THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I just finished the series and decided to watch the Hellsing OVA's afterwards.

So far the story is basically the same. The episode starts with Lady Hellsing's uncle hunting her down. This is seen later in the Anime, but basically the same thing happens. Alucard is awakened and he saves Hellsing from the uncle.

Next we see the scenes that open the series. The priest is at it in Cheddar, and Victoria is being held captive by him. The scenes in the OVA are much more "adult" than the series. Also, in the series Alucard asks Victoria if she wants to be a vampire before shooting her. In the OVA we see Alucard simply asks her if she is a virgin before firing (she answers yes), and asks her if she wants to be a vampire only afterwards as she is dieing from the gunshot wound.

The next big thing is the introduction of Iscariot. I do not remember learning his name in the series, nor do I remember learning the details of his background which are explain here in the OVAs.

The episode ends with a battle between Alucard and Iscariot. During the build up to this battle we get to see Victoria hand out some serious ass whopping unlike anything see in the series.

Great episode. This series seems like it will be very good. The animation quality is up over the series, and the story seems to be more concise and adult. I wish that the OVA series was longer so that some of the plot that is drawn out in the series could be redone here, but asides missing that it is very well done. The adultness of the series is also enjoyable, although sometimes there is more blood than I would anticipate as been normal... lol.

Alucard & Anderson are the best in this Episode
They were both awesome & the Guy at the end made me very curious

That was pretty awesome.
I don't like the Hellsing TV series so much but Ultimate is really nice.
The fight at the end was cool. But that Anderson made me sick.

I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a widely appreciated OVA.

The animation was really off (be it in the calm scenes or the action scenes, very lazily animated), soundtrack was kitsch, characters were stupid and acting illogically (the cop chick is really one of the blandest and stupidest anime characters I've ever seen), story doesn't look too great...

I sure hope the next episodes will be better ; I just don't get how such a low-budget, badly directed, poorly animated and lazily written OVA!! got to be 35th in MAL, with no less than 2595 people rating it a perfect 10/10...

The only thing I've really enjoyed in this episode was Norio Wakamoto's astonishing voice acting, at least, this guy never fails to entertain.

They are neither plants nor animals.
They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as Mushi. Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them.

Good first episode, maybe a little too fast in the turn of the events but it still better than Hellsing in term of rythm.
The music was really awesome, not really spectacular but it fit perfectly with the fighting scene and it give it more rythm.
The animation was okay.

A long, long time ago I remember seeing the first couple episodes of the Hellsing TV series and thinking, "wow, this is terrible." And this is back when I thought stuff like Trigun constituted good anime.

Years later I decide to try out Hellsing Ultimate because a highly rated action OVA sounds like fun. After viewing that first episode however, I'm kind of pissed I wasted time and space downloading this crap.

It would be one thing if the action, apparently the only selling point, was good, but since it isn't there isn't much left here. The story is crap, I don't know if you can even call the "characters" characters considering that might imply that they are more than a series of drawings that look awfully shoddy at times, and the blood splatters are bad even for an anime. If I can manage to force myself to watch another fifty minutes of this I'll look for improvement in the second episode, but I can't imagine I'll be able to.

To each is his own.

BTW, the first OVA is probably my least favorite (it wasn't all that great in the pacing department). But they get better as they go on.

But I think this reviewer pretty much nailed it:

This is very different than the one aired on TV. I don't like the characters attitude compared to the older one. The story development went smooth and didn't leave out a lot of chunks of background info. The artwork is a lot better in this one also, this artwork looks a lot more sharper and detailed.

At last. Hellsing as it meant to be. TV was fine but nothing special. Now we have a movie for those who loved manga and for such action filled manga, animating and colouring will do good. It's whether you like author's style or not: if you don't, first OVA has everything you might hate about it.

The Story sounds very interesting and the animation is well too. The only thing that was not good was the sound, the things that I expected to be loud were actually very quiet (Stabs, Gunshots,...). But Although I think this will be a very interesting and good show.

Pretty much yeah, the animations were done much better than the 13 episode anime, and the story.. Well, the first anime practically had no story, the episodes didn't really connect to each other if i recall correctly. The OVA follows the manga story from start to finish.

This is the first time I follow the "Hellsing" franchise :

The first episode had a good impression but I didn't feel that the story will be "deep", so far we have two Churchs (catholic and protestant) and a secret organization who is "creating" vampires. Protestant have Alucard: a bad ass hitman vampire who doesn't die by simply cutting the head, the catholic side has some superhuman regenerating old freak who likes to play with two blades.

