Loved this one. I'm sure Kino really wanted to help because the freedom to fly hits close to home for her. Love that piece from the soundtrack, "He is Speed and I am Balance". So nice sounding :)

Being a physicist myself I really connected with the fact that if you dont do research which gives immediate results your research isnt worth looking at. But true discoveries/innovations happen when you pursue knowledge itself.
What an ep.. :)

I think the point of this episode was that Kino didn't believe it would work, but still helped her.

The townspeople were against her because they didn't believe what she tries to do is possible. Kino had the same belief, but she still helped her, just in case and just because it's nice to help.

It tells you that you don't need to be convinced of something yourself to show support; sometimes it's okay to just trust the vision of someone else.

I was waiting for a cruel twist near the ending and it never came. Maybe I'm just used to this show to be depressing, or bittersweet at best. This was surprisingly, and weirdly optimistic.

But yeah, as you all have already pointed it out, human nature was still the obstacle. Even Kino was almost not an exception in this story, as apparently she only encouraged Nimya on a whim. Or because she shared Nimya's desires, or she's because she's open minded, or because she's just a nice person. Or all of the above.

I didn't enjoy this episode as much as the others but it was still neat, it's funny how a bird statue was blocking her from flying.

Beautiful episode. I really enjoyed Nimya.

Her fiancee was a moron, though. "I just want you to be an ordinary life". If you want to be a boring unimaginative person, don't try to drag others with you.

I really liked this episode. It was so nice and lovely. Especially after how dark and grim the last few episodes were. The Wright Bros aping heroine was really cool. It had a low stakes but compelling story. And honestly not to say the Coliseum story wasn't great too. But I was more bothered by the townsfolk trying to dismantle her plane. Than any of the brutality in that two parter.

I think since they've become such a morally ambiguous figure as the series goes on. Episodes like this that emphasize Kino's ability to positively effect the world. Without some sort of Twilight Zone ironic twist. Feel very necessary at this juncture. When all you do is dark cautionary tales. Eventually the audience is too on guard for it. You have to slip in the surprisingly pleasant ones too. Which was well addressed at the end with Kino and Hermes is discussion. Like Kino we the audience have become too jaded to the show's universe. And most people probably didn't expect that plane to fly.

As someone said, a story about sticking to your dreams even though nobody else believes in them is nothing new, yet this episode managed to do it splendidly.

Some people have said that this wasn't as introspective as the others, seemingly because the ending was happy, but I'm not sure I agree.
The underlying theme seems to be how sometimes small coincidences can have profound effect. Something trivial as getting some encouragement at the right time in a world of doubters can change everything. To Nimya, Kino changed everything, but for Kino it was almost an unconscious action, as we learn Kino didn't really believe or understand her either.
It is also about how that change changes society, but not as much as might be expected. They incorporate it as another form of magic, their views of themselves and how the world works might not have changed at it's core.

It is also a nice parallel to episode 4, in it's theme of escaping from the world you previously lived in, but different in it's conclusion.

Probably one of the best episode so far, promoting the human thinking and spirit. I halfly expected her to fall down and die for this story to end in bittersweet way but it wasn't bad this way either.

Touching story, really.

Great episode. Hard work pays off, I think that's the message of this one. Not as thought-provoking and philosophical as the previous episodes but still good. I am glad Nimya was able to make her dream come true!

It was nice seeing Kino not so stoic for once (her struggling to stay awake when the chief was talking about economics xD), and nice having a happy ending for once.
Not sure how to interpret Hermes' comment when Namiya hugs Kino... am I reading something sexual here?

These humana learn to fly stories in anime are always mundane stuff but they never fail to amaze me anyway.

Also nice twist that the narrator changed here.

"I want you to be a ordinary wife..."Welppp the boyfriend sucks bad. Well I guess the timing of the series contributes to the culture beliefs. Glad we got a happy episode :) I love Nimyas name.

Waaah, I nearly cried when she said 'Everything was right. The calculations, experiments and my life...they weren't wasted!' D: Cute episode.

That line almost had me in tears, that was so beautiful. She was looked at for being weird, etc and then she proved them all wrong

This time I'm going to owe some explanation, it's not that there aren't some minor ones, but taking the general context, there's not a line we can draw.
I think the only thing I can think of is that all human beings want their life to make sense, to have a goal and the girl in this episode was to fly, she works her whole life and had several experiences to culminate in her flying and that we will have many people who give up on their dreams and many people who will put you down for you to give up, but we must move on.

PT-BR

I thought the aircraft would crash or fall apart at some point, but looks like there was no subversion of expectations after all. Nimya really did build the first functioning aircraft in this universe, very impressive. Stark contrast from how dark the previous episodes were.
