It's like the difference between Windex and any other glass cleaner: there's barely any. true, they do have the same basic meaning but note that the word "anime" was first used by the japanese to describe all animated visual material. (if i remember correctly it's originated from the french word dessin animé, basically meaning cartoon). because of that, majority of people started to refer solely to japanese animation as "anime". i suppose you already knew all of this, but just to throw this in here, "animé" (know as anime thanks to the japanese) is simply "animation" in french. so basically anime could be used to refer to ALL animation, but because of society, the word is currently a statement used over japanese cartoons as we know them. cartoon is a much wider concept than anime. look at it like this; the word cartoon is the jar, and anime is like one of many materials being stored in the jar. at least this is what i see from it.. |
