It's all just your perception that this site of NOT a lot of 'stupid nothing to do with anything comments' actually.

There plenty of that here. but it simply has not bothered you is all, yet. Give it time :)

Ever checked out the IMdb before?

For video games, chances are you should be laughing at input that is common to YouTube. My son watches a lot of reviewers on there.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

One of the best sites for discussion of a certain topic IMO, hats off to you MAL.

On the other hand, the only way i wrap my head around the gaming industry nowadays is through user reviews on Youtube, Metactritic and personal opinions with my friends irl.

I would love a sight like this for western comics... It's so damn hard to find any good ones when you don't really know what to look for. MAL is a great site and it's forum has a COMPLETELY WHITE background, I freaking hate forums with all these annoying colours and massives sigs and all this fiddly buttons just to flip the page </rant>

But yeah IMdb is pretty good for movies and gamesradar is where I go for games.

I rarely trust video games' rating, unless they give a really low score like below 5, then I won't bother trying it. I usually tries my hands on the game because it's different from movies. There is interactivity in video games, not like watching movies. For example, a lot of people like Angry Bird while for me it's a freaking boring game that I would give 4/10 for it.

For movies, your best bet would be IMDB, the most complete movies database in the internet. I don't know about the community though, but I'm pretty sure it's similar everywhere. More members = higher chance for meeting trolls.

For video games, I always go to IGN because I'm fed up with people in Gamespot. Well, IGN seems not really different though =/

I'm actually looking for a similar site with (western) tv-shows instead of anime. Like, the list aspect of this site rather than the forums. Sadly I don't think such a site exists.

Are you looking for a database or a forum to discuss them all at? 'Cause I find it hard to think of many sites that have both. There is IMDB (for movies and tv), I guess, but I personally never really liked the forum design there. I've never checked out IGN or Gamespot because I've only heard bad things about them.

I would love to know if you find one! Let me know, I watch jsut as many hours of syndicated tv shows as I do anime.

I guess I'm the opposite then. I find these forums incredibly boring, so I only check every now and then.

It seems that 1/3 of the community comes here for self-help or some related shit. It just reeks of those high school kids that think their lives are terrible. Pretty sad.

Not to mention the hypersensitive mods that will ban you without a second thought just because you used a bit of hyperbole.

I know you can keep a list of your games here. http://backloggery.com/
I'm not a fan of how that site works though so I don't use it.

Raptr and Playfire are good for keeping track of video games you play and the achievements you get. I can't really compare them though because I've only used PF and it's too much of a hassle for me to create a new account at Raptr.

The irony, it kills me.

I can name you a similar website for books:

Just a note on this, Raptr is good because it lets you import from xfire now and you can manually imput times, it's not like myanimelist in the sense I'd like it to be, and bb kind of sucks, but that's just my opinion, I think MAL did a great job on forums/database.

I second this! Goodreads is awesome. Not just for books but graphic novels and manga. Though, my account is strictly for books. I used to put graphic novels on my list...

I discovered MAL late in 2011. I was looking for anime reviews to determine what DVDs to buy and to keep track of the animes I have. It is interesting to see other peoples opinion also. Through MAL I also discovered Crunchyroll where I can view some of the more newer and/or obscure anime series direct from Japan that haven't been released on DVD. MAL is great!

Nobody's suggested www.gamelogs.org to you yet, which is exactly what you want for videogames. It's intentionally styled after MAL e.g. so you can see just how MAL-like it is, here's my list: http://www.gamelogs.org/gamelog/ChessKitty.html

I joined in January last year and was pretty enthusiastic at first but after a short while I gave up because I think it desperately needs some kind of 'unending' category. I play a lot of games you never really finish like TF2, Osu! and Rock Band and I'd really like to be able to glance at a list of all my games like that when I want to pick what to play, but unfortunately there's just nowhere appropriate to put them. I did suggest that to them but nothing came of it so now I just have that massively-incomplete list sitting there until I decide whether to keep filling it up with everything else or not bother.

With that exception which will be less of an issue for many, it's a nice site I think, so hope that helps you (:
