Uber Matrix fan here, but did anyone feel a Matrix Revolutions vibe from this anime?

Ohms = squiddies
Messed up world in both films
Gold field = gold Matrix vision
Neo carried away by squiddies = Nausicaa carried by ohms.

Weird!

Anyway, classic anime. Joe Hisaishi is to Miyazaki as John Williams is to Star Wars.

I never saw matrix revolutions, but I thought this movie was incredible. I wasn't expecting such a great story or excellent characters when I started watching it.

I saw the dub myself, I wonder what the sub is like.

The sub is actually pretty good, but it is nothing special. Up until the final thirty minuets I was thinking the movie was just so-so, but then after that it just bowled me over. The ending was incredible.

Not bad! An ecologic film with humans destroying the planet. The characters are well cool, I liked Princess Nausicaa, but the history is not so good.

One of the better Ghibli films imho. Not counting that there wasn't an epilogue, the movie is excellent.

Perhaps it was because I read the manga first, but I was underwhelmed by the movie. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't that great, either.

I was the complete opposite. Watched the movie first (as I imagine alot of people did) then read the manga. Was underwhelmed by the manga. Anything following in Miyazaki's vision's footsteps will automatically be underwhelming I guess, no matter what medium.

I think the manga was first because it wouldn't be produced until a manga existed for it. I think one of the reviewers mentioned this.

Sumi Shimamoto was born to play Nausicaa. Her voice could not have been better for that character.

The first volume or two were made before the anime because the only way Miyazaki could get financial backing for the anime was if there was a manga to base it off of. The other five or six volumes took years to be completed. It took well over a decade to be finished.

Needless to say, which version is Miyazaki's "true" vision is rather debatable.

Still not quite sure why, but this movie was kind of a miss for me. Only rating it a 7. The biggest thing that brought it down for me was just simply the enjoyment. As a whole, it was rather boring in my opinion. The whole setting was just lame too. The whole thing was just nowhere remotely near as creative as his other works I've seen. I can see Miyazaki has certainly grown since this film...

I actually think that this movie does have an original story, which also has the great ability to reflect a strong message and to generate some powerful feelings. I simply love the part when the scene with golden fields appears and an innocent kid's voice is humming "la-la-la". That's simply sweet and loveable. All in all, I liked the idea of the movie and I enjoyed it in all its possible meanings.

Great film. Amazing storyline, animation (for 1984), sound and characters.

P.S. I think you mean The Matrix has vibes from this not the other way round as The Matrix is basically just a massive anime rip-off..

My first Miyazaki movie, simply amazing. I liked the beginning and the end of the movie specially. The story is actually sad and the concept is not original, but we're talking about the 80's here and it is very well played out and the characters become epic. Also superb animation, the flying scenes are top notch.

First I gave it a 10/10 but nerfed it down to a 9/10 simply because, in spite of this movie being the masterpiece it is, I've seen something else that was perfection, and perfection is 10.

Fantastic movie made even more fantastic with Joe Hisaishi's music. Out of all the Miyazaki movies, this one felt the most epic to me.

Great movie, it had action, drama, all around good characters. Towards the end it did kind of drag on bad it bounced back. Definitely not where I thought the movie was going to go when I first started watching it.

Simply loved this movie. I loved the animation, characters, story, sound, everything. I'd say 3rd or 4th movie in my rankings so far.

And yeah, somehow i started thinking matrix at one point, except that this was hundred times better.

It was a really good movie. I liked the story( except the middle: it was to confusing). However parts of the soundtrack seemed a little old, even for this movie.

But it is quite obvious that this movie was an inspiration for many anime series :) . While I was looking at it I always thought "Where have I seen this before?"

As usual I'm underwhelmed by a Miyazaki movie. It's good but, I just can't see it as a masterpiece that alot of people claim it to be. 6/10

I can probably nitpick a lot of things, but it was a good manga adaptation, it was long enough and it made it's main point across. The animated omus looked pretty awesome.
7-8/10 I feel empty, but I enjoyed it.

This was good...but not as good as I thought it would be. It just didn't give me the same feeling as some of his other works like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

I think this could have used more background information, I just didn't feel engaged enough in the film.

I'll give this an 8.

I really enjoyed Princess Nausicaa's character, she had her ideals and stuck to them.
Killing is wrong you know...

Story was meh, the world being over-run with bugs weirded me out. Anddd the death of a parent 15minutes into a movie is a little over used.
Would give it 9(for voice acting, music and art)+5(for avg. characters and missing backstory)=14/2=7+1(Good happy ending)=8.0/10.0

Highly recommend though if you are looking for something on the lighter side.

As a big Nausicaa / Ghibli fan I really had to have the Bluray ...even though importing from Japan is expensive.

This still stays my fav ghibli movie and well, favorite anime movie of all time...when I rewatched the bluray version I fell rather teary at the end of the movie + the bluray edition is just a very great remaster of an already great looking movie, even to day

Wait, a lot of things aren't answered.

1. How did she survived from the inhaling the poison when she was communicating with the other jet? This was NEVER explained. Don't even give me the excuse that the "pure air" cured it.

2. So what happened afterwards? They all lived happily ever after even with the two angry armies?

3. Also, did anyone notice that fox squirrel thing also appeared in Castle in the Sky? Juuust saying.

4. I have to say, Princess Mononoke pretty much reused the plot of Nausicaa and did it better by adding more music and more character interaction instead of Nausicaa and her Ouhms

I was sitting here the entire time waiting for things that happened in the manga and none of it happened. I actaully do believe the manga was superior. It had a lot more back story (something I see a lot of you complain about) and the plot seemed more extensive than just this. And all I read is the first volume (I think, I got some from my uncle and they were the ones released in parts and those parts cut and I'm guessing each part was a volume and each section was a chapter. Princess Mononoke did seem to have a huge vibe from this as y'all have said. Yeah the music did feel out of place but 'eh... Still good music.

I give it an 8/10 (really a 7.5 but I'm nice ^.^). Not the best Miyazaki film I've seen, but a very touching storyline and still lovely as all his works seem to be.

Loved this movie, I had put off watching it for a while and sad that I haven't watched it sooner. The story was pretty touching and I was crying at the end. This is definitely one of the best Miyazaki films I've seen. Great story telling and awesome characters, I would have liked a little more explanation behind the Giant Warrior and that tribe (maybe that's something I can get in the manga) but it was only like a 2 hour film.

I loved the visuals and creativity in the animation especially something that was made in 1984 you can see it was definitely an inspiration for a lot of stuff.

Liked the movie. 9/10

Few questions:

1. What was that right at the end (literally the last frame) where it was some sort of grave with a twig or something?

2. Why were people calling her Lestel and why did she call that woman her mother?

I have a question too - WHY DOESN'T NAUSICAA WEAR PANTIES?!
FFS,I could only stare at her naked butt whenever she was flying,climbing,etc...Would showing her panties make the film like 13+ or something? lol
Anyway, very good film and *thumb up* for no-panties Nausicaa!

that was definitely not her bare ass. the girl was just wearing tan pants. they were semi-bulgie and ugly so i sincerely doubt they were her legs. plus she wouldn;'t have let her bare legs touch those toxic spores in the beginning of the movie. xD

anyways now that that's cleared up i loved this movie. in the beginning i was mildly bored but once the abzul guy entered i was entertained like no other. i love the enviromental messages that are in basically all of miyazoki's films. (;

Why has no one commented on the setting and culture of this film? Fucking AMAZING how Miyazaki can build a world and make it ridiculously believable, yet fantastical at the same time. The face masks, the clothing, the damn aircraft, the amazing creature design, the temperature, the land (mountains, valleys, forests...). I think a lot of people take for granted how difficult it can be to craft a world of such intricate detail, and this sort of creativity is something I wish was more prevalent in anime and games.

Aside from that, I've always loved the music and chemistry between the different... factions? And the relationships between the Valley of the Wind's villagers, of course.

It was thanks to this movie and Castle in the Sky that I fell in love with anime, but I still think this movie's one of the better Ghibli films, and that's saying something.
