All of as at some certain time we get confused in which order we have to watch some anime that have various movies, OVA and series throughout the years and we get lost in the process to find the right order. I'm thinking we should have a first page here that we should renew it all the time and having as much info as possible for the most well known anime. I kindly request your help if you like and I'll try to make it as helpful as possible. It's gonna take time but I think it's gonna be alright! Legend of the Galactic Heroes 1. Spiral Labirinth (14 eps) 2. Silver Valley (4 eps) 3. Those Who Revolt (4 eps) 4. The Duelist (4 eps) 5. Golden Wings (Movie with different style to the franchise you don't lose much if you don't ever watch it) 6. Those Who Recapture (4 eps) 7. Morning's Dream, Night's Song (4 eps) 8. Hundred Billion of Stars, Hundred Billion of Lights (12 eps) 9. The Third Tiamat Battle (2 eps) 10. My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (Movie) 11. Disgrace (4 eps) 12. Overture to a New War (Movie) 13. Main series (110 eps) Currently (Feb 2020) there is an ongoing remake of the old series but although it's not bad at all it's not the masterpiece the old series is. If you haven't watched LOGH do yourself a favour and watch the old one. Macross 1. Macross Zero (5 eps OVA, 2002-2004) (Set in AD 2008) 2. SDF Macross (36 eps TV series, 1982-1983) (Set in AD 1999-2012) 3. Macross: Flashback 2012 (music video, 1987) (Set in AD 2012) 4. Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie, 1984) (Set in AD 2009) 5. Macross Plus (4 eps OVA, 1994) & Macross Plus Movie Edition (movie, 1995) (Set in AD 2040) 6. Macross 7 (49 eps TV series, 1994) (Set in AD 2045-2046) 7. Macross 7: The Galaxy is Calling Me! (short movie, 1995) (Set in AD January 2046) 8. Macross 7 Encore (3 additional TV eps, 1995)(Set in AD 2046) 9. Macross Dynamite 7 (4 eps OVA , 1997-1998) (AD 2047) 10. Macross Frontier (25 eps TV series, 2008) (Set in AD 2059) 11. Macross Frontier Deculture Edition (1 ep, TV) (Set in AD 2059) (An expanded version of the 1st ep of Macross Frontier) 12. Macross Frontier: The False Songstress (movie, 2009) & Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell (movie, 2011) (Set in AD 2059) (2 movies retelling of the Macross Frontier series) 13. Macross Δ (26 eps TV series, 2016) & Macross Δ Movie: Gekijou no Walküre (movie, 2018) (Set in AD 2067) (movie retelling of the Macross Δ series) 14. Macross Δ Movie 2 (movie, 2020) 15. Macross II: Lovers Again (6 eps OVA, 1992) (Set in AD 2092 - Parallel World) I shall also add "Macross Fufonfia" a 20 eps, ONA which is a parody of the Macross Frontier series where the cast of characters are taken and set in present day Tokyo.I think that includes everything... Armored Trooper Votoms 1. Armored Trooper Votoms: Red Shoulder Document - Roots of Treachery (OVA) (Set roughly a year prior to the TV series) 2. Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files (OVA) (There is the movie which summarizes the OVA but I recommend watching this one) 3. Armor Hunter Mellowlink (OVA) (Starts four months prior to the TV series you can watch it individually and that's what I'm suggesting if you want to have a taste of the Votoms universe) 4. Armored Trooper Votoms: Episodes 1-13 (Uoodo storyline) 5. Armored Trooper Votoms: The Last Red Shoulder (OVA) 6. Armored Trooper Votoms: Episodes 14-27 (Kummen storyline) 7. Armored Trooper Votoms: Episodes 28-39 (Sunsa storyline) 8. Armored Trooper Votoms: Episodes 40-52 (Quent storyline) 9. Armored Trooper Votoms: Big Battle (OVA) (Set during the one-year gap in the TV series. watch it somewhere in between the Quent storyline) 10. Armored Trooper Votoms: Shining Heresy (OVA) (Set 32 years after the TV series) 11. Armored Trooper Votoms: Alone Again (OVA) (Begins 3 months after the end of Shining Heresy) 12. Armored Trooper Votoms: Phantom Chapter (OVA) 13. Armored Trooper Votoms: Case; Irvine (OVA) (You can watch it individually) 14. Armored Trooper Votoms: Votoms Finder (OVA) (You can watch it individually) Captain Harlock Although there isn't a specific order to watch the varius series as there isn't exactly a continuity I can recommend the following: 1. You can watch the original series "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" (1978-1979) and after the 13th episode you can watch the 35 minute movie "The Mystery of Arcadia" (1978). The series that can be considered as a sequel is "The Endless Odyssey" (2002-2003) but there are many stuff that are altered in comparison to the old series. 2. The other suggestable way is that you watch the movie "Arcadia of My Youth" (1982) and then the series "Endless Orbit SSX" (1982-1983). After that you can watch what is written above (No. 1). 3. Harlock Saga (1999) can be watched individually but I suggest at least after watching some of the above mentioned stuff. 4. Gun Frontier (2002) is probably the weakest link in Harlock's universe and sets our favourite protagonist in a Wild West scenery. I think I should mention that the series doesn't actually end. 5. Captain Herlock (2013) is the latest installement in the legendary captain's story and one that is meant only for fans. It's loosely based after some of the above mentioned stories. I wouldn't overally recommend it... 6. Other than those the legendary Captain makes appearances and in the following: the Galaxy Express 999 universe, Space Symphony Maetel, Queen Emeraldas, Cosmo Warrior Zero. Galaxy Express 999 - Queen Millennia - Maetel related stuff 1. Galaxy Express 999 (101 eps). There are some movies set during the series but cannot be found easily: a. Galaxy Express 999: Glass no Clair (Remake of the first half of episode 3) b. Galaxy Express 999: Can You Live Like A Warrior? (Remake of episodes 12-13) c. Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Traveller Emeraldas (Remake of episodes 22) d. Galaxy Express 999: Can You Love Like a Mother? (Remake of episodes 51-52) e. Galaxy Express 999: Beyond the Diamond Ring (Alternative version) 2. Galaxy Express 999 (Movie) 3. Adieu Galaxy Express 999 (Movie) 4. Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy (Movie) There isn't exactly a continuity here either but Matsumoto is that way... You either love it or hate it! Maetel makes appearances also in: "The Galaxy Railways: A Letter from the Abandoned Planet" and in "Cosmo Warrior Zero". Two series that can be watched in some manner are the following: 1. Maetel Legend (OVA - 2 eps) 2. Space Symphony Maetel (TV - 13 eps) There is some contradiction here... You can watch these stuff before watching the Galaxy Express 999 and right after watching: 1. Queen Millennia (TV - 42 eps) 2. Queen Millennia (Movie) It's very confusing since all these stuff are not very well connected though... Yamato 1. Space Battleship Yamato (TV series 26 eps, 1974-1975) & Space Battleship Yamato (compilation movie, 1977) (Set in 2199 AD) [Note: The series was meant to continue and Captain Harlock was going to make his first appearance but that never happened...] 2. There are two stories here following the first season of Yamato: Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: In the Name of Love (movie, 1978) & Space Battleship Yamato 2 (TV series 26 eps, 1978-1979) (Set in 2201 AD) [Note: The movie was giving an end to the franchise so they made the series in order for the saga to be continued] 3. Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage (movie, 1979) 4. Be Forever Yamato (movie, 1980) 5. Space Battleship Yamato 3 (TV series, 25 eps 1980-1981) (set in 2205 AD) 6. Space Battleship Yamato: Final Chapter (movie, 1983) (Set in 2203 AD) [Note: There is a belief that since the 3rd series was not that succesful the movie bypassed the concept of the series and was setted before it] 7. Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth (movie, 2009) (Set in 2220 AD) 8. Yamato 2520 (OVA 3 eps, 1994-1996) (Set in 2520 AD with the 18th ship bearing the name Yamato) 9. Great Yamato No. 0 (OVA 3 eps, 2004-2007) (set in 3199 AD) Some of these stuff are very rare or if you find them there are in bad quality. It's worth a try from you though! If Yamato wasn't created there wouldn't be space operas for all fans of the species! Enjoy! Also there are remakes of the original which I highly recommend! 1. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (OVA 26 eps, 2012) 2. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshimeguru Hakobune (movie, 2014) 3. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (OVA 26 eps, 2017) 4. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2205: Aratanaru Tabidachi (movie, 2020) Gundam (Universal Century [UC] timeline) 1. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (OVA 6 eps, 2015) (Set in UC 0068) (There is a 13 episode series that tells the same story but I recommend the OVA. Also it's best if you start with the original story first and the watch this one.) 2. Mobile Suit Gundam (TV series 43 eps, 1979-1980) (Set in UC 0079) (There is also a very good 3 movie compilation of the series: Mobile Suit Gundam I [1981], Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow [1981] & Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space [1982]) 3. Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War (OVA 3 eps, 2004) (Side story set in UC 0079) 4. Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (OVA 3 eps, 2006) (Side story set in UC 0079) 5. Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2: Gravity of the Battlefront (OVA 3 eps, 2008-2009) (Side story set in UC 0079) 6. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OVA 12 eps, 1996-1999) (Side story set in UC 0079) 7. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team - Miller's Report (movie, 1998) (Set in between eps 7 & 8) (Side story set in UC 0079) 8. Kidou Senshi Gundam: Cucuruz Doan no Shima (Movie on an expanded 15th episode of the main series set in UC 0079) 9. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky (Side story set in UC 0079) 10. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower (Side story set in UC 0079) 11. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (TV series 6 eps, 1989) (Set in UC 0080) 12. Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OVA 13 eps, 1991-1992) (Set in UC 0083) 13. Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: The Fading Light of Zeon (movie, 1992) (Set in UC 0083) (Alternative setting) 14. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV series 50 eps, 1985-1986) (Set in UC 0087) (There is also a 3 movie compilation of the series: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation - Heir to the Stars, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation II - Lovers & Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation III - Love Is the Pulse of the Stars all of them were remastered in 2005-2006 with new footage but I believe the series is better.) 15. Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers (short movie, 2001) (Side story set in UC 0087) 16. Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (TV series 47 eps, 1986-1987) (Set in UC 0088) 17. Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie, 1988) (Set in UC 0093) 18. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (OVA 7 eps, 2010) (Set in UC 0096) (There is the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 TV series made in 2016 that drags a bit more so I would personaly recommend the excellent OVA.) 19. Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight Axis (OVA 6 eps, 2017) (Set in UC 0096, after the Laplace Box) 20. Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (movie, 2018) (Set in UC 0097) 21. Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (movie, 1991) (Set in UC 0123) 22. Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (TV series 51 eps, 1993-1994) (Set in UC 0153) *** Turn A Gundam is not set in UC and the timeline there is called Correct Century but there is enough references for the UC era... I left some minor stories outside of this because I didn't think they had to be mentioned. Random episodes of 1 to 10 minutes don't add anything to the plot in my point of view. Space Adventure Cobra 1. Space Adventure Cobra (31 eps, TV Series) 2. Cobra The Animation: The Psycho-Gun (4 eps, OVA) 3. Cobra The Animation: Time Drive (4 eps, OVA) 4. Cobra The Animation (13 eps, TV Series) You can watch the pilot episode and the movie independently or as an introduction to the Cobra stuff, as there is no connection to the story. Mazinger Z 1. Mazinger Z (TV series 92 eps 1972-1974) & Mazinger Z tai Ankoku Daishougun (movie, 1974) [You can watch it in between the original anime] 2. Great Mazinger (TV series 56 eps, 1974-1975) 3. Mazinger Z Movie: Infinity (movie, 2018) Another watching order can consist of the newer series (plus Great Mazinger) which do a very nice job. 1. Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-hen (TV series, 2009) 2. Great Mazinger (TV series 56 eps, 1974-1975) 3. Mazinkaiser (OVA 7 eps, 2007) & Mazinkaiser: Shitou! Ankoku Dai Shogun (OVA, 2003) 4. Mazinkaiser SKL (OVA 3 eps, 2011) Well it's a bit messed up with all those entries and there are story gaps and variations but you can probably watch and enjoy all of them plus some little spin offs that also exist. Also you can watch individualy the following two old school series: 1. Uchuu Enban Dai-Sensou (pilot movie) & UFO Robo Grendizer (TV series 74 eps, 1975-1977) [Probably my favourite of the bunch here] 2. God Mazinger (TV series 26 eps, 1984) Getter Robo The original series (plus the 90's Getter Robo Go if you feel like it) 1. Getter Robo (TV series 51 eps, 1974-1975) 2. Getter Robo G (TV series 39 eps, 1975-1976) Or the newer installments (I find Shin Getter Robo to be the best in this universe) 1. Shin Getter Robo (OVA 13 eps, 2004) 2. Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (OVA 4 eps, 2000-2001) 3. Getter Robo: Armageddon (OVA 13 eps, 1998-1999) As with Mazinger, there are some spin offs that you might watch for fun like the "Neo Getter Robo vs. Shin Getter Robo Specials" Ranma ½ It goes roughly as the following order: Ranma ep. 1-118 Ranma Movie 1 Ranma ep. 119-143 Ranma Movie 2 Ranma ep. 144-161 Ranma OVAs 1-6 Ranma Special 1-2 Ranma Movie 3 Ranma Super 1-3 There are some special episodes but you can watch them at your leisure. You will not gain anything story wise from the OVA's, movies, specials so you can skip them if you don't want to make a complete watch. Kimagure Orange Road Main series (48 episodes) * You can watch Kimagure Orange Road: Shounen Jump Special after episode 46 if you like, since it's like a different version of episode 46 you can skip it and lose nothing of the story. * The OVAs were released in a very strange order. Some fansub files are in different orders. So it's best to pay attention to the episode titles here. White Lovers (OVA 1) [among the episodes 35 and 45] Hawai Suspence (OVA 2) [among the episodes 17 and 25] I was a cat, I was a fish (OVA 3) [among the episodes 17 and 30] Hurricane Akane, the shape-shifting girl (OVA 4) [among the episodes 20 and 25] Spring is for Idols (OVA 5) [among the episodes 23 and 30] Birth of a Star (OVA 6) [after "Spring is for Idols"] Unexpected Situation (OVA 7) [after "Hurricane Akane, the shape-shifting girl"] Message in Rouge (OVA 8) [after episode 48] As listed above, OVA 2, 3, 4 and 7 can be watched after episode 20 of the main series. OVA 5 can be watched after episode 25 to be on the safe side and then watch OVA 6. OVA 1 comes in after episode 35 and OVA 8 is to be watched after the main series. For an easier watching order you can watch the first 7 OVAs after episode 35. After finishing the main series and watching the 8th OVA you can watch the movies in this order: I Want to Return to That Day (Movie) Summer's Beginning (Movie) * Since it's a rather episodic series the mandatory watch is the main series plus the first movie in my opinion. You will lose nothing of the main story if you don't watch the others, apart from having more fun, especially with the OVA's. Urusei Yatsura Urusei Yatsura TV 1 - 21 Urusei Yatsura TV Special: It's Spring! Take Off! Urusei Yatsura TV 22 - 58 Urusei Yatsura Movie 1: Only You Urusei Yatsura TV 59 - 99 Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer Urusei Yatsura TV 100 - 140 Urusei Yatsura Movie 3: Remember My Love Urusei Yatsura TV 141 - 191 Urusei Yatsura Movie 4: Lum the Forever Urusei Yatsura TV 192 - 195 Urusei Yatsura OVA: Inaba the Dream Maker Urusei Yatsura Movie 5: Final/Kanketsu-hen Urusei Yatsura OVA: Raging Sherbert Urusei