That is actually a smart way to convince politicians to change the healthcare system.
Every sick person is in jail where medical care is required for the sake of human rights.
Less workers -> reduced production -> low sales -> bankruptcy
$1, despite the act, is not enough for a long jail time sentence.
The only thing that can be lost is one's state of mind.
Win win!

I'm not doing it though because I don't have to yet.
The threat is stronger than the execution.

Health care!!!

We all need to do this.

And flood the prisons, costing good, taxpaying citizens a fortune?

... Let's do this.

America... I've heard a similar story of a homeless person doing this for 3 meals a day and a bed to sleep on.

Smart?

Now I know the country must be hard pressed and in an extremely poor state if a person is willing to go to this extreme just to get healthcare. Heck I'll admit I live in a place which has a fantastic healthcare system (Canada). But nonetheless, that wasn't a smart move.

When he gets out of jail, which by the way, no judge would send him to for too long a time, how is he going to get a proper job with jail time on his record? I don't think it was smart at all.

Well, they should ask themselves "Should we do something about health care?",but I think that they already did,and answer was "Who gives a f...?".
That's too lame... seriously, some random street dogs have better health care.

Smart guy, give him props, the system forced people like him to lose a lot and he fought back abusing the same system that caused his situation in the first place. If he was younger, he could've joined the military but being 59, he really had nothing to lose.

Doesn't have to pay for housing, no taxes, free food, bed, library, computer, outdoor activities, free health and dental, free job training, etc. Seems like jail is a great place to be when you're broke. I can see in the future inmates writing jail reviews and saying which jails are the best in comfort and quality, much like hotels.com. Sigh this is humiliating. Why do I live here?

Remember, prison is not all good. Cramped living, no privacy, and surrounded by all sorts of characters one probably doesn't want to associate with. To say nothing of the increased difficulty of getting a job afterward (no one wants to hire a criminal), though this man has even thought that through.

Yes, it actually happens all the time. You can even google it if you doubt me.
Sure they treat you, but the treatment is minimum. I doubt they would perform the surgery this guy needed.

This is really sad. Poor guy. It's a shame the Devil deceived him into thinking that robbing a bank would help; a simple prayer to God would've cured all of his problems. This man is in my prayers.

This is really sad. I live in a third world country and the health care system isn't that bad. I hope this man gets the care he needs.

I wish.

However I don't see how he can get in that much trouble for a single dollar from the bank...

Ha, what can I say? This man is a smart one. And it says something when people in jail are being treated better (public service wise) than citizens who contribute their fair share to society.

homeless people do this too, so that they can get free food and warm shelter. it is nothing new and it seems society is just as content to have people at the bottom and avenues to calm our conscious.

This is depressing. Goes to show that I shouldn't take my country's health care for granted.

US is not good enough yet not too hopeless.

For drugs there are some assistance programs outside the insurance:
Partnership for Prescription Assistance or call 1-888-4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669).
RxAssist Patient Assistance Program Center
Together Rx Access® Card
NeedyMeds

There should be more and widely promoted.
Of course, for some other conditions with expensive treatments, people need more help. People in need should ask the in-hospital social workers for more information. It's true that there is a limit and the scrutiny is strict and lengthy. Many may be left in long-term debt after the treatment.
