THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So I merged the topics since this is the actual first episode. Episode discussion for the special is here. If something's wrong, send me a message.

So after seeing the special there was not a lot of new stuff in this first episode. I still laugh at how pathetic the main guy is. Let's see how the second episode will be.

I checked this anime out after hearing promising comments from people on MAL about the manga.

First episode was pretty funny. I laughed pretty hard at some of the dialogue. Poor Negisha. Lol. Will look forward to more.

"Trendy cafe rape."

...So some friend told me to watch this OVA because it's 'awesome' (take into account I didn't read the manga). Now I know I'll regret it for at least a month.

P.S. This looks like K.I.S.S. kind of metal. Thanks but I'll stick to Edenbridge and Falconer.

KISS isn't metal. They're hard rock.

And DMC is explicitly stated to be a death metal band, so there's nothing even remotely similar between them and KISS other than the fact that DMC dresses up in paint and costumes, a trend that wasn't even started by KISS, although certainly popularized by them.

Focus

DMC will be the funniest anime series ever made, even beating out Samurai Champloo for that honor. Remember folks, I called it.

I hope to God this anime covers the manga all the way to Satanic Emperor.

That was a quote by me, not Fujibayashi, but you're wrong. They're clearly death metal. While face paint and costumes are normally associated with black metal, DMC's lyrics (do they ever mention Satan or God? No..), songs, and even style are far more reminiscient of death metal.

Plus, if you've read the manga, they're specifically referred to as playing death metal on numerous occasions.

Nice avatar and signature, by the way.

yeah ok, if you only look at the lyrics themselves then you could call this death metal.
Through if you also consider their look/corpsepaint, the general sound of what they play there and that they don't really growl ( :< )
you have something I'd maybe compare to... uhm.. Lordi? D:

Well whatever I should really start the manga as it seems, or maybe better wait till the anime has finnished..
and thanks. :)

Death metal bands don't necessarily all growl. Look at any symphonic death metal band, or even some of the blackened death metal bands. Also, what do you necessarily consider a growl? Does Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom utilize a death grunt, for example, or is he just singing in an extremely deep registrar?

You're right though, those would all fit in more with a thrash/black metal influence.

Mathes said:

Heh, I've always considered Lordi as just another hard rock band.

I don't think reading it will decrease your enjoyment of the series. In fact, for me, reading the manga has me even more hyped for the anime and live action film, since I can't wait to see how they translate some of the hilarious panels into real time action.

But it is an amusing coincidence that Gene Simmons stars in the live action movie of this, as the lead singer of the rival death metal band ^_^

Yeah, I know. They needed a famous American rock/metal icon to play Jack Ill Darke, and Gene Simmons, being the fame whore that he is (and I don't even mean that negatively), was only too eager to sign up.

Personally, I was imagining Jack Ill Darke as more of a Phil Anselmo or even Rob Zombie type, but Gene Simmons works okay, too.

I can't wait for the live action film to be translated.

They are definitely not death metal, but they do have death metal influences.
To me, they seems like thrash, or if you really wanted to go with a deep insight, you could probably say deathcore, but the vocals are a bit more harsher.

It is a great anime, however. This is like the Metalocalypse of Japan. lol

They're explicitly stated to be death metal by the manga, but in terms of sound, you're right, they sound more like a thrash band than anything.
