Wow~ definitely worth the wait for this one. Of the shorts I've seen so far, this was the best by far. Watanabe is such a skilled director. I thought it was just beautiful~ everything about it was great. I'll even admit, that last part made me cry a little ^^

Ahh, you beat me by two minutes~ =P

Just a couple moments I didnt like, the bike chase with cartoonish facial reactions from the policeman, and the whole grenade blowing up a car thing. They took me out of the tale.

The rest was great though. Watanabe needs to branch out into live action movies. Dude takes too long between anime productions, maybe he can direct films during those breaks. If Takashi Miike can make a dozen movies a year, anything's possible.

I had been waiting for this a long time since we don't get to see anything by Watanabe very often and I loved it. I wish he did stuff more often. It was a really sweet story and Yoko Kanno made excellent music that just fit perfectly.

If only the rest of Genius Party was this amazing... I really loved this, though. I almost cried. :x It usually takes at least like ten episodes of an anime and then a death or something really sad to make me cry, but it seriously almost cried after just 14 minutes in this.

I think my brain blew up.

Its just a time-stuttering affect to emphasise the fleeting moment, to slow it down so we can enjoy the upsetting yet lovely resolution to the tale.

In my opinion, it was the worst of the set... I liked Genius Party and Happy Machine a lot more because they were really more original. For me, Baby Blue seemed to be done by Makoto Shinkai but in a cheapest way... But, it's just my opinion...

Shinichiro Watanabe is on a different level.

He had two shorts before this, and while I thought "Detective Story" was okay, "Kid's Story" (granted, he only directed it) is the only work by him that genuinely sucked.

But here, he made an absolutely brilliant short, and in a genre where it's extremely difficult to come up with a good story over 13/26 episodes, let alone fourteen minutes. Incredible.

I really liked the main characters in this episode. Some scenes from this reminded me of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo.

It reminded me of Makoto Shinkai too, but it didn't seem like a cheap rip-off to me. It had a bit of a different feeling and although this short is only 15 minutes long, it grasped me and made me feel really emotional, something most short films can't do.

My theory is that it was a represantation of memory fading, since that idea was brought up earlier in the ep, would work well thematically.

I liked this short. It managed to keep my attention throughout the entire 15 minutes, something most of the other short stories in Genius Party weren't able to do.

Wonderful slice of life short with beautiful art, such detail almost felt like it was filmed rather then drawn (kept pausing to look at the skies!!!).

Music fit perfectly and enjoyed the deadpan banter (first time skipping class, blowing up the staff office etc). Not particularly original storywise, but the way it was told more then made up for it!!! :)

I understand what you mean but, probably because it was a little out of character, I enjoyed those parts all the more.

not one of my favs no...I thought it was OK. It was the most mainstream of all the shorts in the GP collection, and had a pretty 'safe' romance + school + slice of life formula. But yea it does it much better than those long 12-24 episode series.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Yeah, I saw strong similarities to 5 Centimeter Per Second here too - the aspect of former childhood friends/more-than-friends being torn apart in high school, the nuanced dialogue, the very particular framing of scenes (high detail to skies, backgrounds). All executed very well. I definitely agree with the poster who said the director should work in live-action. Great stuff here.

There's nothing formulaic by the way in this short film @above poster. I think you missed the big picture.

Maybe...but read your first para again :P
I thnk you mistook me for saying its cliched. I actually meant its based on a pretty safe concept i.e its not as daring as the other shorts. But thats not necessarily a bad thing.

The least artistic and thought-provoking in the collection, but I liked the laid-back atmosphere, the female character and this wouldn't have been a Watanabe work without some crazy explosions.

I was not seeing them in order, but this would have made a beatiful end to this series of shorts.
I probably regret this post by now.

Probably my favorite out of the seven shorts. Whist being the less “peculiar” of all the Genius Party bunch, it managed and set itself as a nice story; and such feat is quite difficult considering all romances are pretty much based on a mostly unchanging formula, which makes many of them come off as a rip-off or copycat of one another.

Gratefully, Baby Blue sets itself apart and makes a wonderful tale in a run-time of solely 15 minutes. Yoko Kanno’s lovely sound made the experience even more impressive. It was touching; it was nostalgic.

It, without doubt, set the perfect end to this compilation of works.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

Chopin Etude Op 10 No 3.

Every scene and sentence spoken developed the characters.

Invoking that level of attachment to the characters within 14 minutes.

I love bittersweet endings.

Really great final episode, was quite a good finisher for the all the shorts! Good separated stories in general but they did really top it off with something fascinating!

In general great stories each on their own! 7/10

The whole thing was pretty solid overall. Limit circle was complete bullshit but all the rest had interesting vues and ideas on display. Especially liked Yuasa and Watanabe stuff.

8/10 would be a 9 if limit circle wasnt there.

Though not as intricate or "deep" as the others, this is the only short that lived up to the Genius name, not that the others were sub-par, mind you. It really took me by surprise how immense of an impact this one left me with. This is what 5 Centimeters Per Second should have been.

Certainly this and the Masaaki Yuasa's Happy Machine were the best from whole anthology.

Overall the anthology was pretty bad. Either really pretentious or just badly executed. Hopefully Beyond has better stories.

Liked how this entire story came about because Shou-kun didn't want to be forgotten after he moved. Interesting how we didn't hear anything about the consequences of the grenade. I could've gone without the whole grenade stint honestly. It wasn't necessary to make this story likable. The ending was heartwarming, I guess

And still, Bill will live on.
He will befriend the next inhabitants of the earth, beings of light who revere him as a god.
And Bill will outlive them all... for millions and millions of years...exploring, learning, living,
until the earth is swallowed beneath his feet.
Until the sun is long since gone.
Until time loses all meaning and the moment comes that he knows only the positions of the stars
and sees them whether his eyes are closed or open.
Until he forgets his name and the place where he'd once come from.
He lives and he lives until all of the lights go out.
