But I believe it's pretty clear this thread's topic is about obtaining anime through illegal means specifically, so this conversation is essentially pointless.

Well, I respect your opinion. I just have completely opposite sentiments.

Looks like I enjoy sabotaging threads like these. :P

Perhaps on another planet

logic dictates that the proper order is

Downloading > HD Streaming > Paying

I guess people support paying for moralistic reasons? Just another non-issue to be indignant about

Streaming is technically downloading anyway and it strains on your connection so downloading seems to be the best deal; maximum-quality video and audio with no cost to your connection

A) I have no reason to wait, assuming I have the money, I could just buy the BD once it gets released. Seriously, why should we wait? whats the purpose behind it? Its not our fault we can't watch Japanese TV in the west.
Waiting isn't, and never will be, fun. Anybody who thinks otherwise is deluding himself.
"waiting is half fun", seriously? Waiting is half the fun?
B) I might as well directly important from Japan then, no reason to give money to a company that made a shitty dub(strike witches, K-on!, Genshiken). I'm more than willing to support the anime industry, but I have no reason to support the companies than dubbed the before mentioned anime.
C) The American/western release can take years upon years before it even comes out, not to mention a lot of series will never get licensed(kodomo no jikan for example)
D) I don't have a lot of money, I can't buy 25+ series a month.
E) I only buy series I like, why should I buy a series I didn't enjoy watching?
Is it "morally" rigth to pirate? No. But if piracy was not possible, I would still not buy it.

lol, agree.

I buy every show I watch. If I do not like the show, I resell it and buy another. If you dont like dubs, then fine buy it imported from Japan, you are still supporting the people that work to produce the shows for a living. If you do not have the money to buy the DVDs then at least buy the Instant Videos from Amazon. You are still supporting the people who work to produce these shows. If every person who watches anime started pirating, the industry would crash. Also, there are Channels on TV that show anime.

I dont do either. Here is the reason. If people keep streaming and downloading anime, the industry will be destroyed. I watch my anime dubbed, and the only way that anime is gonna keep getting dubbed is if companies like Funimation, Aniplex, and Sentai Filmworks see profit. Stop being cheap and support what you like.

Also for those who say, us in America do not effect the Japanese anime market, that is a complete lie. After the 1990s when anime started coming over to America, the anime market in Japan increased in profit over 20x.
I also live in my own tiny world.

Your comment has no input at all. The voice actors, editors, artists, producers, etc that create the shows we love rely on their jobs to make ends meat. If the companies they work for do not turn a profit, then they lose their jobs. Im a college student working on my Bachelors in Game Design. Since I'm going to be working in an industry that gets pirated, it hits close to home.

Except the effect of piracy is positive and gives them more profit, even the industry knows this. My 300 000 list views help industry more than your dubbed dvd releases, just saying. Do you seriously believe that all those dubbed series of yours would be dubbed if there was no western fandom behind the series, a western fandom who had pirated it? What would you be buying then and how would you be there to save industry from destruction again? Piracy doesn't destroy anything else than that barrier which holds hypocrisy from overflowing, and maybe the psyche of some wannabe millionaires who want to blame it when they fail to become famous.

Your rant isnt correct. Check out this site:

http://www.metafilter.com/112355/What-Has-Piracy-Done-For-Anime

Piracy does not effect Japan too much, however over here in America, sales have been on decline since 2003. Also, its causing companies like Bandai to shut its doors to the North American market. The only shows that I ever watch pirated are the shows that will not have a release on DVD for America. Its funny that I have seen thousands of episodes of anime and never once had to pirate any of it. I guess some people are just cheap, greedy, and impatient, while others are willing to put their money where their mouth is.
There is no "here in America" for me. Nothing I said is incorrect from my part. You are doing only assumption which don't even hold water. Ever heard of generalization?

If you have decent internet and have a big enough hard drive, downloading is the way to go. With downloading you can simply watch all of your anime anytime you want, as with streaming you have to be near an internet source to watch it.

Download. I prefer 720p+, which despite streaming sites saying it's 720p, it's not as clean as say a BDrip, simply because the quality has to be compressed a little to make it viable for them to stream to thousands of people at a time. I also like having more control over my player, like being able to skip scenes, skip to next video in the playlist, autoplay, etc. No worries about buffering, ad's, or subpar "HD."

