Yo folks,

So i'm seeing a girl and she currently believes that watching anime is a "nerdy/childish" thing to do. Pfft.. little does she know :P Anyways, I was thinking of watching a movie or first few episodes of a show with her but I need something that she'll actually be able to take seriously and enjoy watching.

She likes things like the notebook, dear john, bridesmaids, and anything with Steve Carrell. Yes, its quite a variety so you can see why i've come here; I really want to find something that she'll enjoy and maybe we could watch other shows together after :)

So far 2 options have been Spirited Away and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

grave of the fireflies (will surely cry)
clannad (great mood)
lovely complex (fun, but endearing)
kannon. (OMG)
Myself, Yourself (good story about friendship (sucky end))
Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu (defies clasification)
kimi ni todoke (classic boy meets girl)

I doubt you convince her with the usual anime melodrama. Avoid anything that contains tsundere and other otaku stuff. Try josei-esque shows, smart comedies and/or more authentic romances:

Usagi Drop
*Spice and Wolf
Kawamo wo Suberu Kaze
Hataraki Man
Kuragehime
*Paradise Kiss
*Ouran High School Host Club
Natsume Yuujinchou

Most of the popular anime movies should also work:

*Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
*Princess Mononoke
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Only Yesterday

* = have english dubs

I'd silence her with some Imouto Jiru or Kodomo no Jikan, Bible Black is too harsh.

If you going to go for ecchi, you need to go for the controversial or highly explicit, now that I think of it, Aki-Sora or Yosuga no Sora.

I LOL'd!

Seriously AnoHana might be a good pick, also some of the more serious Ghibli Movies are usually the starter for many people.

Let her try 5 centimeters per second.
It's short, but it's a very nice romance anime with a believable story.

If she thinks anime is childish, hit her with something serious. If you show her any of the regular stuff she will not be impressed, and may even think less of it now that shes seen a "real" example of why its not great.

Personally, I like to cut out people's legs from under them with heavy drama like Grave of the Fireflies. (+ infinity to this btw) Princess Mononoke is also great as you can't really look away and you get sucked into Miyazaki's epic storytelling. Also Barefoot Gen, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Only Yesterday.

You also want something short. LOGH is a good rec by the other standards but it is too long for a first timer. Movies in general work fine. Maybe a short series if she's up to it.

What is so heavy about an angsty preteen and an overly optimistic child walking home for 11 episodes with occassional peril and emotional blackmail?

I was referring to Grave of the Fireflies. I just added Tokyo 8.0, Only Yesterday, and Barefoot Gen at the end as other suggestions.

I meant a neutral-hostile first timer. My first series was Evangelion, but I was totally open to it from the start. Some (most) people are not so open or friendly to anime. But thats obvious.

and lol at having to explain myself twice in tandem on the same thread.

I'd actually go with Lisnoire's suggestions of starting off with movies. If she can be shown through something that's not longer than the movies she already enjoys, I think she can be convinced to watch a longer series.

So I'm going to second
Millennium Actress
Only Yesterday
Tokyo Godfathers

because those are close to the really romantic movies she likes.

True but we need to take the age, interests, level of sophistication, and sensibilities of the person in question into consideration when making recommendations. Sometimes that even means recommending things we personally don't care for.

Seem like a lost battle to me, but what do I know?

Like many have said, 5 Centimeters or Millennium Actress would be good choices, you can't complain about them being nerdish or childish.

What about Elfen Lied? I bet it can break any expectation. Maybe too much of a wild card, though.

Show her Nana, Ouran, Clannad, Death Note, Monster, and/or Usagi Drop if she's interested in watching. Also, I wouldn't say that her taste in movies would affect her potential taste in anime. I for one love romantic comedies in movies, but I usually hate them in anime.

But if she's not interested there's no use in trying to force it on her.. Some people just don't care for animation, and there's not crime in that..

Thanks so much guys this response has been overwhelming. We're both busy with midterms so we haven't gotten a chance to watch anything yet so you've still got time!

She is 20, pre-med with a 4.0, loves to party, shop, really book smart but doesn't quite catch subtleties all the time.. hm... She plays a high level of piano and teaches swimming lessons to autistic children.

Lol is that enough to go with?

I thought he said he tried Death Note on her and she didn't like it but I can't find that now so it may have come from a similar thread. I'd say most "popular" anime would turn her off. Death Note is nicely sophisticated would be great once she is more open to anime. Don't know that I'd start her off with a series though.

I don't see the problem. It can be considered the same as any other TV Show.

Someone I know (adult, female, about the same age as OP's girlfriend) is starting anime with Monster. Probably she won't continue it (the point isn't even getting her into anime, anyway), but from what I know she has no problem with anime TV series.
