Does the anime/manga ever tone down the humor a bit. I am enjoying the show so far but my one issue is it feels like that the author is trying so hard to make it funny that a lot of scenes are devolving into gags. Does it ever balance it out a little and reduce the overall amount of humor a bit.

I agree. The beginning of the show has too many jokes in too little time and they felt more awkward than funny. But the Laguna Arc tones the humour down a bit for some serious drama. There are funny bits, but not so much as before.

Despite of the occasional humors and Fairy Tail antics, I'm glad all of them stay in characters. Shonen like Gintama' and Beelzebub go all out, that maybe they forgot about the main story.
