THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
GHOST SHIP! or is it a real ship?

The club president knows Marika is a candidate for captain of the Bentenmaru.

Marika wants the fight the attack ship. The crew and Marika decide they will fight the ship. Marika draws up an enemy scenario and a counterattack. Marika predicts the enemy will attack them from behind in shadow the Sand Of The Red Star. (behind the planet)

Marika plans to make a copy of the Odette II's system in isolated area. Basically a dummy that the enemy will attack and they won't be affected by the enemy.

The crew and Marika find out that the ship is trying to act like the battleship Alclyon from 120 years ago. Marika suggests they take over the enemy ship and Lynn says it is possible. YAY MORE ELECTRONIC WARFARE.

Marika and the crew has quite a fight on their hands in the next ep. Can't wait.

Who are they fighting with? Ghost ship? okay then.

It's getting worse. Please get better next week.

This anime is progressing slowly, but I like it. And I cannot wait for the next ep >.<

Alltogether, I think the speed at the moment fits a 2season anime, especially since it explains stuff.
I want Rambo in a mecha-suit with a laser-chainsaw gun that fires nuclear warheads, fighting the love-child of Predator, Alien, a group of Bangladeshi terrorists, and Satan. (Actually that would be a pretty sick show) - StopDropAndBowl

Marika will make a great captain, otherwise episode got me hooked to the next.

I loved the imagery for the computers systems and the scanner.

Finally someone made this topic. I was too scared to do it myself, I've never done a topic like this ~uguu~

But yeah, it was an ok episode, I wish they would get into action soon, because I'm getting tired of the endless "blahblahblah mehmehmeh blaablablaaaa", just make her the captain of the damn Bentenmaru and start the pew-pew against aliens and evil people.

I really liked this episode. It's progressing slowly but what I love to see in an anime is a story that knows what it wants to be. I love the straightforwardness of girl space pirates hacking into computers and taking over ships with big guns in there hands. I am eagerly awaiting to see what an actually pirate confrontation is going to look like.

Distance scales in the hundreds of of thousands of km, approaching the 7th digit, and you people are still expecting pewpew laser fights as a mainstay of the series? Haha.

Well, at least the preview has lasers, so the people who have no idea what sort of series they're watching might be satisfied with the next episode. And then they'll get angry because it'll be back to the perfect space drama pacing we've had the past few episodes.

Sigh, ain't that the truth... Still the best show this season hands down.

If you mean perfect space drama pacing = boring dialogue about things that no one who isn't a complete computer geek understands for the whole episode. Then I'd agree.

I'm not only interested in laser fights. I WANT SOMETHING just something to happen.

Another great episode :)
it has all things I love in Tatsuo Satou and one thing is that slow tempo
or you might also say building the background... instead of I don't know... attacking unknown ship without a plan or making in on a way, with a crew that has no idea what and why they are doing it
plus really nice characters... I like the President, she really thinks about the consequences of their action

and those dialogues werent so complicated... they will be facing a ship that's probably pretending to be a ghost one

Yes it does and this would explain the slow pacing, Marika has to find the right people for her crew in order to be a successful Space Pirate.

It was an good episode and it is getting more interesting. However, they always leave us hanging right at the end of every episode whenever things gets serious which also pisses me off. And no, it doesn't give that "cliffhanger" feeling. It's like this feeling you get whenever you are talking to someone on phone and your phone dies in the middle of your conversation. I't can't be helped, i'll just have to wait to see whats gonna happen next.

Lol the class president knew Marika's true identity which was something i didn't expect anyone in that club knows about except for a few people. There's something fishy about that ghost ship. They said it was a small ship so probably only one person is on board that ship. I wonder how the battle between the 2 ships is going to be cause im totally lost about what that electronic warfare thing is.

Heres my two cents.

The scene where you hear the conversationg between Misa-sensei and Kane give a spoiler. The part where Misa compliments the plan the girls came up with saying,

"Impressive huh? They know we're on board"

I think this is whole battle is a test of Marika leadership skills. The crew of the Bentenmaru are testing her to see if Marika is worthy of being the captain of Bentenmaru.

Actually, the stated it was less than one meter and unmanned. It's a remote drone being used by some other ship at a much greater distance away. Being small, it's expected that it would be very easy to hide. It was found because the girls who make up the crew include some very talented individuals, and their ship, being much more than an ordinary club yacht, has some fancy equipment for them to use.

I'm all for the technical aspect of this, it's not like I'm going to college to be computer illiterate or something, but I really want to see pirates. Thus, I have come up with a fair ultimatum: if the real, hardened, space-scurvy pirates don't show up by episode 7 (about one quarter of the way through, give or take) I'll have to drop it.

That being said, I do find the hacking to be pretty interesting, but I also think these girls are a bit arrogant, regardless of their upbringings...

As others have said, it's only episode 4 of a 26 episode series. I thought this episode was a bit boring too, but it's hard when you're watching a show week by week instead of all at once.

I also agree that some of the technical talk is a bit confusing, and their attitudes towards things confuse me as well. Are they actually fighting REAL dangers or is this just a test? That's what confused me most.

Other than that though I still like the show. Waiting for more obvious shoujo-ai implications, but the majority so far were in the first couple episodes. I'm also curious to see if they're going to actually make it shoujo-ai or just keep it like this the whole way through, with the girls just being really good friends. Considering how obviously this show is aimed at a younger audience, I'm guessing the latter will be the case. Either way, I'm sure it will be great.

I would like to point out that Marika doesn't need to be an expert on electronic warfare to be a good leader. She just needs to know enough to effectively lead her crew (the experts) to victory.

I don't know about anyone but can someone explain this:

more simple. How the heck is the compensation of that is able to fool out radar readings exactly?

Despite all that I have to say I was drooling at the following,

Pleiades Class Battleship Arsion even as a ghost ship looks nice. Kind of like the Bentenmaru.

About the Oddette 2, once again it impressed greatle in the spoiler
amazing designs that were well shown with it’s Sails out. Quite something amazingly well rendered to be short.

About the screens, the screens/monitors in the spoiler
were all well exploited as to what to expect f displays in this series. I rather liked all of them for their detections.

Other elements,
  • I loved Marika’s interaction with Chiaki and her faces in the spoiler
from being tired to goofy, Marika was all around funny and great.

  • I don’t know if I am the only one but Percy in the following spoiler
really caught my liking to her. Must be the voice.

  • I have to say I am starting to like Misa in the spoiler
I guess her breasts and body are getting to me. She does look hot the more I see her in this series and she is mature. She is also a little of a teaser.

About the preview, is everyone excited for the following,

Holy crap! Oddette 2 first firing bang wan! One shot from a cannon around its masts possibly? More ship show off on its side but most of all its engine firing here. That looks exciting. The hacking looks nice here too. I wonder what Jenny here sees? Surely something.

BTW Image Stitches done in the spoiler
mainly groups, a Oddette 2 one and one of Lynn.

Intermission in the spoiler
is a nice group one with the Oddette 2. I find it very well done.

I absolutely love this show. I can't remember when was the last time I've been that immersed into a fictional world.

I especially love how the characters are all self-dependent, true-to-life individuals with a tad of anime aura mixed in. And they are beautifully working together to achive one goal.
I also really dig the technical backgrounds and realistic portrayal of aerospace engineering. If they don't screw this up, it'll easily become my favourite. Please don't screw up!

Interesting episode ones again.
Marika seems to become more competent for captain each episode and we learn something new about her every time.
I also have to say that the girls are pretty capable detecting a few vessels that are actually hiding learning such a skill would normally take a special course at a navy facility.
It also seems that the Odette 2 is pretty well equipped even tho it has not been used for piracy in years.
You would expect the technology for combat or spotting hiding vessels to be outdated since it's property of a high school but this doesn't seem to be the case.
I also wonder how so many talented girls ended up in the same club it's almost like the club president was looking for them.

Well, for starters, it's only part of how the probe is setting up an electronic signature to fake what it looks like. The doppler effect can be used to determine much more than just relative speed. Even if the probe was perfectly stationary, as the Oddet itself moves the aspect of the probe would change, meaning that parts of it would be moving closer and parts farther away. Do this -- next time you are in a car spot a truck with a trailer you are passing (or being passed by) and notice details just as you pass it. Assume you are approaching from behind the trailer. Since it is long, the back end will be receding from you while the front is still getting closer. Using this information and how fast you are moving, you can get an idea of the size and shape of the truck. Using the doppler effect, you can use radar to do just this. In space, nothing is motionless with respect to other things. There will always be slight rotation, apparent motion, and even, if it is close to a heat source, changes in size due to thermal expansion and contraction (since the parts facing the heat source will expand and thus change shape relative to the parts that are not facing the heat source). Dopplar can detect these sort of things (though our current technology is far to primitive to do what they are doing, we can actually use this to study things like this in a lab setting, as that wiki page describes, or very large space objects like stars and such).

So, essentially, what the writer was implying with that simple "Mix in something to compensate for the Doppler effect" was a lot of detail regarding hiding the probe's true physical nature so that the faked signature of a battleship didn't have to compete with true signals that would contradict its fake size, shape and apparent motion, while at the same time probably giving fake doppler effect details to the fake battleship to help make it look real.

Yes but from what i was reading not all radars use the Doppler effect.
So you should be able to tell where he is and what shape he has with a different radar unless the satellite has a form of stealth.

And maybe they could also be using a Inverse Doppler effect since there technology is much more advanced as ours it also means that there knowledge is more advanced to ours.

Impressive, this show really is going out of its way to prove that Chiaki is fit to captain a ship, even at her young age and with no real experience. It's on the job training and the perfect test at the same time. It also doesn't hurt that she seems to have a junior pirate crew with the yacht club, as well. I'm sure people will utter "contrivance" at the hacker girl, but if it gets the job done and doesn't completely ruin my "suspention of disbelief", then I have no problem with it.

I'm still very anxious to see what the space combat is going to be like once it actually starts.

The art is still something of the nineties, but it seems that the story is progressing. We learnt something about the crew (girls with private problems, maybe later on they'll have their own specialty befitted in the ship) and the next episode seems to be more action-packed then the previous ones.

It's not the radar itself, it's the way you analyze the signal received by the receiver (radar tracking stations are active in that they send out a signal and capture the reflected pusle, but doppler effect obviously does not require an active pulse). You write some computer program that analyzes the signals to get the information you are looking for. For example, radar used at airports to keep track of aircraft has no reason to try to determine the size and shape of what it is tracking.

Aversa said:

That was the entire point of the discussion they had about how they detected it - the probe is hiding itself using some advanced (to us) technology while the heroes managed to detect it using some equally advanced (to us) technology and some good guesswork.

Aversa said:

Good reference. Today's curiosities are tomorrow's applications.

A really good book to read is Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel. You don't have to be a geek to ready and understand this book - the writer has done a good job at targeting a general audience. Anyone interested in both real science and Sci-Fi in general should give this book a try.

Probably the best analogy we have from the 'real world' is that of submarine warfare, particularly since the advent of nuclear propulsion. I also highly recommend the movie The Hunt for Red October. For all practical purposes, in any conflict involving such vessels it all comes down to who can see without being seen.