Stream.

It's hard to download and wait for it to be finished. Streaming is better for those who doesn't have their own computers and often uses them. :) However, downloading is most preferrable for those who doesn't want to buff.
I just don't like to use the space here for videos. (my parents will not me allow to do that)

I'm curious to see what MAL users do for their daily/weekly/monthly anime doses.

optional discussion question,
do you use illegal or legal sources?

please don't post what site you use to stream or download.

Stream, unless I know I'm going to want to watch anime when I'm traveling. Then I download whatever I plan on watching.

Only needed to download a series once so far, and Zeta Gundam lasted me about a month when I was cleaning myself up in a log cabin in Michigan.

Plus, no one who uses their comp for games is willing to take up the endless amounts of gigs it will need if you're downloading every series you watch.

It's difficult to answer that. I don't download torrents, I do download the streams usually from MasterAni/AnimeDao/Gogoanime and watch them locally..so I technically Download..Streams lol but occasionally I do stream if I'm sure there won't be interference with other devices hogging the bandwidth (I'm from middle of nowhere so bandwidth is very valuable out here where there's no fiber)

Download. I like to keep it to re-watch at my convenience, or to watch on my laptop when I'm stuck in a hotel with shitty WiFi that can't even manage 480p.

Especially the BD rips: My copy will still be available for instant rewatching in glorious, uncensored, crisp, full HD in a few months when the streaming sites - with the censored TV version - either remove it or downgrade the quality further to save on server storage space.

Also, I can get better fansubs/edits when CR/Funi/Aniplex/etc. completely fuck-up the translation or outright release Commie-tier trollsubs.

...and proud of it.

- I despise illegit streaming sites, to the max. I'll bloody never ever ...

- I am poor, like I can/ could afford to buy like one series /year - so I d/l - and my internet is not "great", but it does not have to be for downloads - totally emule btw., mainly because I am too lazy to switch to torrents, and emule still mostly works fine),
--- but then again, most of those I'd be interested in aren't even available here - seriously, sometimes Germany feels like "3rd world" :|

So I rather spend the money I want to/ can spend on commercial products on available (mostly through obscure channels) music in vinyl. (typically ebay/ personal imports)

Like, if available, I might totally would be willing to waste some little money on MagiPokan merchandise - but it seems that was never available, not even in Japan ...

idiots!
Best possible merchandise EVER! ... and not produced/sold ... WTF?
Like, how could I not have bought the car (Uma version) and the Motorbike + separately available Liru figurine? :D

also: one of the best EDs .... :D

I pretty much always download for the higher quality and I also don't have to worry about buffering and other annoyances. I usually just delete the episodes for space after watching unless I really like it or want to make screen caps. Only time I stream is if it's a long anime and I don't care about the quality because it's an old show for example.

And obviously I mostly use torrents and other "illegal" sources. Not that I have many options considering the "legal" streaming sites are not available in my country so I would have to import expensive BDs from fucking Japan or something just to watch a single anime. No thanks, I'll just torrent the BD rips and get basically the same quality for free and quicker.

I'm not using any legal sites because I don't have the income to do whatever I want. So to watch anime, I have to download the episodes at usually 480p. Streaming sucks because my internet speed is slow enough that the video will buffer, so I downloaded a bunch of episodes beforehand so I can watch them at nighttime.

well, me neither the income - but eg. crunchyroll never asked asked a penny off of me. They do not even counter-act me employing an adblocker, still let me stream this or that anime for free :totally-thumbs-up: ... of course depends on your location. (me:Germany - not the most favourited choice, if you had one, maybe still better than some other locations)

Download takes time though, I'd assume you just let your computer idle? Also legal sources contribute to the anime industry, would you change if legal sources were cheaper?

Stream because once I pick an episode of an anime to watch and click play, I'm watching the anime within seconds. Unlike download, where you have to wait for several minutes for the episode to finish downloading before you can watch it. I also don't care about the quality too much.

Also, I have no hard drive space left, so I can't download any more anime and I don't want to delete anything, but with most streaming sites, I don't need hard drive space to watch an anime.
