bands.
Insomnium was wonderful.

Edit: Now with ratings, because I'm unoriginal like that.

Also, I just noticed that my pick was the only one released before 2000. I'm not sure what to think of that..

1. Dope - Now or Never: 3/10
2. KMFDM - Free Your Hate: 4/10

First two songs aren't my thing.

3. Textures - To Erase a Lifetime: (7 + 3 = 10 / 2 = 5) 5/10

The Textures track piqued my interest. I actually enjoyed it.. until exactly two minutes and fifty seconds in, that is. A shame.

4. Insomnium - Mortal Share: 2/10
5. Underoath - Down, Set, Go: 2/10
6. Carpathian Forest - Doomed To Walk The Earth As Slaves Of The Living Dead: 4/10
7. Kamelot - Soul Society: 6/10 (?!)

Black metal just cracks me up. I can't help it. And as much as I dislike power metal, the Kamelot was almost a welcome respite from the preceding three songs, haha..

8. Volbeat - Maybellene I Hofteholder: 7/10
9. DJ Hoppa - Get to Know You (feat. Cleen): 7/10

Have to admit, I got a kick out of the Volbeat, who seem to have a unique sound. Might have to check out more by them. The DJ Hoppa track is quite good, only wish it were longer. This is the kind of variety I was looking for.

10. Mutyumu - Kaen Tori: 8/10
11. Frou Frou - Flicks: 6/10

Mutyumu is very cool. Post rock that mixes things up a bit (i.e. doesn't sound like a GYBE! clone), with pretty female vocals. My favorite track so far. Thank you, Karura! Never been a Frou Frou fan, but I don't dislike them. The song is pleasant enough and a good change of pace.

12. Why? - Rubber Traits: 5/10
13. Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You: 9/10

Why?, again I've never been a fan of (same with cLOUDDEAD and Odd Nosdam), and I don't really know why. My pick.. I'm biased towards, of course.

14. Dredg - Bug Eyes: 7/10
15. La Casa Azul - La Nueva Yma Sumac: 7/10

The Dredg is pretty good, another one to look into. La Casa Azul is definitely not the kind of music I normally like, but I'm enjoying it.. somehow. It's fun and a nice change. Must be in a good mood, haha.

16. Ludo - Go-Getter Greg: 2/10
17. Scar Symmetry - Slaves to the Subliminal: 4/10

I'd even take more Kamelot over this Ludo song. Take that as you will.. Next is Scar Symmetry. I don't care for death metal in the first place, but mixing in the melody makes it sound doubly silly to my ears, in a similar way to power metal, I guess. I have the same problem with Opeth. I tried.

18. Astronautalis - The Story of My Life: 6/10
19. Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element: 7/10

I like the kind of mellow hip-hop in the Astronautalis track. That's a genre I haven't explored yet, but have been meaning to.. Pain of Salvation mixes the melody and metal a little more successfully (wish more metal bands would use "clean" vocals). Some good ideas, and although it's not saying much, it does sound better than most prog-metal I've heard. Might need to check out a whole album and see how well the sound carries over.

20. SGX - Crowdpleaser [Drop the Mic Mix]: 5/10

Interesting choice for closing track. Not usually big on techno, although I like a bit of Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers and Prodigy on occasion. This seems decent, however. Doesn't give me a headache, which I suppose is a good sign.

So, this wasn't nearly as painful an experience as I'd expected. Even found a few songs I like (Mutyumu's in particular). Also have to compliment Kokonoe on the track sequencing. The whole thing flows surprisingly well.

[end self-indulgent post]

Oh yes, very much looking forward to the next mixtape (already have a song in mind). This was a great idea.

That SGX song isn't even techno. xD To me anyway, it's a mix of bigbeat electronic and hiphop.

The quality really ranges from very bad to very good, but that is to be expected. Standout songs (in my opinion) are:

Textures - To Erase A Lifetime (Gnome)
Dredg - Bug Eyes (Neverender; probably the best song in this mixtape)
Astronautalis - The Story of My Life (wtfyourface)
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element (Baman)

Only found 3 songs in there that I couldn't stand and had to delete from my harddrive ASAP. Also looking forward to the next mixtape. Have a song in mind, and hoping it gets the positive response that the SGX song got, but I doubt it.

Gonna give it a listen tonight, too bad I already know 2/3rds of the bands on the mixtape. :(

Dredg is indeed very good, I don't know why I haven't been listening to them for over a year now. I like Why? too, I like to end my day with it.
As for Kamelot, not really my style, even though I only have one of their albums (can't remember the name oddly, it had March of Mephisto on it), but I can still listen to it on a whim.