I lol at some comedy part, when the "police girl" was running from the ghouls and saying "they are going to rape me !"

This episodes reminds me so much of Highschool of the Dead :')

Holy shit. Now this is what you call GAR. I can see that this OVA series will be 100% better than the first one. First of all, the plot moves damn fast. Only episode 1 and a lot just happened? Not one moment was this episode boring. Second, the animation improved by tons. Now this is what i wanted to see all along.

Okay so from what I understood, there are 3 big organizations. Hellsing, Iscariot, and the group that's manipulation the low level vampires. Iscariot has that badass Anderson, Hellsing has the more badass Alucard. I wonder who's the ace of the third group. I'm so curious.

Victoria becoming 1/2 vampire was pretty cool too although I'm wondering why she didn't drink Alucard's blood. Surely she will become one of the true vampires if she did but nah, she decided to love her human side more. :(

I really enjoyed this episode. There's less drama with Victoria becoming a vampire which I like. They also show that she is not week which they did in the other series. They go much further into personal background right away which I like. Plus there is a story unlike the other one. Over all this one PWNS!!!

If you don't understand the simple hints of Alucard's true origin that they said in this episode, or who he's based off, then were you watching this?

And yeah, I agree with the idea that if you don't really enjoy this, you despise it.

That was absolutely amazing! It was everything great I've heard about it and even more... So much better than the (non-OVA) anime series (though I liked it as well)! To say the least, I was very pleased with this episode.

Graphics highlights:
>Engravings on the guns, blood writings, patches, etc
>Camera movement!!
>Backgrounds, flooring/walling/etc details
>Lighting
>Vehicle head/tail-lights and other motion
>Air distortion caused by helicopter

Storyline:
>Better order of events than the anime series
>Story was told more clearly
>_Much_ better pace than anime series

Other:
>Music was astounding
>Chibi humor was done very well without going overboard
>Vampire description/complexity was excellent (most-probably credit to the manga, which I will begin reading shortly)

Perfect Episode; 6/5 ★★★★✶

Yes I agree with nearly everything you neatly laid out.

The reason Hellsing Ultimate is so good and much better than the old TV series is that Ultimate is a very faithful page for page direct adaptation of the original manga.

So after being mindblowned by the awesomeness of the Hellsing manga i decided to finally pick this one up. I watched the first Hellsing anime about 7 years ago and because i didn't even know that it was based on a manga i didn't know what to think about it other than the awesome music and pretty cool animation (the only anime that i had seen before was Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust). After reading the manga i realised how it butchered the story with boring filler, so when i found out about this new version that was going to be thousand times better than the first one my expectations were a bit high.

I just watched the first episode and this here is my 2 cents:
The opening scene with Integra Hellsing and his uncle was an interesting start for the series. One thing bothered me about the uncle though, when did he turn german? Anyway a nice little recap to the original past. It was really short though, but who gives 2 sh*ts, were here to see BIG GUNS and BLOOD and BODYPARTS!

Then we get to the church. I noticed that the blood is made with CG and it looks a bit silly. Seras gets introduced and they added a little rape to the scene. Strange to make the head vampire even more evil by adding that. You'd think killing the small towns population and turning them into ghoul's would be evil enough, but nooo: He's also an evil rapist.

Alucard comes and gets shot to hell. Big plus for the animation team to show his ripcage and not just covering everything with blood. The gun animation was OK. It's always good to see whats written in the side of the gun. But the music. The music...sucks. Its like from a bad action film with stupid electrical noises and such. Some rock-music with a touch of metal would work a lot better, or some munk-chorus that rhymes with the Priest's character. It bothered me so much it took a lot of impact from the scene.

The funny bit with Sera's was ok at best. Some of the lines were delivered a bit awkwardly, but everyones doing a decent job. I see they skipped a bit from the manga and went straight for the next vampire hunt. I loved the way Alucard just shoots his body full of holes with everyone of them intentionally missing his heart. These 2 characters only had one line and the rest were grunts. I guess were here for the action and not the characters. Alucard delivers a few awkward lines on the roof. The VA should put a bit more effort into his character.

Lolling at Andersons engrish.

Victoria killing ghouls was pretty entertaining. Especially the sliding she did while firing her rifle. The fight with Alucard and Anderson could have been better. And the stupid music was also in the background ugh...
They got pretty gory with Integras body guards which was surpising how they always covered every gory part with more blood. Actual decapitation and arms flying off. Nice.

And the ending lines were again a bit awkward. Maybe i just imagined them to come out differently while reading the manga.

