Quentin Tarantino direction or I just don't want to see it made. Plain as feckin' that!

And "A real degree of faithfulness", what the hell is that? Either you're faithful or not. You can't have a "A real degree of faithfulness" when you cheat on your spouse and you can't have a "A real degree of faithfulness" when your doing an adaptation.

Ugh... now I'm up in arms.

As much as I love QT (watched Pulp Fiction over 20 times, Kill Bill over 50) he would rape Cowboy Bebop. He would turn in into some sort of bloodshed movie that drags on and on.. and that isn't what Cowboy Bebop is. No doubt he would cast Samuel L. Jackson for some part, even though none of the main characters are black, and NO DOUBT he would cast some has-been lame ass star to play Spike in order to "boost" their career the levels of stupidity that it has never reached before.

-.- In other words, no just no. I don't feel like hearing Spike say fuck every other word.
I'm back.

And you're going to tell me the Matrix was better?

Neo: "I know kung-fu."

Give me a bloody break. Personally, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs show more directing prowess than the Matrix series that abused the "bullet time" concept. The best part of the movie was when Neo died... then they ruined it by him coming back to life.

This will surprise you, but only The Matrix used 'bullet time', the sequels didnt. And you totally didnt 'get' anything about the movie at all if you're complaining about Neo coming back. I've spent years explaining these movies to people who werent paying attention, but I have never seen anyone complain about Neo coming back, so I'm not even going to bother talking about something so simple. At least complain about the acting or something valid.

I, and many others, get more out of The Matrix than I ever have out of any of Tarantino's movies. I like his movies, but The Matrix movies changed entertainment all over the world, its after-effects are still reverberating today, shit even Kill Bill probably wouldnt have been made if it werent for the Wachowskis beginning the trend of putting Hollywood actors through martial arts training. Those movies inspired me waaay back in 99 to start reading more philosophy, which inspired me to read and watch other shit, and now I make the old me of '98 look like a bumbling idiot. (ok, so I'm still an idiot, but I'm not bumbling anymore).

You cant fault a movie for straddling the thin line between blockbuster entertainment and food-for-thought, the movies were ambitious and tried something important. The Wachowskis took some of the greatest ideas in philosophy and literature, tied it with their love for anime and gave us something new. And it inspired other filmmakers to do the same, we're now getting comic book movies that are attempting 'realism' instead of the 'comic' look they were before '99, another Superman was finally made inspired by Revolution's flying scenes, stuff like Solaris and The Fountain was given the greenlight, all because The Matrix showed the studios they could make thought-provoking stuff but still make a shit load of money at the same time.

So there.

Dont even get me started on the utter joke that was Tarantino's continuing deteriorating fixation on emulating the past instead of trying anything new, that was Kill Bill. A laughable premise of Uma freakin' Thurman kicking 'ass' with more laughably trite dialogue, its just your average culture--destroyer movie, like Coppola's Lost In Translation, continuing to perpetuate Edward Said's 'Orientalism' theory, making Asia 'exotic' and inaccessible, its a complete waste of time that you'd better spend watching all the movies Tarantino wants to so badly riff off of, like 36th Chamber of Shaolin, etc. I said Jackie Brown was his best work, his most mature and accomplished, but even that is looking backwards instead of forwards. I was hoping Grindhouse was his zenith, but nope, inglorious Bastards is a quasi-remake of another 70's movie. Seeing talent regurgitate the past is really sad.

and on another note, the optimism surrounding this is astounding... are that many people expecting this to work out?

And as for the sound track, I would rather they not just hire Kanno and give her control or use the old soundtrack. This is an issue with appropriateness. Kanno's work might or might not even be suitable for this work anymore depending on the director, the cast, the story, and the stage.

Her work was really one of the defining factors of Cowboy Bebop but like I originally said, more than her music, it was the fact that everything just fit together very, very well.

If they just layered Kanno's work over another story with another cast and another director's vision, then it'd be out of place if it doesn't have good cohesion with the other elements.

I wouldn't mind a couple reworked homage pieces, though.

Though you are right about everything, to be perfectly honest, I don't care if it'd fit or not.If they can get The Seatbelts back together I'd buy the OST(s) and be done with it.

Also, Tarantino for Bebop? People are seriously suggesting that?

I was actually suggesting Tarantino for a different anime adaptation. I just think it'll be cool to see him work on anime in general.

@ Cihan: Comparing a Tarantino film to Matrix isn't fair. Tarantino's genre is (mostly) film noir while the Matrix is sci-fi.
Other than that if you don't like his recent films don't watch them then.

