I'm new here (first post!), so hi all!

I was watching "Akagi" earlier today, first episode, and it suddenly strucked me. I have never seen an anime about detectives or policemen setted in our times (or even in the past). I'd love to see something like that! To be more precise: I want it not to be set in future (20th century would be awesome), it has to be dark (or, let's say, medium-dark, like "Cowboy Bebop" or "Death Note") and not very long (nothing like 50+ eps). Plot continuity is also very recommended. Also, grown up characters :) Good animation/design not required, but it's a nice addon.

I have "Monster", it should be something like that, but it's very long, so I'm keeping it for later.

You can check my list here (http://myanimelist.net/animelist/kinetikc) just so you know what I did watch and what I plan to watch.

Try Ayatsuri Sakon. It's a horror series about solving murder mysteries. The detective is a puppeteer.
Mouryou no Hako is another (very) dark murder mystery. The art is beautiful to look at and the plot is complex.
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro is about a demon detective. I haven't seen it so can't vouch for the maturity level, but it is listed as a shounen.
Mononoke. Fantastic and unique, a supernatural mystery like no other. Set in feudal Japan.
Others, though not actual mysteries, do contain the elements: Paranoia Agent, Hundred Stories, Shiki.

Thank you for suggestions! I will definietly look into them.

"Un-go" looks interesting, but "Gosick" isn't, mostly because childish protagonist (judging from the cover and plot synopsis).

@Hitchens - I did start to watch "Mouryou no Hako " and I was trilled with first five or six episodes. But then it started to drag and it took me a really long time to get to 10th episode. Then I put it on-hold, propably won't be returning to it quickly (but when I do, I'll rewatch the whole, just to keep up with all the twists).

@lisnoire - thanks for the list! I will start looking at those titles in a minute, looks very promising.

@orangejews - I saw "Death Note".
@Confucius - I plan to watch this soon, but as I wrote before, I am looking for something not set in future.

Thanks for all your recommendations!

Mouryou no Hako does get very dialogue heavy at times but hang in there. It is among the best I've seen.

The petite/moe/lollie aspect of Gosick annoyed me too. One reason being the stupid Victorian frills she wore. The story starts in 1924. The "roaring 20's" for gods sake. No one would be caught dead wearing their grandmother's clothes. Same thing for Dantalian no Shoka. It was set post WWI with cars and airplanes and stuff and there's the lollie girl wearing Victorian s**t . . . Rant over. You are returned to your regularly scheduled topic.

Really, I myself ran out of patience, or got bored with such number of episodes that I put it on hold and never tried to pick it up again. But, in truth, excluding TV original episodes, majority of the cases are each worth a shot for detective/mystery story lovers.

And of course, the best course of action you could take IMO is to watch Monster asap.
We are the United. Even in defeat we stand united.

--The mysteries are pretty good but the juvenile presentation puts me off. Just me. Premise: a 17 year old detective genius gets transferred to the body of a little kid thus significantly complicating his relationship with his girlfriend and how he goes about getting people to accept his crime solving ideas. Armed with that knowledge you are now free to watch any of the copious Detective Conan movies and skip the never ending series or drop in in the middle. . . . if you want to.

I agree with @lisnoire. I know a lot of anime main characters are kids, but it just puts me off. That's the main reason why I didn't even start with "Detective Conan" (or with a lot of other series).

The flaws of Detective Conan doesn't lie in the characters, but that the story will never go anywhere. I don't mind the age of characters in anime as much as their maturity, and Conan is decent. That said, I watched it for its mysteries. In that aspect, in my opinion, it is still among the best out there (at least the first few seasons; most of the later episodes were quite unimaginative, bar few and the black organization episodes).

--Oh, it's just me. There are exceptions, but kiddy characters tend to put me off. But what you said about the story never really going anywhere is why I said once you know the premise, you can drop in in the middle or take in some of the movies. The mysteries themselves are generally pretty good if occasionally predictable.

OP is asking for

1) Police/detective anime
2) No sci-fi. 20th Century or contemporary setting preferred
3) Adult characters
4) A bit on the dark side
5) Preferably not too long

Gosick = kids
Detective Conan = kids
Chrono Crusade = supernatural
Occult Academy = supernatural + kids

Switch (2 ep OVA, and completed manga)
Monster (try the manga if the anime seems too long)
Domain of Murder (a short movie with one case)
Psycho Pass (does have a sci-fi setting but mostly focuses on real life ethics)

Yeah, Detective Conan has kids and it's long, but some of the mysteries are really mature and gruesome. They do have a lot of adult side characters. You don't need to go through 700+ episodes. Just go through the main plot ones.

OHHH SNAAAAP. GUUUURL (or boi whatever gender you are) YOU DID NOT JUST DISS GOSICK. Gosick is one of my most favorite animes. Watch it before you knock it. Good mystery and dashes of romance between the MCs here and there. The only anime I've seen that's remotely like Gosick is Dantalian no Shoka. I have been trying to find other animes similar to those two but to no avail. Try out Gosick. I got hooked on the first ep.

Would disagree. Gosick has two terrible main leads, although the overall plot is decent. I wouldn't put it in my list of detective anime because it only executes a few detective-like episodes in the beginning but then changes into a more supernatural plot. The romance was annoying too, but that's just half of the audience's opinion.