Yatsura OVA: Nagisa's Fiance Urusei Yatsura OVA: The Electric Household Guard Urusei Yatsura OVA: I Howl at the Moon Urusei Yatsura OVA: Goat and Cheese Urusei Yatsura OVA: Catch the Heart Urusei Yatsura OVA: Terror of Girly-eyes Measles Urusei Yatsura OVA: Date with a Spirit Urusei Yatsura Movie 6: Always My Darling Urusei Yatsura OVA: The Obstacle Course Swim Meet There are some special episodes but you can watch them at your leisure Dragon Ball Dragon Ball Dead Zone (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 86 Bardock: Father of Goku (Special 1) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 107 Episode of Bardock (Special) World’s Strongest (Movie) Tree of Might (Movie) Lord Slug (Movie) Garlic Junior (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 123 History of Trunks (Special 2) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 125 Revenge of Cooler (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 146 Super Android 13 (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 173 Return of Cooler (Movie) Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 194 Bojack unbound (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 207 Broly’s Second Coming (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 250 Bio-Broly (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 253 Fusion Reborn (Movie) Dragon Ball Z to Episode 288 Wrath of the Dragon (Movie) Finish Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball GT Dragon Ball Super to Episode 3* Battle of the Gods (Movie) Dragon Ball Super to Episode 18 Resurrection F (Movie) The Rest of Dragon Ball Super Dragon Ball Super: Broly (Movie) You can skip Dragon Ball GT or even some of the movies and you won't lose much of the story as many of them are not considered canon. You can also watch Kai instead of Z if you want a more compact story. * Dragon Ball Super's first 27 episodes are adaptations of the films Dragon Ball Z Movie 14: Kami to Kami (episodes 1-14) and Dragon Ball Z Movie 15: Fukkatsu no F (episodes 15-27) [Taken from the MAL page]. Saint Seiya Saint Seiya (1986, TV Series, 114 eps) Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter - Sanctuary (2002, OVA, 13 eps) Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter - Inferno (2005, OVA, 12 eps) Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter - Elysion (2008, OVA, 6 eps) Saint Seiya: The Heaven Chapter - Overture (2004, Movie) Saint Seiya Omega (2012, TV Series, 97 eps) * Saint Seiya - The Lost Canvas 2 seasons OVA (2009-2011, 13 eps each) is a prequel that's not completed from the manga, it adapts about 1/3 of it and my advice is to watch it after watching the main story. * Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold (2015, ONA, 13 eps) can be watched after the Hades chapter as it's a story happening at the same time. * There are some movies and a "Recap Episode" (2003) of the main series it's best to watch them after the main series and before the Hades chapter. The movie watch order is like that below: 1. Saint Seiya the Movie: Evil Goddess Eris (1987) 2. Saint Seiya: The Heated War of the Gods (1988) 3. Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth (1988) 4. Saint Seiya: Warriors of the Final Holy Battle (1989) * The is a movie "Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary" (2014) and "Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya" (new ONA from Netlfix) but I would advice you not to watch such garbage... Dirty Pair (plus Crusher Joe info) The original main story goes like this: Dirty Pair (1985, TV Series) Dirty Pair: The Nolandia Affair (1985, OVA) Dirty Pair: From the Lovely Angels, with love (1987, OVA) Dirty Pair (1987, OVA) Dirty Pair: Flight 005 Conspiracy (1990, OVA) Dirty Pair: Project EDEN (1987, OVA) * Dirty Pair Flash (total of 16 episodes OVAs 1994-96) is a reboot/alternative setting of the series. * Crusher Joe is set in the same universe. You should watch it like this: Crusher Joe Movie (1983) Crusher Joe OVA (1989) Captain Tsubasa Captain Tsubasa (1983, TV series) Captain Tsubasa: Europe Daikessen (1985, movie 1) Captain Tsubasa: Ayaushi! Zen Nihon Jr. (1985, movie 2) Captain Tsubasa: Sekai Daikessen!! Jr. World Cup (1986, movie 4) Captain Tsubasa: Saikyou no Teki! Holland Youth (1995, movie 5) Shin Captain Tsubasa (1995, OVA) Captain Tsubasa J (1994, TV series) *start watching at episode 35 as the others are recaps* Captain Tsubasa: Road to 2002 (2001, TV series) * Captain Tsubasa: Asu ni Mukatte Hashire! is the 3rd movie made in 1986 but mostly you watch flashbacks from previous encounters. Watch it only if are a completionist. * Captain Tsubasa (2018) is a remake of the old series that tranfers 2/3 of the original manga story in a quicker pace. Slam Dunk Slam Dunk ep. 1-20 Slam Dunk Movie 1 Slam Dunk ep. 21-36 Slam Dunk Movie 2 Slam Dunk ep. 37-60 Slam Dunk Movie 3 Slam Dunk Movie 4 Slam Dunk ep. 61-101 Transformers (Generation 1 continuity) Generation 1 Season 1 and 2 (Series, 1984) Scramble City (OVA, 1986) Transformers: The Movie (Movie, 1986) G-1 Season 3 (Season 4 the "Rebirth" 3 episode story serves only for the US/Hasbro continuity) The Headmasters (Series, 1987) Super God Masterforce (Series, 1988) Victory (Series, 1989) Zone (OVA, 1990) You're Under Arrest OVA (1994, 4 eps) TV Series (1995, 47 eps) TV Specials (1999, 20 eps) The Movie (1999, movie) Fast & Furious (2001, 26 eps) No Mercy (2002, special) Full Throttle (2007, 23 eps) Full Throttle Special (2008, special) The list is going to be renewed at times! |

