Pretty much smile whenever i see Yune. TOO CUTE!

Though, it was kinda weird having Gramps speaking in Japanese to Yune and Claude when they are suppose to be different. But now that I know she understands, i will just not fret about it.

Yune is a little uguu for my tastes but I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode coming in with no expectations. It had a nice air of elegance about it and was wonderfully paced. Definitely going to give it a shot.

Finally! A non-eechi, violent, gorey anime this season!

The only thing I did not like about this episode whether or not Yune was speaking french or not. It made the diaolgue hard to follow. Overall great episode!

I couldn't figure out at when they were speaking Japanese and when they were speaking French.

Let me get this straight:
Claude: Only speaks French.
Yune: Speaks Japanese and French.
Oscar: Speaks Japanese and French.

If that's how it is, then I guess I get it so far.

The episode was pretty good. I feel like it's missing something, although at the same time it feels as if there's really nothing you can do improve it.

Liked the OP and ED. Suits the show.

I'll continue watching this.

Pardon my French,

C'est vraiment bon. J'aime cela.

Lovely. Simply lovely... what a fantastic first episode.

As stated by some, she shines in this 'drab' background.. & I hope the market starts to follow suit.

So please with this show. As the first I've seen for this Summer 2011 Season, I am pleased.

My body was not ready for moe of this magnitude.

Really liked the show. Was a little confused about how much Yune actually was understanding, but that was resolved at the end.

Really looking forward to the next ep (the cheese tasting bit looks adorable already).

HRNGHHHHH
Yune has formed a huge soft spot in my heart even more.

I just wish the studio would put a little bit more effort into drawings of Claude (come on! he's the second most important character in the show!), as I can clearly notice Yune is getting preferential treatment from the studio and its staff.

The rest of the show was quite well-done, though there's a slight hint that Oscar, the old due, could be a lo----.

What a fantastic slice of life show ! The first episode is so much better than any episode of Victorian Romance Emma (closest thing that comes to mind) for example. Art is wonderful, the characters seem really interesting and everything is done with true grace. Also, fluent - almost litterary - French in an anime is so unusual that I really liked it ;)

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

Let's now give a proper summary for this anime:

"In the late 19th Century a Japanese family sells their daughter to an old foreigner who brings the daughter back to Europe and makes her the slave of his desires and those of his grandson".

Oscar needs to keep his pants up and hands away, Yune is innocent and doesn't deserve to be corrupted by an old man, that also goes for Alice if he is near her.

Great first episode! i really love slice of life show. It was very relaxing and i love the Claude and Yune interaction.

You can see the old palais du trocadero in the OP,and we never see the eiffel tower, right? the palais is inaugurated in 1878 (demolished in 1937) and the eiffel tower construction began in january 1887, so the date of the show is between 1878 and 1886. Just for say.

I especially liked the backgrounds and the use of proper french (sorry, just a bit tired by frapanese), although the whole idea of bringing back a little girl from a totally foreign country (by a suspicious old man) is quite unsettling.

Currently dreaming.

I love this. SO ADORABLE.
It's interesting to see how Japanese people view the west (or, the west circa the 1800s at least).
I don't get why everyone is comparing this to Aria, though. Aria had a lot less conflicts. I can't imagine any Aria character telling Akari to gb2/Manhome/ or something lol, no matter how badly she'd fuck up.
Anyway the way Claude and Yune reached an understanding was damn cute <3
And I didn't get the language thing at all... why did Claude think Yune doesn't understand French when they had clearly held conversations?? :X
Well, w/e. BLESS THIS ANIME'S SOUL.

comparing it to aria is not the same as saying they are the same thing. there are obvious differences. many of which are huge. but the similarities are pretty prevalent. the sound and directing, slow pace, and atmospheric setting in particular.

Yeah I kinda agree about that ._. I'd be disgusted if I heard of something like that happening IRL tbh. But in an anime I'm willing to let it slide, if they keep the adorableness up.

This was a fantastic first episode that I was not expecting. The production value here is fantastic, and the characters actually behave understandably.

The atmosphere is very reminiscent of Aria. Looking forward to more in the coming weeks!

Hi guys,

Thank you for all the heart warming comments. I'm part of the staff of Ikoku meiro no croisee, along with my two french co-workers and friends Stan and Yann. The production is over yet but we worked a lot on this series and it was a real honnor and pleasure. I've already worked with Sato Junichi (aria, the OVA) and I was really glad to have been picked up this time again. This is the first time I worked with Yasuda san (director) and I really enjoyed his sensitive touch and his constant attention to details.
We were in charge of all the backgroud design (except the color which was done by Kawaguchi san of the atelier roku), the props setting, a lot of language checking, and all the layouts of the exposure scenes.
Like always (Oban star racers, basquash!...) I'm still writing about my experience in japanese animation industry on the well knowned french animation site catsuka.com. Please check the satelight forum to look at some production designs.

This is so refreshing. I loved it!

So actually they're speaking French (shadowed by Japanese) and Yune actually understood everything all along! I love the way they portray the way western civilizations see (or saw at that time) Japanese people. "Why is she bowing?!" "She's like a doll!".

Yune is too cute. >w<

Oh please. It's just like a granddad playing with his grandkids. This is the reason why every guy gets accused of being a lolicon for even talking to a little kid. The good suffer from the bad.

Cool your posting something, you have my regards from The Netherlands ;).

Anyways, when I read the summary about it. I was like meh, when I heard it was like Aria. I was more meeeh. Then I watched Usagi Drop.. and thought, heck let's try it.. and now? I am in... awe.. srsly.. how cute ;-;.

Maybe I should give Aria a second try?
