At first I though I would say yes, but after I gave it some though, I would really hate to live forever, eventually I would want to die. And yeah, you mean Tuck Everlasting, lol =) Though the book was far better then the movie IMO.

i voted no.
because immortality is the ability of not just NOT being able to die, but also being able to impart life to those of the living that are subordinate to you. It is the ability to create life from within yourself. You would be a 'life-giver'. So you would become responsible to others. I dont' mind living forever, but there's a difference between living forever and being immortal. Plus, don't you have to get that from God?

Intresting topic. ^_^

Living forever or death forever?

Being scared shitless of death, it's hard to decide.

I would happily be immortal, but as long as the following conditions happen:

1. I get to control how I look etc etc
2. My bodily functions do not age
3. Everyone that I know and see and meet gets to become immortal as well.
4. Earth never dies.
5. Eternal Youth

That's it for now, if I come up with anymore conditions, I'll edit them in ^_^.

No, I would not want to be immortal. 'Cause at some point, I do not think it would be fun anymore, you'd ask for the "sense" in your "life" (can you actually call it "life"? it obviously does not end with death...). Also, I guess you'd have to see violence, brutality and cruelty (which I personally would not like to discover) when you stay in the world for so long, wars come and go, but if you live forever, you'll eventually get caught in at least one - which is one too much. And, of course, seeing other people die forever, that's no fun. Additionally I guess you'd become "old" at some point, more precisely: seeing and hearing less, losing sense of taste, and I guess the world would become too "fast" for you, your head would explode of all the information ;)
But this is a really interesting topic and I think it's also very interesting that it's pretty equal (atm).

We are born to life, then death. Its the way of life and it wouldl somewhat upset a balance in some certain way I believe. Even so, Time may evertually get to you. The human mind can be effected in many ways. You could then search for the peace (suchs as death) but will not have the option for it, being immortal.

Dont know if I explained myself well, but it could have longterm drawbacks. I person want to live, then die when my time is up.

However, as time is eternal, you will get better and embrace life again. You'll find a new reason to be (and rotate forever, constant flux).

If time isn't eternal, your pains will end with the end of time.

I wonder one thing though. Does immortality imply that even if your body is totally destroyed, you will still be "alive" as a consciousness (ghost)?

Yes, undeniably. I'm way too obsessed with the apocalypse to not want to be around when it happens. And I'm too curious; I want to see the future and technology.

Take it from me...Being immortal is not all it's cracked up to be. Yes it has it's benifits, but at the same time it has it's bad parts. Sure, you live for ever...that just leaves you with the fact that if someone was to capture you, they could toruture you with out you ever dying. Also, eventually society will end and cities will fall. War will happen, and the planet will start to die after thousands of years, and you, and what ever other immortal (or creature that can live in that type of barren) is out there. Unless we have the technolgy to get off and get to another planet with stable life. Of course, if I ever had to go to war, I know I would survive. I am happy being an immortal though :P

personally i like to be immortal if i would have other great powers too(don't get me wrong i would want to find a way and get the power and immortality raher than getting it as a gift or something... easy come, east go...)
but i think god would know better to let people be immortal anyway and for the sake of justice you shouldn't be the only immortal and if other peoples are immortal too then i would realy grieve for earth and nature... humans are too much already.

but i would realy like some extra... say 2000 years to live my life to the fullest and do all i like in this world because as great as heaven or as bad as hell be they are not this like here.

Fortune is an illusion - oasis of the waterless desert -
Power is an illusion - wondrouse potion of the honorless merchant -

but....

War is pure reality - fight with the selfless self ,wordless world and lessful mind.

The idea of forming bonds, having them die, forming new bonds, having them die, over and over is not a good idea to me. I do wish humans lived longer, but I plan to spend my time here on this earth wisely.

If you didn't fear death you would be dead right about now. Death is the most ultimate form of fear which you cannot escape from. One you have a near death experience you would understand my friend.

QFT.

And yeah, I'd like to be immortal. I want to see how this world develops, if we suceed in space colonalization, if there's ever going to be something like mechas, if the people will live in peace or end the world in a holocaust. I want to see the world and the galaxy end. I wouldn't mind the loneliness too much, I could always make friends and meet new people though it would be very hard to see them dying after some time but I'd probably get used to it after a while. I don't really know about that part since I never experienced death in that way but I say yes to immortality.

only if I can choose to end my own life at any given time. I have seen too many stories of fiction that depict immortals and they're usually depressed and bored as fuck.

When I think of immortality, I think of it Lost Odyssey-style. Staying the same age - not being able to die from aging or physical wounds.

As others have mentioned, there are pros and cons to being immortal, I think. With the mindset I have right now, being immortal might be a major strain on me. I think that eventually your way of thinking might change, your perception of life would alter, and you'd get used to being immortal. I wonder if I would eventually get tired of living?

Maybe I'm not thinking too far ahead, but I'd take immortality if it were offered to me right now.

What would have been really cool is that after you become immortal, you can make other people immortal too.

A bit like vampires, without the blood sucking thing.

(Cuz if everybody die in an apocalypse, where the hell would you get blood?)

There is no such thing. Everything dies or erodes, sooner or later. There is no escape from entropy, eventually our universe will exhaust itself. Immortality is in the eyes of the beholder.

drac - those stories are, as you mentioned, fiction - i doubt that any human on this planet can tell anything at all about being immortal. due to that you can put such SF\anime\drama\whatever's parts to the closet and forget about them. they're not reliable at all.

life without time given is absurd. we're who we are because we are living within this 4rd dimension. if we were immortal than such acts as reproduction and beliefs like ethic code would mean no sense.
the most basic human's attributes - love, pothos (its sth like nostalgia, desire to discover, to understand, to see - but no primary thing\target (hell dunno if you understand, ancient greeks used it for the firs time while describing Alexander the Great. Cioran wrote (sry for lame translation): the world is a universal No-Place, thus you have no place to go\stay) are based on a fact that we're going to die. we love the ones we love even more when we know that one day they're going to die. we desire to understand, to know the Truth (lol) even more when we know that one day we're going to die

or so do i think ;)