The main series of LoGH is supposed to be watched at the very end? And I'm already 23 episodes in! The only other LoGH-related media I've watched is "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars". What should I do now? Put the main show on-hold and start at the very beginning with Spiral Labirinth or finish the main series anyway and then cover all the prequals? |

Don't worry! I watched LOGH the same way as you + Overture to a New War movie so I watched the so-called Wenli-Reinhard OVAs: A Hundred Billion Stars; A Hundred Billion Lights; My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars and Spiral Labyrinth after the main story. I just took it as a background information for the main story. Golden Wings movie I watched the last as it has different art and style and I didn't want to mix. Now I think that it would have been better if I had watched in suggested order but it's not a rare case when OVAs following some series tells more about the main characters and their background as in this case. |

I get what this thread is all about and I find it interesting. Only thing is that in the case of LOGH here, that's just the timeline, not the right order that I would recommend anyone to watch it in. While you could, I'm more of a believer in watching anime in the order they were released. Otherwise you're jumping around decades of animation styles and you might not fully appreciate the prequels unless you've seen the original series. |

For example, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs. If someone follows your way of watching, he/she happens to see the sequel before prequel. The sequel JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 6 OVAs is from 1993 and the first part of the story is 7 OVAs from 2000. I almost did this mistake to start watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure from the middle but I read about it on some forum so I escaped making this mistake. Anyway, I think it's a very good idea to share our knowledge on subject because it's often very confusing. |

There are exceptions to everything. But the two examples we have so far with LOGH and Votoms, I would recommend that everyone start with the main series. Another thing you need to remember is that often times you're not always supposed to know details of a characters past. It can also make flashbacks feel less significant since you wouldn't actually be learning anything as your were originally intended to. Also, what about voices? With LOGH someone would be hearing Yang's voice replacement before his original? It would be weird for me to see someone go through it in that order. While the LOGH prequels are fantastic, the same can't be said for every series that has extra installments. Especially someone who prefers old school anime. Let's face it, most tacked on OVAs and movies aren't anywhere near the level of the meat of the story. Some are hit or miss. So more times than not, I'm not a fan of timeline orders nor would I watch them that way during rewatches. It just doesn't feel natural. As for JoJo that seems like one of those examples where it was intended as a treat for the existing manga readers. Which is evident in the fact that it was never released from beginning to end. Readers of the manga can probably appreciate them more than someone just watching those randomly. So in the case of JoJo I would say the manga and then the OVAs to get the most out of it. Which is kind of my entire point here. |

