Well, first bought manga was Idol Dreams, which has pink pages, but my mom bought it for me at a book fair in my middle school. I didn't know what manga is at the time. I just wanted it because, it looked fun to read and it looked like a comic.
My FIRST manga I bought and saved money for is Beauty Pop volumes 5 and 8. So glad I bought them. I really love the series.
For me the guy who ran the shop I went to recommend Full Metal Alchemist. He said people come in all the time for recommendations and he uses that to gauge what they might like in a manga. :D Super cool guy~

It's not the first I "bought" but the first copy of anything I got a physical copy of was volume 1 of GTO when it was first coming out in the US while I was a kid. My mom thought it looked cool and knew I was into "that anime stuff" so she got it randomly.
The first I bought was probably volume 2, and from then I started being a buyfag with what little money a kid could manage to scrape up.
Well, for me it would have to be one piece volume 42. Beggining of the Enies Lobby battles so it was an interesting, and some might tell i was pretty late into manga collection game but 40 volumes later im doing pretty good. =)
At the time I just recently read Eden and I fell in love with it but was sad to find out it doesn't have a active fanbase so I didn't think I could support them somehow but then by chance I saw the newest Eden volume in a manga store and bought it without even giving it a second thought and I have been avidly collecting volumes of my favorite manga's since then ^^
Disgaea 2, saw it on a shelf at a random F.Y.E. and had to buy that shit. I later found volume 2 somewhere else in another F.Y.E. still on the hunt for those last 2 volumes damn it. This slowly led to my eventual small collection that cost me so far around 400 dollars. I was kinda into anime before this, but really this was what really got me into it for some reason, not sure exactly why though.