@wizwinkleman : if you liked Pain of Salvation, try Ayreon (if you haven't already), it's got the same feeling to it. Lots of people start with their Human Equation album, quite good actually, even if the second CD is weaker IMO.

Some scores.

1 (Kokonoe) Dope - Now Or Never : 7/10
Nu Metal have never been my favourite genre, but sometimes it's rather alright, and this is one of the better examples I've heard.

2 (k1ng) KMFDM - Free Your Hate: 4/10
This is of the kind of Industrial I don't really like. I have to admit, though, I actually bought a DeathStars album once (2 for the price of 1 offer) but that's because those guys are hilarious.

3 (Gnome) Textures - To Erase a Lifetime: 9/10
This was quite good. Which is why I raided their discography off the net.

4 (Mathes) Insomnium - Mortal Share: 8/10
Not the best Melodic Death I've heard, but certainly good enough to make me DL some of their CDs.

5 (Underoath) Down, Set, Go: 5/10
Now, I am naturally biased against religiously themed bands, and I'm no lover of Metalcore Screamo either. It wasn't appaling though, just not appealing.

6 (karake) Carpathian Forest - Doomed To Walk The Earth As Slaves Of The Living Dead: 5/10
Despite being a Norwegian, I've never been much of a fan of Black Metal. I do have a sizable chunk of Black Metal on my HD, but those I have mostly gotten from someone else and just listen casually to once in a while. As for this particular track, I fear I can't praise my fellow countrymen too much for this.

7 (DarkFlash) Kamelot - Soul Society: 7/10
I have far too much music on my various HD's, and Kamelot is wedged into a corner of some music folder there somewhere. Not being a true fan of Power Metal, I tend to end up listening mostly to those humorously epic ones like DragonForce and Rhapsody. But Kamelot did indeed sound promising here, so I guess I'll have to drag out that folder sometime...

8 (cyruz) Volbeat - Maybellene I Hofteholder: 8/10
I saw these guys live at Karmøygeddon, and couldn't help being swayed by their Elvis covers. Downloading now.

9 (itainteazy) DJ Hoppa - Get to Know You (feat. Cleen): 4/10
Not my cup of tea. I tend to run from anything with DJ in the name, especially if it's hiphop...

10 (Karura) Mutyumu - Kaen Tori: 9/10
Now, this was interesting. So I see they've released Ilya in 2008, do they have anything else? Searches comes up blank.

11 (Kimura) Frou Frou - Flicks: 8/10
Another interesting one. I'm not usually one for Electronica, but after falling prey to Ulver, this one seems promising too. CD Get!

12 (Palimpsest) - Why - Rubber Traits: 6/10
Sort of lacking the edge required to get me hooked, but it was a good listen nonetheless.

13 (wizwinkleman) Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You: 7/10
I'm not a fan of old school Post Punk, but I can't deny it's charm.

14 (Neverender) - Dredg - Bug Eyes: 9/10
I really liked this piece, certainly a something to get. Prog Rock comes in so many forms and flavours.

15 (Kaiserpingvin) La Casa Azul - La Nueva Yma Sumac: 8/10
Certainly the most remarkable track in the mix. Not something I'd be inclined to listen to regularly, but it did have an unusual charm.

16 (SymbolliC) Ludo - Go Getter Greg: 6/10
A little too much on the pop side for my tastes, so unfortunately, no getting this time.

17 (GomuBlade) Scar Symmetry - Slaves to the Subliminal: 7/10
A good changing between growling and clean vocals, and good piece of Melodic Death. Also, yet another Scandinavian band. At least we're good for something :D

18 (wtfyourface) Astronautalis - The Story of My Life: 5/10
Once again, Hip Hop isn't my cup of preferred liquid. Though I'd admit it's one of the better Hip Hop tracks I've heard.

20 (BlueYoshi) SGX - Crowdpleaser [Drop the Mic Mix]: 4/10
Another liquid I'd prefer not to occupy my cup at breakfast. I've never been a fan of Techno, and if this is bigbeat electronic and hiphop, then I guess I'm not a fan of that either D:

For those of you who found PoS interesting, I'd recommend The Perfect Element album for more of the same Prog Metal style, BE for grand orchestral pieces and unusual compositions, there's not much left of the Metal part in it though, and Their newest album, Scarsick, for various influences and parodies of other genres.

Well, I'm not really a fan of most electronic music, so I wouldn't know the difference between various sub-genres. I tend to use techno and electronic interchangeably, for example, although I realize that's not necessarilly correct.

I am nearly unable to dislike any music (a very nice disability), so it doesn't mean very much when I say that I really liked pretty much all songs on the tape - there was one or two unremarkable ones, the rest was awwwright. The ones I fell hardest for would be:

Get to Know You - DJ Hoppa feat. Cleen
Very nice, easy to digest and very airy. Clears my skull, somehow, which is good considering the mess it generally is in.