Now let's not get off topic anymore. >_>

The idea of Tarantino and bebop makes me laugh. I like him, but not for Bebop :)
I liked the Matrix movies, but when I saw the first one, it did feel like it borrowed a lot from Dark City, which came out first. And, while I personally prefer Dark City (I like its film noir feel and art deco style over the more futuristic look of the Matrix) both are good movies :)

As for Bebop, Kanno is a great composer, I think if they hired her, she would be able to come up with something new that would fit whatever direction they decide to go with the movie, while still retain the flavor of the anime ost :)

Heck, I would just love a Seatbelts reunion too, lol :)

I didnt start the comparison in the first place, dont have a go at me! I like Tarantino, but think he can do much better.

I'm not the biggest fan of the idea, but if any anime can be given an American live-action treatment, it's Cowboy Bebop. It already has a very American vibe about it, and the character designs are realistic enough to make the transition to live action well. Still, I'm gonna remain pessimistic about this. It could be severely f*cked up.

I love the series, the fact that it has not been touch (sequel or live action film has been made) is a reason why I love it. Now that it is an idea, I hope it's like the evangelion live action, we can see possible artwork for it, but it never will happen.

Dear Hollywood Gods,

Please, do your job. Please don't fuck up my all-time favorite anime. Please respect your source materal, but have the wisdom to know when to deviate from it. Please don't cast Lindsay Lohan as Faye. Please get Yoko Kanno to do the music.

Amen.

Your right, the music was great in the series, it really set the mood in certain scenes. Hopefully they would get Yoko Konno's unqine style to do the music.

Chances are it could be good, or it could be bad. Will depend on who's making it and who's in it. If they keep true to it or try to "add" (aka destroy) it.

I honestly don't see it being bad, however it turns out (if it does). I just don't know if it will be on par with the anime/manga. If its not at that level, then I'd prefer they don't make it. But I'd watch it regardless.

That being said, the Producer's resume of works isn't that bad. But its certainly not all great either. I think we'll get a decent movie, but nothing close to being on par with the anime/manga.

I'm honestly more scared about the Dragon Ball movie, not that I'm into the show or anything.

My god Cihan... you take yourself way too seriously. And your love of that piece of shyte movie that was as revolutionary as a Firestone tire... well... kudos to you for your loyalty of something that horrible. I really wish I was as easily entertained as you.It had the acting of a secondary school musical about beavers in Britain. Happy? I mentioned its acting quality. Go watch a Charlton Heston film, at least he put some emotion in his acting.

I've spent years explaining... no wait, I moved on from that horrific film, until now to which it would seem I got something from it... and upset stomach at the bastardisation of the concept o film. If you think that horrible movie was good you need to go watch some classics because the Matrix was as entertaining as cirrhosis of the liver.

As for only being used only in The Matrix and not the sequels, well... lick it up butter cup.

We may disagree about Tarantino, sure. But to attack me directly and more or less say I'm stupid for not liking your silly little film about a bunch of pill popping AI chasers, you had this coming.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Mr Hammy McHammison really was emotional, yup.

Ah yeah, they used it once in Reloaded. So that's a total of 3 times the bullet time special affect was used in The Matrix trilogy. They totally 'abused' it, yep.

I 'had it coming'!? Are you shitting me? You're now attacking me for no reason! Please re-read the damn thread you crazy person you. You mention Tarantino for Bebop, I say no good, then you start bashing The Matrix for some inexplicable reason (not even bothering to tie your rant back into Bebop adaptation) complaining about the entire point of the movie and stating false facts, so I just corrected you. Bullet time is used minimally, not 'abused', end of story.

Thank god your not a barrister... all your clients would be poor. Did you not state, as I quote above, that they "didn't" use it, or do my eyes deceive me? I think the record proves in my favour sir. As as such, your accountability for expertise of this film lacking.

And rather than take up another post, quick edit.

Better than an overpaid actor who has 2 whole emotions, surprise and confused. Next thing you will tell me that Speed and "There's a bomb on the bus!" was as Oscar Award worthy job.

You began the stupid debate with 'they totally abuse bullet time!', and my count was off by 1, big deal. You're the one that's derailed the thread.

Back to Bebop before the mods wave their stick.

Read page 5 of this thread and show me an instance of where you're talking about Cowboy Bebop when replying to my opinion that Tarantino isnt fit to direct the adaptation.

