To all you males you use MAL: do you ever read shoujo manga? Do you avoid it like a disease? Read it secretly? Read it proudly?

-----Perhaps I was curious about this because of the shoujo manga "Otomen." It's about a guy who likes to read shoujo manga. I later found a blog by a young Japanese man who likes Otomen, and admitted he enjoys reading shoujo manga himself. Is he a rare phenomenon? Are there other guys who like shoujo manga? Do you like all kinds of shoujo stories, or only a few select series?-----

I've tried to like them and read them but usually they don't interest me.. not my style

However, the only good Shoujo that I really liked and have watched the anime for (planning to read manga) is SKIP BEAT

It's awsome, especially Kyouko ^^

I have at least 7 shoujo manga on my list. So far, all of the shoujo manga that I've read/reading were romance manga (such as Reimei no Arcana and Koukou Debut). But then again, most shoujo contain romance (right?).
I probably have some more on my to-read list.

I'd say about a third of the manga I read is shoujo/josei. I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy shoujo. I'm generally more drawn to shounen/sienen, but the romance and emotions of most shoujo is always a fun counterpoint to machoness and strength of average shounen. There's a lot of variety within either demographic, but I still feel like if I just read either one without the other I'd probably burn out on manga.

I read quite a bit of short shoujo manga when I started reading manga, but now can't really bring my self to read them. The art style is not to my liking and all of the stories are quite similar.
Although I still read Kaichou wa Maid-sama and Dengeki Daisy (awesome mangas) and also plan on reading Kimi ni Todoke in the near future.

Yeah I (plan to) read a lot of shoujo manga, there's even one which is one of my favorite manga. I'm not picky about reading shounen, shoujo, seinen or whatever, as long as it's good.

I'll read or watch pretty much anything as long as it's good and that includes Shoujo. I think limiting your self to one demographic, and declaring you don't like something or say that MOST of it is the same when you haven't even read enough shoujo, josei, shounen, or seinen to rightfully make that statement, is very narrow minded.

I would probably be a hypocrite if I would say that I don't read shoujo mangas xD
I actually don't read them. I don't like the art style and while romance is almost a must in everything I read, the shoujo romance is a bit too soap operish(just invented it) This being said though, I still read Kimi ni Todoke and Watashi ni Jinasai(?), the later being on course of being dropped...

Very interesting! XD Lots of girls whack the shoujo genre, and say that only shounens are any good. It's interesting to see that a lot of guys really do read it!

Shoujo isn't that interesting to me but I've read a few
as long as the guys aren't removing their shirts every page and it's about normal teenage love that is..

Josei beats shoujo and seinen beats shounen

Yeah, i've read/watched a few of the big titles already. I admit the bubbles and flowers sorta grate on my nerves but thankfully they arent used in too much excess. the art styles don't bother me. the only art style i dislike is the one KEY uses. (Clannad; Kanon; Air)

I'll answer for my husband I guess... he does sometimes, if the story isn't outright boring or way too girly. He enjoyed Sand Chronicles, for example.

Sure. I've read plenty. I don't treat Shojo different than Shonen, Kodomo, or Seinen. If I am interested, I read it. I've read Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Rayearth, High School Debut, Sugar Princess, etc.

Some are boring, but there are also plenty of good ones.

well i love romance but for some reason shoujo romance doesnt really do it for me, ive read a couple that i liked like akuma to love song, or highschool debut, but for the most part i cant bring myself to enjoy it at all. its probably because i cant relate to a female protagonist as much as i can relate to a male one, epecially when romance is involved.

I've read a few random ones, no complaints. It's a nice change of pace from Shonen/Seinen. The only one I'll probably openly admit to reading is Ouran, it's too funny.

I'm actually a big fan of shoujo. I usually find myself enjoying it much more than shounen series or anything more action oriented. I guess in general I prefer romance and drama to violence and action.

I hadn't really ventured into shoujo manga much until a few months ago. I guess I just hadn't come across a series that really appealed to me, but I was recommended Nana by a friend so I checked it out and ended up adoring it. So much so that I went and bought all twenty one volumes in public with a face full of pride and satisfaction.

I think it's important not to limit yourself to a specific genre or demographic. It's like Books said, that's just silly otherwise. I plan to read a lot more shoujo manga in the very near future.

yes, I read a lot, but mostly I didn't add them into my readlist because most of them is just 1 volume book and I don't know the japanese name of it

I must admit most of them was pretty bad with generic flaw and story, but there's still some manga which have interesting story

and I never ashamed of it, I mostly borrow shoujo manga from my girl classmate and my little sister

now I'm planning to read some Josei manga

MAL does recognize the English names of manga. You can search for them that way.

Depends. I can't stand the eyes. They are so shiny it makes me sick. Even if the story may be good, i just can't bring myself to read those mangas that i regard as "too" shiny. The art in general is annoying. but there are some that i can find interesting.

I'll read the occasional shoujo title. I really enjoyed Love*Com (Lovely Complex). It was humorous enough to keep me interested from start to finish. I just started reading Nana; finished the first volume and am into the second one, and so far it's pretty decent.

I know how you feel. I find the girls big eyes to be annoying at times too and how almost all the male main characters in a shoujo manga look the same as the male main character from another shoujo manga.

I've read many shoujo manga, or at least a lot of what's available in print. I don't find them to be that bad, but some are just really insane. I tend to avoid the ones with yaoi in it. Most of the shoujo I read are by recommendations too.

I've read very few shoujo manga titles in the past (Time Stranger Kyoko, Kaitou Jeanne, Nana), and out of those three NANA was the only one I could say I liked. The shoujo artstyle and sprawling panel "arrangements" don't quite suit me either. Though I did buy the entire Full Moon - series and the first six volumes of Ouran High School Host Club just recently (haven't read them yet), so we'll see how I like them. :)