And thats that episode. Maybe the music will be better in the next one...

TL;DR: Pretty good compared to the first version, but the music was godawful.

But that intention was in the manga, it's not like they've added it on their own. Maybe only made it a little bit more emphasized by grabbing.

This episode was kinda boring considering it had about 50 minutes. The story that happened here could be easy done in 24. I also disliked that they threw random terms around and didn't bother explaining anything. I'd be satisfied with at least a single word or two. Also the characters felt kinda awkward at times. Seriously, who the hell smiles like that all the time even during a battle? And wtf is with Integra's look? I have nothing against the fact that estrogen haven't seen her even from a plane but what's the point of making her female when she looks and acts 100% male? On the other hand, this shows something that's VERY rarely (unfortunatelly) seen in vampire stories. Actual young vampire making her first steps. I seriously love that. Either way, I'm still continuing to watch because people say it gets better later on and after the failure that was Blood-C (I just hope the film will be better) I'm in a serious need of a well-done vampire story... yeah, that's the main reason, sue me.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. It's cool and stylish like a John Woo movie, and has some great action scene's and wonderful over the top voice acting. But the characters are a bit flat, specially Victoria. I remember her being a lot smarter in the TV series. Here she's nothing more than a dumb, big breasted chick.

I have to see a couple of more chapters to get a feel for this.

Ammm, actually Seras was a stupid useless fan-service in the TV-series. OVA1 is basically TV episode 1 + sniper training with a murder couple + some action with Anderson, yet better. What was Seras's achievements in episode 1 of the old show? She shot Alucard (who was actually her ally) for no apparent reason and never was able to shoot at the evil vampire priest or at least one of his minions. What an idiot of a cop. In Ultimate she has done a reasonable thing and shot the priest plus his ghouls while being nice to Alucard. Also TV Seras was full of fail during her sniper practice, while OVA counterpart killed the target with her first bullet.
So why exactly do you think Seras is dumber in OVA? I can't see the logic here.

just rewatched this after funimation announced the BD and will have english voices as well as the returning cast.

it's been 2.5 years now since i last watched the series.

i also remember how the fight scenes are tons better than the original anime.

this is one of the very very few anime's were the english cast is on par if not arguably better than the japanese cast.

and wow the animation is godly, i just wished the voice is as clear as the special effects since the english dub tend to sound lower then suddenly louder out of nowhere.

there's a reason why Hellsing Ultimate is one of the best OVA's ever made.

it's like the jump from Fullmetal Metal Alchemist to Brotherhood.

the former is good, but the latter is much much better and more complete.

and wow it's been awhile since i last heard Crispin Freeman.

i remember his voice when i played Xenosaga Ep I-III last year.

good times :)

although i still wish Yasushi Ishii at least made contributions in this film.

he has one of the redeeming features of the original anime.

can't wait to get up to date in this series!!

I could have done without the silly omake-like scenes. The seriousness of the first show should have been retained.

Switching from the "hole in my chest remembering my parents mutilated raped corpses" to a comedic dream scene really grates badly. The first show also always maintained its animation style, it didnt go omake like when she see's him siting by her bed when she wakes up after her turning. Integra feels less..professional and strong willed with that smirk/grin and ridiculous dialogue. Dont like Exposition being thrown at us, it can be done more naturally. Theres a slight shallowness here with the characters.

someone said the animation was better in this one? it has its weak places and good spots. When its good its better than the first show but it keeps doing that silly omake thing. Maintain the art style's integrity!

I still prefer the previous animation but if it had the grit and viciousness expressed by the good parts of the new shows animation...when it decides not to be lazy, it would have been even better.

its like they said "lets put in more adult scenes...BUUUUUT we'll put in silly immature moments too!" "lets create better animation but use it only 40% of the time" the adult scenes would have worked better with the seriousness. Lets

its a bad direction to take. If i wanted to watch "horror" type shows with omake comedy moments, i'd watch Soul Eater.

its like those sketched ending scenes in the first show with the author (the "spirit in her gun") talking to her were taken and made a part of the show itself.
instead of going "oh yeah thats a nice grope scene" instead we'd be thinking "oh christ that sick fuck, this is terrible". instead of her looking to the corner and blushing when groped, she'd be disgusted and horrified by this THING (just like when he grabbed her from behind and was telling her that he didnt want to make new vampies, now that had terror in it)

differences in handling the franchise, both the old and the new show are good in places and bad in places.i just really feel the ideal hellsing was somewhere inbetween this show and the last one.

Still though, i can enjoy the new show too.
