For me, not usually - but I did feel kinda awkward when I realized Kujo and Victorique (Gosick) were, like, 12...

And when I think about it, a lot of protagonists are 15. Now, I don't know if that's just me, but I think that's a bit young. I really prefer watching 17-21 year olds. Well, I guess that's probably because I'm in that age region.

Unless you're going to Fakku, age doesn't really matter. It's whether their personalities are interesting or not.
I work in VNs. Sometimes, they have h-scenes and I go "waai~". I also like to not write at Oppai is Justice, a blog with great urls.

It's the story that matters and well developed characters. I'm not planing on drinking with them I just want a great story, and that can be told by young and old characters alike. Age by itself matters not.

Not in the least. Especially when the animation and character designs are vague and don't acurately portray their age. You'll have a freshman ( 14-15 year old ) in a series and they may very well look like they're in their 20's. One clear example I can think of if Beelzebub. There is no way half the cast are high school characters based on their style and design. But alas, they are.

Anywho, no, age doesn't matter to me.

Age isn't to big for me but it depends. It's more over how young they look though.. Like I don't like it when the male lead looks too young.
For example Zero no Tsukaima Saito looks really young to me almost like a kid.(Not to bad though)
Basically if the male lead looks like this.(looks pretty damn young)

It kind of strays me away from the anime.. If it's good though I'll still watch it, but I don't like it when the lead looks like he's from elementary or middle school....
Touch me, you filthy casual~

Yes, well, considering it's a series that has has just begun airing, I am not aware of it. But yes, it is a good example, but doesn't discredit mine.

You can almost never trust what they say a character's age is in an anime, because they usually look years younger. But the numbered age of the character doesn't bother me, its the age appearance that does.

I couldn't watch an anime filled with 5 year old children, and I also couldn't watch an anime full of 65 year olds either. Maybe this is why most anime out there have teenage/early adult main characters.

Not as long as the characters' ages fit their respective roles.
Even when it's out of place (Tessa in Full Metal Panic, for example), I find it mildly annoying at best. Not something that affects my enjoyment of an anime to any significant extent.

I like when characters are around my age, but it isn't a huge deal. Anime characters always act years older than they are, so when a character is said to be 15, I take that to mean they're around 19.

Well...in two of my favorite animes (NGE and Yu Yu Hakusho) the characters are 14 years old. It's probably the best age for character development because well 14 years old/8th grade is honestly one of the hardest ages to be. It's an awkward stage where you're in puberty and you're transitioning into an adult. Animes with 14 year olds usually stress things about growing up or taking on more responsibility and the character's growth is easy to see by the end of the series. Ex. Yusuke Urameshi in Yu Yu Hakusho leanrs this the hard way during the Dark Tournament when Genkai literally tells him that he can't be a stupid kid anymore because he has people to protect. By the end of the series, Yusuke's waaaay more mature.)

I'm only bothered that a character is a little kid if they keep emphasizing that he is only a kid and therefor not capable of doing grown up stuff. You often see that in shounen. I was really bothered by it while watching Eureka 7. I mean, the only reason that they emphasize that, is because the main character proves otherwise and reasssures the 10 year olds that watch said show into thinking that they can do anything regardless of age. Constantly stressing that you are just as good as a grown up seems very immature to me. What really makes a person mature is not age, but a sense of responsibility aswell as empathy (and ofcourse common sense). The main character of a show normally does realize this at some point but it takes them an entire show to figure it out. ><

But normally I don't really care about the age of the characters as long as the show is good. Though I am getting sick of the 14 year olds in school anime, there are way too many of those.

Done ranting now xD.

Right now, I prefer them in their twenties, but a few middle-aged protagonist here and there would be nice too. But still, it's more about their role and personality than age specifically. Above all, I'm just tired of fucking highschool. More than I was when I attended.

Hm. Ages doesn't matter really.

Even if they are like 15 years old, they look like adults already.

A good example are characters of Bleach and Prince Of Tennis.
Bleach has like 100 year old shinigamis.
And the students in Prince Of Tennis looks older than their age.

Character ages and looks should be functional to the story. Far too many times you'll see a girl that looks like she's aged 12 or younger (but actually is same age as "normal" looking characters or is even a 1000 years old) interact with grown ups in disturbing manners. This I dislike a lot. I know pedophilia is a cultural sport in Japan, but I get sick of that stuff.

Even on MAL there's clubs revering child pornography. It's quite disturbing.

On the other hand we have the mecha genre that likes to put teens in places where they normally wouldn't. I know this is to appeal to the target audience, but what you see in general anime is:

Aged 10: young
Aged 15: mature
Aged 20: battle hardened veteran
Aged 30: old fart

The word "ridiculous" isn't even close to expressing what the above age classification is.

Do character ages matter? Yes, depending on the context and functionality of the character.

If teens looked like that... :D

@Aeons

I don't like it either, but then, I know many girls of my age, and they look younger, and so cute. I don't know, I kind of like cute looking girls.

As for some anime (especially hentai lolicon and even worse toddlercon) I can say that I hate, and I would ban that from the internet......

Not really. What really matters is their style and personality. Of course, sometimes an appearance contradicting the age is cool, just to add an extra touch to the character.

I don't really like sexualization of lolis under 5 years of age in ecchi, you are going into the realm of toddlercon once you go any lower than 5. Can't you make her just a few years older, it won't change much.

Old men need to stay out my hentai especially with lolis, keep it more in the average age for lolicons (20-45), with women as long as they look like 30 or less than it's ok for a mother older than 45 to mess with a loli or shota (most likely it will be her son or daughter).

Ideal age for Male Protagonists 13-45
Ideal Age for Female protagonists:
(Non-Ecchi) 8-45
(Ecchi) anyone looking at least 7 (they don't have to be the age they look like though) but no one looking older than 40.

Age depends on the setting of the story being told. I don't expect there to be any 40 year old students in an anime that uses High School as a setting for the characters and I am fine with that.

I could careless if Amu's 11-12 and Ikuto's 17. It was Peach-Pit's original (and insanely smart/cute/amazing) pairing in the manga and my parents are like 11 years apart so fuck it.

Generally I don't care. Sometimes I have "you cradlerobber" moments in a romance if one character is a significant step younger (ie. High Schooler going out with Middle Schooler) but thats usually just when they start going out, and it passes as their story develops.

Two things about age in anime bother me:
1) Pre-pubescent Teachers... just no, GTFO
2) If they don't define a characters ago, until later and it really doesn't gel with their actions.
If they tell me a character is 14 and then they go onto to behave mature the character makes sense - they're a mature 14 year old.
But if they have them doing mature things before they establish their age, subconsciously I'm going to assume they're older so if later on they say "but I'm only 14" - it destroys the suspension of disbelief