That's right, you're not.

Partly my fault for humouring you that the thread's gone off topic, so I'll just ignore your hysterical keyboard bashing now.

@ Sukuko and Cihan: Your post was more detailed (seriously 4 paragraphs?) and (didn't like your last paragraph) so I just aimed my previous post at just you sorry. Either way both of you shouldn't be comparing these directors' movies as they are different genres altogether.

Hollywood is running out of ideas and this shows it. It's nice that they are showing interest in other countries' media anyways.

Now prediction time: I say either Rurouni Kenshin or Blood for the next adaptation.

Blood (or shitty Blood+) probably more likely considering Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer's protege's involvement in that. Kenshin's too Japanese. Unless Tom Cruise is allowed in it as an American who does all the hard work while Kenshin stands on the sidelines with an injured arm or something. ('cause you know, we need a caucasian in the story so we can relate to those weird foreigners!)

Here's another question about Bebop: do they follow the jist of the series' ending? I would talk spoilers but MAL has this annoying habit of having threads for post-release type discussion but people get 'spoiled' anyway.

Can we talk spoilers guys? It's been a decade since its been out and anybody who hasnt seen Bebop has no reason to be in here anyway.

XDDDDDD Oh, Kenshin... I could see it. Maybe. But, I understand, and I would abhore the bringing in of Tom Cruise, or the like! XD Still... Oh... That made my day. =3

I'm just dandy with the spoilers. Daryl spoiled me long ago!! (Curse, you!) I'm half-way through the series... I can live. Meh. I don't think I could bring anything special to the table, but maybe you all can with the spoiler warning removed.

The thing is though, even the Japanese suck a lot of the time at adapting manga to live action. At this point, all I care about is who's directing, writing and producing, doesnt matter where they're from anymore. Although if a story is set in Japan, then I'd like it kept that way and not have all the Asians magically replaced.

If you look at the Hollywood trend of J-horror movies, what have they changed in the transition from Japan to USA other than the races of the characters? I mean, really? Did they provide new unique twists on the source material? Not really, they just Americanized it, and its depressing, insulting and just creepy hegemonious hijinks. :(

I cant think of any actor to play Spike. (oO)

If I was directing and felt like being daring, I'd cast Asano Tadanobu ...

Yeah really, if anything I think they made the films more confusing for many. The only one I really liked was Pulse. ^_^

Now, as long as I'm still predicting I'm adding Lupin to the list.

Kenshin TV/manga is too silly for it to be made into a film.Maybe the OVA, but the TV? no way.

Of course they could do it but so many things would be changed/cut, they might as well make an original Samurai movie.

I can't think of any actors that could successfully play the bebop crew.I mean Ed? hahaha yeah right.

Wow... this is shocking...
Well~ My opinion will have to wait till I actually see the final project~
Though Hopefully it won't end up like another Eva live action thats been in the air for like the last 5 yearsXD

Well said my friend^.^
I would only accept if it was perfect an every way which is physically impossible~
So if they value their lives the better not touchXD

I was thinking Berserk would make a good live action movie thoughO.o
Not that they lazy guy has finished the series yet though lol...

Hopefully, they choose some less famous actors that will actually play their role instead of slur their speech together just to get another pay check. They also better sound like Spike and everyone else. Since he directed the Matrix it should be pretty decent, but then again our American Movie Industry has really fallen on hard times. I havent seen a decent movie in a loooong time.

He didnt. We should make this clear: the guy the article is quoting is just an executive producer, he's not going to be making the creative decisions on this movie, so at the moment we dont really have much to go on when we're judging this project, nothing but the fact that it's going to be Americanized.

All the money in my wallet bets that this will fail. I've seen this same scenario before, except with videogames and the movie industry - it'll be a watered down american blockbuster, compensating quality with special effects.

Unfortunately there isn't a writer or director attached yet, but with some new forward momentum coming from last week's announcement, I don't think it will take too long.

I like Keanu, I really do, but only in moderation. Having him anywhere near this adaptation is giving me flashbacks of Johnny Mnemonic for some reason.

This is gonna be a glorious Mario Brothers level trainwreck that wont do anime DVD companies any favours. They want the masses to like anime!

edit: of course this is very early days, so it still isnt a lost cause. Lots of cast and crew get rearranged in the early stages of a film production, so... (Nic Cage was seriously gonna be Superman for a while, lol)

The idea of Keanu as Spike makes my soul weep with despair. I really hope this is a rumor that does not pan out.