Kaen Tori - The band with a thousand names
The song I loved the most out of the ones on the tape. Gonna devour their discography like a mad dog as soon as possible.

I Wanna Destroy You - Soft Boys
Oh hell yes. I love that chorus.

Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element
Epic. In the real sense of the word as well as the colloquial.

There's a reason I fear Swedish music intensely.

That's even one of the better songs in the particular genre of my ire.

But yeah, I feel sort of ashamed I didn't find this delightful awesomeness earlier.

Guess a copy/paste of the opening post would work, but will probably need to extend the deadline.. or perhaps not. The turnout was pretty good for this first one, so maybe two weeks would be enough? Three?

I don't know if I'd want to be in charge of this, in case he doesn't come back.. He will, won't he? Anyone know?

No, I had a good reason for being offline for so long, and I've been trying to get back online as soon as possible, and only managed to do it today. I'm back for good now, finally.

I started the mixtape thing, it will be done my way. Next one will be late, but it will proceed as planned. It's been a busy month, so no mixtape this time. I'll start Mixtape #2 on November 1.

OK, I just got around to listen to this one now, and here's my highly untimely breakdown:

1 (Kokonoe) Dope - Now Or Never: 3/10
sorry, Linkin Park + The Offspring is not my definition of a recipe for success (I know this makes me seem like an ignorant bastard not realising nu-metal goes beyond its poster boys, but whatever).

2 (k1ng) KMFDM - Free Your Hate: 3-4/10
Better. A bit catchy and an interesting sound for a short while, but it quickly wears off.

3 (Gnome) Textures - To Erase a Lifetime: 4-5/10
I've had their discography lying around for ages but this is the first time I gave a song of theirs a listen. Ultimately sounds as if Matchbook Romance went prog metal, then hardcore and then merged the two together before throwing a little tantrum while fading out. Barely average.

4 (Mathes) Insomnium - Mortal Share: 6/10
Quite generic, but still not bad, I like it!

5 (Underoath) Down, Set, Go: 3/10
Oh God, Senses Fail flashbacks. Sorry, but that was bad.

6 (karake) Carpathian Forest - Doomed To Walk The Earth As Slaves Of The Living Dead: 6/10
Catchy and enjoyable!

7 (DarkFlash) Kamelot - Soul Society: 6/10
Another enjoyable track, some really nice sections.

8 (cyruz) Volbeat - Maybellene I Hofteholder: 3-4/10
Not this band -.- I had to suffer through their live show earlier this year just to reserve a place for when Kreator would play afterwards... as if their music wasn't bad enough, the vocalist constantly attempted to be funny with his lame Cannibal Corpse-imitations and Achmed the Dead Terrorist jokes. Nothing but bad memories.

9 (itainteazy) DJ Hoppa - Get to Know You (feat. Cleen): 4-5/10
Quite OK.

10 (Karura) Mutyumu - Kaen Tori: 8/10
YES! I love this song, great decision to choose a Mutyumu song, Karura!

11 (Kimura) Frou Frou - Flicks: 4-5/10
Not too shabby, but not anything specially interesting either.

12 (Palimpsest) - Why - Rubber Traits: 3/10
Eh?

13 (wizwinkleman) Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You: 3-4/10
Not. my style.

14 (Neverender) - Dredg - Bug Eyes: 4-5/10
Never got around to try this band out, but this wasn't all too promising. OK though.

15 (Kaiserpingvin) La Casa Azul - La Nueva Yma Sumac: 7/10
Hell, this was awesome hahaha! Really funny track, enjoyable =)

16 (SymbolliC) Ludo - Go Getter Greg: 3/10
Eh?

17 (GomuBlade) Scar Symmetry - Slaves to the Subliminal: 5-6/10
Didn't like the clean vocals too much, but the rest was quite fine. Nice solo too.

18 (wtfyourface) Astronautalis - The Story of My Life: 4-5/10
Sort of interesting and quite relaxing.

19 (Baman) Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element: 9/10
Well I've heard this song God knows how many times before and it still remains one of my favourites. That part from 4:30-ish to 6:30 is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, and the part following it is sublime as well!

20 (BlueYoshi) SGX - Crowdpleaser [Drop the Mic Mix]: 3/10
Eh?

The Dredg is pretty good, another one to look into.

I chose Bug Eyes because it's probably the most accessible song of theirs but you'd probably like their older stuff a lot more. The band as a whole, though, is fairly accessible which is why I ended up going with Dredg, since a lot of people in this club seem to be afraid of anything that's not rock/metal/j-pop. Your submission was badass, though.