I always wonder how I should watch all of the Leijiverse anime. I've accumulated nearly every series/ova/movie, but I wonder how I should get into it. I've seen the the Queen Millennia, Queen Emeraldas and Maetel Legend movie/OVA, am watching Galaxy Express 999 right now. Should I push Space Symphony Maetel and Kasei Ryodan Danasaito 999.9 in between now before it's to late? I don't even dare to think about the whole Harlock franchise. There's also the problem with Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, where I'm in the middle of the first season... ^^ Should I complete the SBY franchise before going on? I've got this timetable from someone at BakaBT: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: These dates should be taken with some hesitation given your "take" on the Leijiverse. These are based on the reference timeline used for the Unofficial Leijiverse Timeline, Second Edition, which incorporates materials from all three main Leijiverse timestreams (original manga, 1980s movie era, and 1990s to present revival era). If you are an old school "movie" fan or a newer "revival" fan then your dates and interpretations of certain events will probably differ from the ones listed below. This timeline also ignores the more obvious of the many contradictions among the various incarnations of the Leijiverse. c.15 The Big Bang; creation of the Leijiverse billion BC Dominion by the Noo (during Planck time) Creation of monopole ore The first Descendants of the Twisted Rope bring about the downfall of Noo. Construction of the Gate of Yedar inside the Hourglass Nebula. Construction of a city on the surface of the Rainbow Planet in the Ulysses Nebula. (NOTE: Aside from the Gate of Yedar, the ruins on the Rainbow Planet are the oldest known surviving construct in the history of the Leijiverse). c.5-2 The known universe is dominated by the Elder Race, the billion BC oldest documented corporeal intelligence in recorded history. c.4 The surface of the primordial Earth is deluged with water billion BC from a close encounter with the rogue pelagic planet Aquarius. From this encounter the seeds of life on Earth are planted. c.650 The Nibelungen are banished from Valhalla after a failed million BC revolt led by Alberich, brother of Meeme. c.150 The Mazone pay their first visit to our Solar System. They million BC establish temporary bases on Mars and Venus at the time. c.98 The Kanto Basin in Japan is created by a large meteor million BC strike. c.26 A Nibelungen colony is established on the legendary lost million BC "fifth planet" in our Solar System. c.10 The Servants of Noo are successful in bringing about the million BC downfall of those Descendants of the Twisted Rope who imprisoned their master aeons before. c.8-5 The Guardian Spirit of Akwaa, servant of the now-ascended million BC Elder Race, determines that Earth has the greatest potential for humanoid life in the known universe. Humans are taken from Earth and seeded on eight other worlds in the Milky Way. From this effort comes the Nine Daughter Races of the Elder Race, of whom humanity is but one. A group of humans is transplated to the planet LaMaetel and their evolution accellerated to such a degree that they become a technically advanced civilization within two million years. These are the ancestors of the LaMaetel. The LaMaetel are given a special charge by the Guardian Spirit of Akwaa to oversee the development of humanity Earth. Earth's humans are the only Daughter Race whose evolution has not been accellerated or altered in any way and they are to serve as a master template by which the other Nine Daughter Races will be judged. The Iskandaa achieve spaceflight capability. The Iskandaa pay a visit to LaMaetel and have a brief cultural exchange. For their part the LaMaetel gain spaceflight technology. On the other hand, the Iskandaa gain knowledge of Earth and its unique destiny in the cosmos. c.5 The Arishna (the ancestors of the Cometine) leave their million BC dying homeworld on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy and embark on a multigenerational voyabe across the galactic void to the galaxy of Andromeda to find a new home. c.2 Dawn of intelligent life on Earth as we know it. million BC The Mazone return in force to the Solar System, where they find the LaMaetel waiting for them. Building of the Mazone base on Venus. Building of the Mazone base on the Sidonia plain of Mars. Building of the Mazone base on Brumus. c.380000 BC "The War of the Gods" as recorded in the legends of human history. This is actually a titanic, no-holds-barred war between the Mazone and the LaMaetel over the fate of Earth, with the Nibelungen as disinterested observers. c.300000 BC "The War of the Gods" ends in stalemate and truce. The major alien powers on Earth maintain separate spheres of influence. The Mazone agree to pay lip service to LaMaetel's "Millennial Queen" on Earth so long as they remain free to conduct their own affairs within their own zones of influence. Appearance of homo sapiens (i.e. "modern man" on Earth c.130000 BC Appearance of homo neanderthalis (i.e. "Neanderthal man" on Earth. This offshoot of Earth's humanity is a genetically engineered "pack animal" brought about by the Mazone. c.70000 BC Dawn of Lemuria, greatest of Earth's pre-history cultures. Not surprisingly, it arises under the protection and influence of the LaMaetel. c.50000 BC Rise of Earth's other great pre-history cultures (Atlantis, Mu, pre-dynastic Egypt, etc.), all with the assistance and protection of the LaMaetel. c.15000 BC In a fit of spite Wotan, lord of the gods of Valhalla, destroys the "fifth planet" of our Solar System due to the Nibelungen colony on its surface. A handful of Mazone and Nibelungen barely manage to escape before the planet is ripped apart. What remains of the rubble becomes the asteroid belt we know today. c.7500 BC The Great Deluge on Earth is caused by a near-passing of the planet LaMaetel. Only the Mazone refuse to help save humanity from this disaster. Human civilization on Earth is forced to start over from scratch. A visiting Lugal ship helps in the evacuation of humans from the Deluge-stricken Earth. c.7000 to The surviviors of the Nibelungen colony on Mars relocate to 1500 BC Scandanavia on Earth. Among these is Meeme, sister of Alberich. c.5000 to The First Intergalactic War 4980 BC The Sanza Star System is jointly colonized by the Iskandaa and the Galman. The Iskandaa invent wave motion techology. The Iskandaa develop the Planet Crusher, a moble wave motion gun platform capable of destroying an entire planet. Iskandaa's fleet of Planet Crushers help turn the tide in the First Intergalactic War. The Dezaria are banished though an interdimensional gate to the universe of the Black Nebula. c.4980 to The planet Eurythmia is abandoned as the surviving Iskandaa 4900 BC join their brothers and sisters on their colony world of Iscandar in the Sanza Star System. The Shalbart Empire, allies of the Eurythmians during the war, eventually collapses due to a series of Wars of Succession. The legacy of its time on the galactic stage is preserved in the distorted legend of Queen Gardiana. c.3000 BC The Galman colony on Desla becomes isolated from its homeworld due to the general confusion following both the end of the First Intergalactic War and a civil war over Desla's scarce resources. The survivors emerge on the other side as the Gamilons, a hardened warrior culture. c.2000 BC Queen Mariposa, the last living descendant of Queen Gardiana, is captured by the Bolar and exiled to the planet Phantom. c.1000 BC The Mazone abandon the Solar System for reasons still unknown. ======================================================================= AD 999 LaMaetel's moon is destroyed by tidal forces during its current pass through the Solar System. Its remaining rubble forms a series of rings around the wandering planet. Selen refuses the title of Millennial Queen and is banished from LaMaetel by her mother, Lady La Lela. Selen's younger sister Promethium is appointed in her stead. The youngest sister of the three, Senjoo, will assume the throne on the next pass. La Andromeda Promethium, now Millennial Queen of Earth, travels to Earth and assumes the identity of Yukino Yayoi, an ageless and blond-haired Japanese maiden. c.1100 The Harlock estate is founded in the old Germanic kingdom of Thuringa near present-day Heilgenstaadt. 1291 A Teutonic sea-knight named Harlock, a member of the Knight Templars, assists in the evacuation of Acre, last of the Crusader strongholds in the Holy Land. This is the first time that a member of the Harlock family sails under the banner of the Jolly Roger. 1666 "Saint Maetel" (aka La Andromeda Promethium) makes her first known documented appearance in human history. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1873 GUN FRONTIER ----------------------------------------------------------------------- c.1880 Phantom F. Harlock I is born. 1914-1918 Phantom F. Harlock I becomes a German ace fighter pilot during the First World War. c.1916 Phantom F. Harlock II is born. c.1920s Phantom F. There is no official right way to watch his work since he himself has admitted many times that there isn't. He's the most all over the place writer that I've ever seen and there are lots of different versions of storylines. Galaxy Express 999 is one that lots of things link to in ways. So I would finish that. I probably would have held off on anything involving Maetel till after that, but it's not a big deal. Watch the GE999 movies after that. Then Galaxy Railways comes in. Yamato is it's own thing. Each season continues from where the last left off and the hardest part is figuring out where all the movies fit in. I can't remember off the top of my head. Space Pirate Captain Harlock is a great place to start for his story. I'd watch Arcadia of My Youth the movie after that and the SSX series when it's finished being subbed. Then the newer stuff like Harlock Saga which isn't that great and The Endless Odyssey which is a remake/retelling of the original. Then you have titles like Cosmo Warrior Zero and Gun Frontier which are fine to slip in once you know Harlock and company a bit better. |

