What Is A Pokemon Trainer:
A Trainer collects and raises Pokemon for the sole purpose of battling them and competing against other trainers, both casually and in Tournaments and Leagues. The trainers that strive to be the best participate in Leagues, battling Gym Leaders all across the region, in hopes of earning the chance to take on the Elite Four and the right to be known as a Pokemon Master Trainer!

Trainers are not limited to battling only other Trainers. In fact, any character can battle any other character. Rangers must sometimes battle other people in the line of duty, and Researchers, Breeders and Medics can learn a lot about Pokemon by battling or observing battles. Keep in mind, however, that if a person challenges another person, and the person being challenged does not wish to battle, that person may decline.