So there's no problem going from Galaxy Express to Galaxy Railways without touching Harlock? The relation graph has changed a bit since for SBY since the newest movie came out. lol http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/8329/spacebattleshipyamatore.jpg to http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=rel&aid=6680 |

I always find the those hilarious to look at. So yeah, use that for the Yamato movie placements. As for your question, you can watch GE999 and go to Railways without any Harlock knowledge. Harlock only makes a cameo in GE999 and in the first movie. But definitely get in the 70s Space Pirate Captain Harlock series as well. It's great stuff. |

HisokaHajime said: My friend I kindly ask for your help if you want to contribute to this topic. It was meant to help some people. You're right about watching stuff in the production order but then you get confused as you watch things that were in the past. That's why I say it's best if you watch it in the right timeline. If you ask me about LOGH I always say watch the 2 movies and then the main series. After them you can watch the 2 OVAs and the Golden Wings movie.I get what this thread is all about and I find it interesting. I'll post later some of Matsumoto's stuff... |

I think I'd be more on board if this thread was called the "The timeline order for some of the well known anime". The timeline order being called the "right order" isn't exactly something I can agree with since that's not always the case. I don't want people to become confused which already happened one post into this thread for tempo_plus. He assumed he was watching it all wrong after reading which is not the case. I looked over the Matsumoto stuff and that sounds about right. Gundam is one of those franchises where you can watch it in the timeline order or whatever you want really. The only real connection is MSG, Zeta, Double Zeta and Char's Counterattack. I can work on Kimagure Orange Road. It gets a bit confusing since the OVAs can be watched at random parts of the main series and then the two movies comes after everything. |

I agree that Votoms and LOGH are probably best watched in production order. Although with LOGH I started with My Conquest is the Sea of Stars and I think that's a pretty good starting taste of the series. But I think it worked out better that I watched Reinhard's Gaiden after the series, at that point I knew him already but got to see how he became the man he was in the main series and it made me like him even more. That Matsumoto stuff is crazy... all I really know is that some of the GE999 movies are directly related, along with the obvious Yamato seasons 1, 2, and 3, but other than that yeah you can jump around a lot with those shows. Macross probably isn't a huge deal either with where you start. Macross 7 is the only one that is closest to the original since it has some recurring side characters, but that's about it. I still think it's best to watch SDF and DYRL first though. |

The best way to watch something is to watch it in order it aired; doesn't matter if prequel came out later. |

Production order is the best order in most cases. For example, watching the main series of LOGH LAST boggles my mind. When it comes to "order," at the very least always watch the main series and its direct sequels first. That's the way it was meant to be seen. At the very, VERY least, always watch the main series first. Stuff like Macross where it's just a bunch of loosely-related series doesn't matter as much. |

For anyone who knows the Urusei Yatsura series very well, does anybody know the chronological order amongst the TV series, OVA's, and movies that were released? |

Didn't get into LOGH yet, but I'm planning on getting into more Old school series, LOGH included. Personally, I'm going to start with the main series first, then whatever is recommended to watch next, etc., but some of these series aren't on MAL. |

Here is a release date order list for Urusei Yatsura but it might not be entirely accurate. Urusei Yatsura TV 1 (Oct 14, 1981) - 21 (March 24, 1982) Urusei Yatsura TV Special: It's Spring! Take Off! (April 1, 1982 or April 2, 1982 according to MAL) Urusei Yatsura TV 22 (April 7, 1982) - 58 (Feb 2, 1983) Urusei Yatsura Movie 1: Only You (Feb 11, 1983 or Feb 13, 1983 according to MAL) Urusei Yatsura TV 59 (Feb 16, 1983) - 99 (Feb 8, 1984) Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer (Feb 11, 1984) Urusei Yatsura TV 100 (Feb 15, 1984) - 140 (Jan 23, 1985) Urusei Yatsura Movie 3: Remember My Love (Jan 26, 1985) Urusei Yatsura TV 141 (Jan 30, 1985) - 191 (Feb 19, 1986) Urusei Yatsura Movie 4: Lum the Forever (Feb 22, 1986) Urusei Yatsura TV 192 (Feb 26, 1986) - 195 (March 19, 1986) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Urusei Yatsura OVA: Inaba the Dream Maker (July 18, 1987) Urusei Yatsura Movie 5: Final/Kanketsu-hen (Feb 6, 1988) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Raging Sherbert (Dec 2, 1988) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Nagisa's Fiance (Dec 8, 1988) Urusei Yatsura OVA: The Electric Household Guard (Aug 21, 1989) Urusei Yatsura OVA: I Howl at the Moon (Sep 1, 1989) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Goat and Cheese (Dec 21, 1989) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Catch the Heart (Dec 27, 1989) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Terror of Girly-eyes Measles (June 21, 1991) Urusei Yatsura OVA: Date with a Spirit (June 21, 1991) Urusei Yatsura Movie 6: Always My Darling (November 2, 1991 or Aug 18, 1991 according to MAL) Urusei Yatsura OVA: The Obstacle Course Swim Meet (Dec 23, 2008) Everything before the dash line seems fairly accurate I think, but once it gets to the OVAs I am not sure. MAL says the OVAs started on Sept 24, 1985 but the first OVA, Inaba the Dream Maker, is listed on other sites as being from 1987. Maybe the MAL list is including some of the compilation music videos which I have not put on the list. I will try to learn more about the OVA releases when I get to those episodes. I have already noticed that the Animeigo release lists "Raging Sherbert" as OVA 3, while on websites it is listed as the second OVA. The two OVAs released on the same day (June 21, 1991), I just listed in the order websites generally put them. |

Now it's only to copy and save it before MAL eats it up. XD |

This is relevant to my interests. I'll keep in mind that order for Gundam and Macross. |

Just a minor correction, for anyone watching the original Harlock series you can watch Mystery of Arcadia in place of episode 13, not after. Because it's basically a slightly extended episode. |

I just started watching Harlock with intentions of also getting into Galaxy 999 and Yamato and this guide was immensely useful. I'm glad this still exists. |

I'm very happpy that it's still useful after all those years! Have fun!
@Anakin1981 I've actually started on UC Gundam as well using this list as a cross reference too. Have you ever thought of adding Kidou Senshi Gundam: Cucuruz Doan no Shima movie (Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island) which came out in 2022 to the above MSG UC timeline list? It's technically an expansion of the 15th episode from the MSG TV series and could probably fit in there with Igloo and 08th MS Team. |
